Some places in the world just attract things through a sort of psychic energy that gets traps in the upper stratosphere, Tokyo for example attracts enormous animals that breathe nuclear fire.

:roflol: Good one Chris. And I suggest that everyone reads the book, listens to the Orson Wells broadcast, watch the original movie and listen to the Jeff Wayne Musical opera. After 3 now. DUN DUN DUHN! DUN DUN DUHN!!!

You've never heard of Bonnybridge? A small scottish town that has a reputation for being europe's ufo capital... how come? Why do the aliens want to come down to Bonnybridge of all places. o.O It's not exactly blink and miss, but it's pretty small to the surrounding (more interesting) towns.

Anyway, Tom Cruise... I didn't expect him to be doing War of the Worlds, although I think he's an inspirational actor. He overcame a lot when he was younger to get to where he is now. Now he's mega rich with a lovely gf. It's kinda nice.

Yeah, it's kinda nice that he feels he can tell other people how to deal with their depression when he's completely unqualified and is the member of what is a glorified cult.

*really hopes there are no Scientologists on PPT*

Actually, I wasn't talking about the depression stuff. I remember reading (having to translate) a French article for my French Standard Grade exam about his early life. OK, people deal with that kind of stuff all the time, but he not only overcame his difficulties, he raised himself up to an extremely high standard in a profession that earlier in his life, no-one would have expected him to have been able to have worked in.

I've worked with and helped dyslexic actors. It's not only reading the lines on the script, it's finding the actors (and directors) interpretation of the script, movement, motivation and intonation.

I didn't think that's what you meant, heh.

I meant the 'Now he's mega rich with a lovely gf. It's kinda nice.' which I don't find particularly nice at all.

Sorry about the misunderstanding, it's not important anyway ;)

I don't know. I've heard good things about this movie, but I think I'm still going to stay away from it. A lot of my friends are boycotting the movie due to what he said to Matt Lauer (spelling?) about Psychology and the use of Anti-depressants. I don't know what boycotting will really do, but eh, to each their own right?

Their boycotting will likely do very little to nothing, though it's always good to make a stand if you feel it's the right thing to do.

Actually, no there's not. Jeff Wayne wouldn't let them use the title "The War Of The Worlds" so they had to just use "War Of The Worlds". And yes, I have heard of Bonnybridge and I think it's a load of old codswallop. I mean, Godzilla's more believable than UFO's. I mean, she's on Corry right now.

Boycotting a movie b/c an actor has an opinion about something that differs from your own?
Uh huh...
So... lemme get this straight. B/c he doesn't believe anti-depressant drugs work.. all of a sudden he's SUCH a bad guy?
Yeah, maybe he should've said it in a better way, but good lord it's just HIS OPINION. I'm sure alot of people don't think ANY drugs work. We gonna start ragging on them too?
And don't forget the people who have a different religion.. can't forget to start picking on them b/c they're different!
Let's go find them, stand outside of their work place and boycott the business b/c one of their employees have a different opinion/religion than me! WOO!

And no.. I'm not a Scientologist.. I think that whole thing is a bit.. odder than norm, but whatever, I think most religions are odd in their own ways.

I really really don't think it's that simple Shollia...but I PMed you with a bit of an explination since this isn't really the place to get into a debate...

I don't think it's that so much as he was actively trying to make someone come off prescribed anti-depressants when it's a) none of his business and b) he has no medical background.

Better not get into a debate.

There were some parts that were a bit eh... and every single character made me just want to smack them silly while cursing up a storm to tell them to just shut the heck up, AND the ending was pretty crappy to me... but overall it was pretty excellent.
Also the whole thing with the disfunctional family thing was pretty bad and very overdone.

I know what you mean that every character made you want to smack them. I was so angry at every character. Tom's character was the only sane one.

Frankly, depression or no, Tom Cruise has no right to tell ANYBODY what to think. The man can't even separate fantasy from reality. He goes about dating all of his co-stars!

I like how the martians die from the bacteria on earth.

Does anyone know when the book comes out?

Thu Jun 30, 2005 8:20 pm

Here are my gripes with this movie:

1. Why didn't the aliens research our current world better before invading?

2. How did the alien "things" remain buried and undiscovered all this time with our technology?

3. The alien tripods were... eh. While their design remain faithful to the original, placed in the current world setting they just seem like some bad 50s movie set piece.

Now if the movie was set, say, in the 1940s then maybe the tripods would seem more plausible as an effective alien invasion tool. But then you'd DEFINITELY have to re-cast Cruise. Tom + 1940s = does not work.

Like others have said before, read the book, and listen to the original radio play if you can find it.
