I have heard that they are just as bad, but I don't know from experiance. What I can say is that from seeing people with them, in my opinion they don't look very good. You can stil tell you have something onyour teeth, and they make your teeth look kind of dirtyish.

Considering all braces attempt to rearrange your teeth by slowly dragging them through your gums, I would say that any sort of braces would hurt.

They don't actually hurt THAT much since they do it gradually... it just hurts for a few days when they're tightened.

I have to wear elastics on my braces now, they're quite easy to bear with though, but I'm forgetful and I forget to put them on sometimes.

My friend has to wear 3 pairs of elastics though. Ouch.

I have braces for about six month now, I didn't used any thing and the pain was gone after about a week, but every time they tweak it it hurts again for like two days, the only tip I have is don't eat what they tell you not to.
I didn't eat those stuff since I got the braces but now I went on a trip, and we said that because of it I can skip the rules for like two week, and I ate some hard stuff and two of them got loosed up and now it hurts like hell when I eat..

I don't think I've ever experienced such pain. There's the dull, throbbing ache from the rubber bands jammed in between my back teeth, then the sharp sting of this piece of metal cutting into my upper lip, and then my bottom teeth decided to hurt for no reason, seeing as nothing's been done to them. (I have a huge overbite, and if they put the things on the lower teeth I'll just snap them off.) I can't eat anything because it really hurts to chew, so I've been living off of soup for two days.

Any helpful hints/suggestions to make the agony a bit less unrelenting?

The only thing you can do is tough it out. Pain medication never worked for me. Basically, you're going to be drinking a whole lot of Orange Julius smoothes and eating soggy Cocoa Crispies for a bit. Best of luck.
