Oh I saw that on a educational show thingamabob, very interesting. I recall them saying though that it's not going to wipe out everyone, just that people would have to be way more careful when they went outside because of the weakened field it would let more radiation and such into the atmosphere causing more cancer and such. Ofcourse a lot of people in planes may have their machines malfunction during the change they said and that it would defenitely affect other electronic equiptment.

Yes there have been natural disasters since the begining of time, however since I'm lazy, can anyone be bothered to look up how much time in between these disasters has gone by? It seems like these things are happening back to back recently, including 9/11 even if that isn't a natural disaster.

Oh and Bangel, state your view on how ridiculous you think something may be without the use of caps and without being insulting next time please. There is no need to add your comment in such manner, you can state that point without being condescending.

Well, recently we've had the Boscastle flooding that happened in August 2003, I think. We had the tsunami which happened Boxing Day 2004, we had the freak storms that battered England in Jan 2005 and those storms also affected California and a couple of other places at the same time, we've had hurricane Katrina in September 2005 and now hurricane Rita September 2005. There have been more disasters but I can't remember them off the top of my head. Anyone who can remember these ones feel free to post them. And I'm excluding disasters caused by mankind such as the terrorist attacks.

A good rule of thumb for fiction. Applying that logic to the real world, however, has led folks to predict the end of the world for . . . millennia. So far as I can recall, they haven't been right very often.

Quote:
Things all fit together

They seem to, because human beings are pattern-finders, system-builders. We group things in arrangements that make sense to us, no matter how random they truly are. It's the old Good (or bad) things come in threes business. No, they don't -- we just fit them together that way.

Quote:
everything happens for a reason

We have to be careful here not to mix meanings of "reason." Cause and effect -- effects happen as a result of a cause. A nut falls from a tree because of gravity (affected/influenced also by other factors, like the "ripeness" of the nut, a breeze blowing the branches, etc.). It happens for a reason in the sense of a cause, but not in the sense of a purpose. The nut doesn't fall in order to hit a chicken on the head, at least as long as we're observing real life and not writing a cautionary fable.

I have a word (actually, a name) for you: Yellowstone. It's a supervolcano, and it's got enough magma for one nasty eruption. It's also 40,000 years overdue. Also, supervolcanoes have been responsible for many of the past major extinctions, including the largest one (at the end of the Cambrian period), I think.

yup, Cambrion.
some 95-98% of all species died with that.

and magnetic field reversal, only half the planet (give or take) and it will last for a matter of seconds.
not that it helps whoever is on the sun-side mind you.

and total and utter destruction o the universe is possible (and theorised)
Its called total reality failure, and is the main argument people use against the use of Particle accelerators (that are used to create antimatter)
theasibly one mistake and BOOOM the universe as we know it ceases to exist, a shockwave spreads in all directions converting the entire universe to anti matter (protons, electrons etc)

That's the trick to the question =P.

Quote:
a+b=b <----Doesn't it equal 2b?

2=1 => 1 = 2

b = a, so substitute in a for both. You get 2a = a. Divide both sides by a and you get 2 = 1! =O.

Well anyways, a - b = 0, so you are in fact dividing by zero when you're dividing by a - b, so that's why the equation doesn't work out in the end XD.

As soon as a major distaster is about to strike my area I'll put a gun to my head.

Don't feel like dealing with all the mess.

But yeah, I've been thinking about that as well. But hey, I'm sure that no matter how many disasters like the tsunami strike earth.. we'll survive.

I do believe I spelt catacolismic wrong--quite sure of it--but I'm too lazy to look it up..

cataclysmatic.

Were you aware that your signature has a cow-like creature with a chain saw?

Catacalysmic, thank you.

And yes. It's a cow. Wearing a gas mask. With a chainsaw. Looking rather evil.

cataclysmic right ?

I always thought it was like a crazy piggy :P

And I don't get the whole "and I feel fine" comment, is that lyrics to some song? o_O

The end could be near, no one knows. Like others have said people have been predicting it for a while, I think all we can really do is be prepared at all times. I don't mean stock up on food ect, since if the world will end that won't matter, but enjoy life with those closest to you. Each day you walk out of your house could be your last, so the world may not for everyone but at some point it will end for each and everyone of us. Well, that's unless someone finds the secret to eternal life or something :P. Okay now that I'm depressed and now that I remember I won't live forever I will go watch some tv and waste whatever time I have left in this world in front of the evil box :(

Edit:
Oh I got me some of my favorite spaghetti!!! All is good once again. :D

It's from the REM song, "Its the End of the World As We Know it (And I Feel Fine)."

For our certain death and destruction, I blame the media.

What do you think brings CNN the most money? Natural disasters.

When 9/11 happened, when the hurricane happened, people were GLUED to their TVs.

The whole Rita thing was more or less a scandal. While it was a destructive hurricane, the local news in dallas was going CRAZY saying a level 1 hurricane was going to hit dallas texas, which is insanely inland.

We got heavy winds and it sprinkled for about 5 minutes.

Natural disasters happen every year, its a part of life, but they're being played off very seriously lately, which I think is a huge mistake that costs the wellbeing of many people.

The media isn't the one glued to the TV- it's the people watching. If people complain about how much bad news there is- don't pick up the newspaer, the Time magazine with the disaster, watch the TV show with the breaking news- they have to sell what the people want. And people watch negative things.

Of COURSE people were glued to their TVs. America was just attacked. Thousands of innocent people died. We were in a state of panic, we didn't know what was happening. If anything, the media helped in that situation- letting us know what was happening.

Maybe that's because they are serious? Katrina was BY FAR the most expensive natural disaster EVER. It destroyed New Orleans. That seems "serious". Maybe if MORE people would have listened to the news, more lives would have been saved.

I want to be a journalist, so I know a lot about it. I don't think the news should be blamed.

I wasn't blaming the news, I was blaming the people's interpretation of the news. Of course katrina was serious, if it wasn't big news, it wouldn't be on CNN for two weeks straight.

If you weigh out the news, how much is good news, and how much is about destruction, you'd come out at like 70/30, bad to good.

If you constantly remind people of the terrible things happening, they're going to think the worst.

Once again, not condeming the media, condemning the interpretation.

Yes... Very much so
