At an angle. It looks nicer.

In high school, I took a "business technology" class, and the teacher took of 5 points if you didn't get the staple at a 45 degree angle. That habit has stuck with me and I always staple it at an angle, unless I am in too big of a hurry and it gets messy.

At an angle, because when I fold the paper back, I fold it at an angle... so if it's straight, it annoys me. o-o

Wow, just, ya' know, let me not even start on the overall pointlessness that is this topic and staples all together (psyche staples are cool, but this topic is still pointless)
Anyway, this only reminds me of the pointless string of bathroom related topics we had a while back, and if you are so inclined I use those giant industrial stapelers that you can have spaeler shoot-outs with your friends with. (don't worry they bounce off people, well, unless your kinda close)

Unless I'm rushed, I usually use three staples and make a triangle in the corner.

I staple them, with 2 staples, at an angle perpendicular to the paper. so the paper can't twist off the staples.

I tend to like stapling in a straight line along with my paper edges. I don't know why, it just looks better to me.

I usually staple in a straight line. Of course, if I have to staple an additional page onto something that I've already stapled then I staple at an angel so that the middle of that staple is intersecting with the middle of the original (straight) staple.

Top left corner. Usually at an angle, but sometimes parallel... I really don't watch it (unless it's something important like a school project, in that case I put 3 staples parallel to the paper's edge)

There's a great story behind this.

At my old camp, we had a camper-run newspaper, the Oak Tree Times, where I was on staff for several years. Back in the pre-technology days, the campers used to have to manually staple 300+ five-or-so-page copies of the paper every day. This was obviously a tedious task, so someone decided to make it a little more interesting.

Thus begins the saga of Creative Stapling.

At first, it began innocently: a few copies stapled down the side, like books. But tension mounted as copies of the paper began to be sighted with staples in the center or at all four corners, making them difficult to read. Once, an OTT was discovered with staples completely lining the edges.

The editors tried to stop these highly dangerous activities, but to no avail. Campers began to use "Creative Stapling" techniques on more and more copies. At one point, the incidents were reported as frequently as one in five. And imagine the distress of the camper who recieved an OTT at the end of the day, only to find that it had been stapled shut!

Eventually, the editors made the revolutionary discovery that the photocopier could staple. This quickly put a stop to "Creative Stapling," but the memories will live forever in the hearts of former Oak Tree staff.
