I've never heard of a doubling event, but the "+1" event has happened to me a few times.

I don't know what you would do with that kind of money, besides save for really good BD weapons, etc. Don't forget, that is probably a tiny fraction of the money he makes. However, in a shop like that, you have to constantly re-invest your profits in order to keep it stocked.

By the way, I edited my equation from above. It turns out that upgrading your shop costs 4 times as much as I thought it did! Silly me. The cost of going from a size 1 to size 437 is 19073000 NP (!) That's a lot of NP. In case you're interested, it took gawdawful_books 1225350000 NP to get a size 3500 shop, not taking into account random events, etc. I'm still wondering if there's a random event that doubles the size of your shop.

To get a shop in the Haunted Marketplace (IMHO the best place because the Shop Wizard is hard to pick out), you need 2146000 NP, a much more reasonable goal.

Yeah I meant him - but he is very efficient at his job. I was once stocking when he was cleaning my shop. He cleaned it nearly as fast as I restocked from my SDB. Very impressive.

About reinvesting back in his shop, I think nowadays at the state he is in, he will very easily double his neopoints.

For example, take out 500 thousand NP. Go to Wiz, search for a particular scratchcard, say race to riches. Whatever list comes up, clear up all the shops on that list which have 50-100 scratchcards on them (there are always 3-4 such in most of the lists). This will take him 4-5 minutes atmost. So he spends 400 * 750 NP average each for Race to Riches = 300,000 NP. Within a week, he sells it for 400 * 2000 NP = 800,000 NP. Or rather 500K profit a week for 4-5 minutes work. Repeat it for the remaining 6 scratchcards, and some petpets, etc. I can see him making 5-10 million a week very easily, maybe by less than 4 hrs work.

I can see myself making around 600K-800K in around 20-25 hrs work a week, that too if my half-price restocking is upto the mark.

i hate malls!!! it is really hard to buy or restock anything for a profit. i saw a mall with a blue doughnut selling for 2145 neopoints!! it's ridiculous!

Ahh, but you're missing the point. They make enormous profits by getting other people to buy their cheap items at exorbitant prices. Most of those people could sell ice to an eskimo, and people bite.

Mall is the easiest and fastest way to gain a lot of neopoints..., the bigger the shop, the faster & richer the owner (assuming they stock their shops very frequently)

Sadly... it is legal ... (because I kinda hate how mall works...)

What exactly does it take to start making a sizable profit off of a shop or mall? How many items, how much time per day, etc.

They're making a profit off of others' ignorance--just like the lottery, herbal medicine, and other things. They're legal, but they don't affect most of us negatively.

 you ask the question which most probably experienced players are yet to find out. Only a few has deciphered it.

I only started saving significantly when my shop was size 40 or upwards, I think. But I still depend on games for my main income. I get very bored restocking.

That's going to depend on what you stock ... plushies and TCG cards won't make you as much as codestones and dubloons, but they're less work to restock.

Most shops over size 500 seem to be "general stores", anything you're likely to get a quest for plus random stuff.

Yeah. I wonder how long it takes for the average mall to run out of items and need to restock, though. I wouldn't expect a budding mall right at the bottom of the marketplace to sell a ton of stuff.
