Those people are ones who can identify with the sterio type of the group. That's why there are generalizations. It's like saying that people who like rap music wear baggy pants, do-rags, and carry guns. Some goths do/pretend to cut themselves because they believe it's part of the "goth culture" and some do like Satan for the same reason. You may not fit the serio type exactly and you may not be a typical goth but a lot of them do that stuff. Of course you can't say that everyone who is a goth does all those things but it is typical and common behavior of people who like to act gothy.
It's different than saying "southern people like nascar" because people don't choose to be born in the south and just because they are southen it doesn't mean that they will like it. Goths on the other hand do choose to be gothic, you can't be born that way (but some claim they are
). It's more like saying that "rednecks like nascar" because that is part of that social groups chosen cultural attributes, like hunting, driving pickup trucks and wearing baseball caps.

The thing is, I felt the stereotypes weren't accurate. He got emo completely right, IMO, and I AM emo(albeit unintentionally). Practically all the emo kids I know are like that. But NONE of the goth kids I know are like he said. I can see I'm fighting a losing battle to "protect" a stereotype, though, so I'll shut up now.
