I remember the originals, including the original Bruce. If anyone, ANYONE, can tell me why a red-headed beer-bellied guy became an actual pet, named, of all things, a Mellish (huh?), I'd be very grateful for the insight. It's been plaguing me whenever someone brings it up for the past six years. I didn't understand it then, and I don't understand it now.

Wow, some of those styles are just plain horrible. I'm glad that TNT has the current lineup of artists, or else we might be stuck with aberrations like the BADEEK. Also, the first Koi looks like some sort of swinger guy you'd find at a club going "Hey, baby, what's your sign?" to college girls. Now, here are some more comments, in "this equals that" style for more fun!
Fuzio = Sonic's cousin?
First Bruce = lol
Mellish = Young Pete from "The Adventures of Pete and Pete", but demented?
First Nimmo = looks a little too laid back...might be tripping on something
Frogstomp = bed sheet
First Scorchio = my drawings when I was six
First three Acaras = also demented
First Aisha = trying waaay too hard to be modern but looks like a doodle you could do in five seconds
Macy Gray turning into Kau = FOR THE WIN
And that's that, Jack.

Wasn't there another korbat in between the two they have listed at that site? I had a korbat many years ago and I'd swear it something in-between those two.
I think it was late '99, maybe early '00. I played Neopets for a total of - oh, maybe 5 days back then. And the main reason I lost interest was because the art was so, so bad. Wish I could remember that account name...

give them a break about the bad art 
.... at that point it was just a site started by bored students right? Now they can affored to hire professionals, of course the old art looks bad by comparsion. I've seen other newish sites with starting art just as bad.
Speaking of the Unicorn paint brush, I remember quite liking the unicorn Usul, though it wasn't around for very long....I can't wondering though, if they had kept the old bruce/macy/mellish, what they're attempt at painting it say, strawberry or darigan would look like....

The fuzzio looks like Rayman's cousin, no wonder they changed it to what we now know as a kyrii. Most of the old pets were changed due to outdates (some of the old pets looked like they were drawn by 5 year olds), copyright enfringments (The fuzzio' limbless look was Rayman's trademark), and grossness (The mutant chia and the mutant bruce looked all gross).

I think they said somewhere that he's based on someone they knew.

The bad art is charming in retrospect. I just didn't find it charming at the time. Which is too bad...I missed out on a lot of major Neo-developments just because I'm an art snob. 
I hope they never update some of the old stuff, like the Monocerous RE. It looks so quaint now.
Edit: The old Mutant Chia is nightmare-inducing! I wouldn't want to meet that thing in a dark alley.
