I don't get it..

It is a matter of psychology. Like the red button which says "do not press", do you press it as principle of curiosity or not press it, as a matter of authority? Like the question, do you choose option #1 because it says to, or do choose #2 because it says not to?

I would say I wouldn't choose either, but indifferent people in polls can be annoying. I'd pick #2.

But what was the maker of the poll hoping to achieve, and how did people beat the system?

What if I had a 3rd option that said don't choose either?

Then that option would make no sense, as you would be choosing something. And then someone would just say they chose none of the options, repeating the 'I choose none of them!' of now.

The premise of the question makes me not want to answer it.

It depends on how I'm feeling and if I have other options. For example, for daily activities at my camp there will sometimes be a "do not sign up for this activity". If there's nothing else I want to do, I might sign up for it to see what it is. But if there's something else I was to do I'll probably do that instead so I know I'll get something I want to do(plus I'm a bit paranoid now- some of them in the past have been watching the wiggles and not talking or doing wall sits for the entire hour).

So yeah, I don't go one way all the time. I'm not going to vote on this one because there's not enough context for me to make a decision.
