I think that each one of them is lying to hide something, not necessarily related to Hoban. In mystery novels the biggest mistake is to assume that only the criminal is lying. But, other than that, I have no theories. This is the first plot I've paid attention to from the beginning, and it all looks so complicated.
And then there's the possibility that the crew's stories will have very little to do with our "job" the way the astronomy club politics had little to do with saving Altador.

Aaah just spotted something. I looked through the comic archive through the link on aardax's petpage. In Bonju's story there is another time. He says " I saw him again, an hour later, 4 o clock or so by the port railing."
Don't know if it has anything to do with it but for reference, it might help...

i was just thinking, in bonju's version, Hoban is seen first at the starboard railing, and then an hour later at the port railing, both times seeming irritated. after knowing about those maps, i wondered...what if those two times were actually significant? maybe he was checking if the ship was going in the direction he wanted it, and got irritated because it was veering off his intended course?
what if he really hadn't caused the storm, and he got mad because it was throwing the ship off course in the general direction of Krawk Island, which according to Anshu Hoban absolutely refused to go to?
hmm what are they doing in this part of Neopia anyway? was it ever established what they are actually doing there? maybe they are searching for treasure and everyone is aware of that, and it's what they're keeping from us!
aaaaaaaaah too much thinking to do!

I guess so. There are a lot of contradictions between stories. I mean for example anshu says that at 5 bonju didnt know what was wrong with the navigator but in bonjus story he said he had spoken with hoban an hour after 4, as in 5...
Complete contradiction.
Very convenient how Anshu wanted to go to krawk island but hoban wouldnt let them and now theyve been to krawk island and hoban is gone. hmmm.

I agree with musikitamanga--
In Bonshu's story-- Bonshu had said that he finally talked to Hoban around 5:00 and that specifically he had calmed down from being irritated at 4:00 and 3:00 at the port and starboard rails respectively.
Then in Anshu's story--Anshu claims that HE saw Hoban at 5:00 arguing with someone (no names) on the aft deck and asked Bonshu what Hoban was upset about and Bonshu said he had no idea!
To go with those there's Linae's story--Linae says Anshu disappeared below deck at the beginning of the storm to get the medical supplies ready, she thought. She then says she went downstairs to fix a leak with Anshu at the end of the storm, even though Anshu has said he was sent to fix a leak a the beginning of the storm and was on deck closer to the end of the storm!
These things together with the other discrepancies between Anshu's story and the other's (including the bit about him wanting to go to KI first) point to Anshu to me.
Lastly, Yvonne's also right that all these discrepancies could, of course, turn out to be more misdirection than anything relevant. Just about how people remember the same event differently-- and it won't end up being important to our tasks. On the other hand, the fact that we cant revisit the former chapters (on neo anyway) would indicate that they're more relevant. Of course, with TNT that could just be a big ol' red herring.

Me too. I figured the ship would show up today, but I didn't think so much would be going on!

Looks like a 中不something. A little like 享. Makes no sense to be though.
Translates into 'Center does not enjoy' according to babelfish.
It might not be Chinese. Might be kana...and then again, it might not be anything at all. I doubt TNT expects us to be translating real foreign languages...at least, I hope not. If we were going to have to do any translation, it would probably be a language they made up specifically for the plot.

Seems like japanese IMO...
I can read "中不二XX" there for me, which means something like "Center not two XX", (which doesn't make sense). I think the last three characters look like japanese (since japanese has kanji), but i think it's actually gibberish...
EDIT: It seems to be japanese...thanks for the handwriting program from windows, i got this: "中不二コフ" not sure what it means...(babelfish got me "Medium unique コフ", again doesn't make sense)
