I found out on the most disreputable site on the internet. But hell, in five minutes the entire internet knew.

It feels really weird. I mean everyone knows who Steve Irwin is.

i heard on the radio earlier that they think the ray might not have killed him - as nobody has ever been killed by one before, but it was actually a heart attack. this hasnt been confirmed tho.

terrible news tho.

I thought the person who told me about it was trying to be funny or something when they said it. Just seemed, unlikely, I guess.

He'll be missed by many people. :(

I just woke up a few minutes ago and logged on to the computer and found this on my home page.

That's really sad, I really enjoyed his shows.

And according to the article on time.com, he died instantly. And the friend who was with him said it's like being stabbed with a dirty dagger. I could understand being killed instantly by a ray if it was a bull ray, but still...

Oh, wow. I woke up this morning and mom told me on her way out the door to work. My first thought was for his wife and kids, as well. God (or whatever higher power you believe in) be with them. You'll be missed, Mr. Irwin.

I read on one news site that the sting triggered a massive heart attack. Those things hurt, and if it hit right I could see that happening. I still feel awful about it this morning.

You guys are suprisingly sad :) Thats nice

Now I think its terrible when anyone dies, but for those of you making points of his lovely daughters who are now without a father - i'm sure he thinks of them too, when dangling them over a 15ft crocodile while holding a chunk of sheep meat in his other hand.

Crikey.

Yes, it's sad, but is anyone really that surprised about it? He's been doing stupid stuff for years, and he was bound to get seriously hurt or killed one day. I guess I'm the only person who ever heard that you should stay far, far away from a stingray?

However, he liked doing what he did, so everyone should be thankful that he died doing what he obviously loved so much, and that's really the best anyone can ask for.

Well, yeah, but still... That was what killed his career, as after that I didn't see anything about him anywhere, but...

I'm sorta stuck in the middle between feeling sad and also wanting to say "Well, it was gonna happen", but still.

Sure, I think everyone realised he was bound to get in trouble by doing what he did, but personally ...I thought it would be a crocodile that would bite something off one day. Not a ...stingray "sending a poisonous barb through his heart". That's just, not what I would have expected to happen to him ... o_O

This is so sad. :( He was a really great guy and so full of life. I'm kind of glad that out of all the ways he could have gone, he was blessed with a quick death. He probably didn't even have time to register it. It was clear that he loved his wife and children very much and I feel for them. I wonder if his wife will make documentaries by herself now or if she'll just quietly step away from all that.

Wow, I just read about it on the news. What an awful event. I always thought he was a really great guy, it's such a sad thing to see him go.

But I guess it's a good thing it was by nature, that's probably how he would have wanted it.

For those coming down on him, perhaps you should attempt to look at the bigger picture. The guy did a lot of good for the environment, for wildlife, and to be honest, for protecting Aus. He was one of a kind, and I really don't think a thread about his death is a place to criticize him. Stingrays world wide have only killed 17 people, this would be the third death in Aus. Statistically, you'd better stay away from dogs, horses, and cats more then you should from stingrays because you're more liable to be killed by your family pet then by a stingray.
He was a good guy, and he did a lot for conservation, and thats why i'm saddened by this. The world needs more people to be as passionate and caring about the environment like he was.
