Ok, so I am just a little bit late in posting this, haha, been busy with the plot and all, but, here are my answers to your questions!!
-Who here is currently on hiatus/leave/self-imposed exile from Neopets?
I'm not currently on "hiatus", but I have done so in the past. Sometimes for up to a year, then one night, while on the internet, I get board and bam, I'm playing Neopets again!!
-Why did you decide to leave?
Work, school, needing a life away from the computer, and just plain getting bored of it when you play it constantly for so long.
-Are you going to come back (after all, if you're reading this you still have some interest in the game)?
I always came back, I always think of it as a little vacation, that's it.
-How often have you left Neopets and gone back?
Possibly 8 times or something like that?
-Do you plan to 'grow out of' Neopets?
No, when I have my kid, I am going to get them into Neopets too. It teaches the kids, I think.

No, when I have my kid, I am going to get them into Neopets too. It teaches the kids, I think.

I am not currently on a hiatus, but have been MANY times. I do the exact same thing you do, in fact.

I get too invested in the game, to the point where I can't do it anymore and I stop alltogether.

Hahaha well I'm an 18 year old college freshman and I've been playing since I was 12... so probably not.

Thus, while I may lose interest in Neopets I'm certainly not going to outgrow it.
I've cut back on playing recently -- I mostly follow plots, do dailies, buy and sell stocks, and now do site visits. A few months back I really got into avatars, though. It comes and goes.
What I have gotten addicted to recently is Subeta. Just what I needed, to waste more time online.

Heh. Neopets hiatuses are horrible. I went on a Neopet hiatus like for 2 years, I think. I came back because I had nothing to do and I spent a LOT of time in this game to just throw it away and completely disregard it forever. So I come back to Neopets only to find all this new stuff like the PPL and everything. Yeah. Hiatus = Bad. But yeah, I'm not a hardcore player anymore...just dailies, labray is a must...uhh...and plots. I sure do love them trophies!
Plus, when you go to forums like the PPT Forums, you'll find it's pretty hard to lose the Neopets obsession. =P
Oh, and I'm a high school senior. =P LoL It was fun over the summer because I got a lot of my friends back into Neopets (they have quit since then, but the reminiscing factor was the point, really) so there's no shame from me! d-(^_^)z

I used to play on Neopets a lot and I mean A LOT!
But then i got bored and did not play it for about a month or so.
Then, I went back and now I play on it for about 15 mins a weekday and about an hour on the weekend. I spend more of my time on forums and on websites related to Neopets than Neopets it self. But some people are seriously addicted and should limit themselves.

I play rather on/off-ishly. I used to go on a serious goal-oriented or just-for-fun playing spree for around two months, maybe three, then get bored of the monotony and drop it. After I come back one or two months later, I find that half of everything is different. Longest time I was away was only 5 months and came back to find all them new pets - Yurble, Ixi, etc.
When they redo the site when I'm gone, it always throws me for a loop. I'm from the time where lab maps cost less than 100k for a full set, and prices inflate so dang fast now. :/
