I voted for Neither.

"Geek" isn't exactly a word I'd use.
"Nerd" isn't a word I'd describe a lot of people.

Er, if that makes sense...

I see myself as a geek in some areas, a bit nerdy in others.

A geek may be socially inept or cool or both--it doesn't really matter. What matters in my definition of geek is that a geek must have some highly specialized skill or knowledge that doesn't fit into an area that's traditionally seen as cool. There are history geeks, sci fi geeks, drama geeks, computer geeks, and geeks who are all of the above.

A nerd is almost always socially inept, by my definition. Nerds have some geeky obsessions, but don't really have the skills or talent to rise to the level of geek...yet. Also, the strawberry flavored ones are really tasty. Not so much about the grape ones.

Dork?

That's the word!

Actually, I think exactly the opposite--a geek is a runny-nosed pocket-protected kid who talks about hacking into the school's computer system.

From the POV of computer nerd/geek, I call those people "script kiddies". Calling those "script kiddies" "geeks/nerds" is an insult to "us computer geeks/nerds". But i'm being picky and annoying now... :P

EDITs: Missing words and incorrect tenses, oh my! Must be the candy.

Ah, well at my school you are neither a "geek" or a "nerd" - you're a SWOT :D

To me, geek is a guy who walks around with tight trousers and talks with a blocked nose, repeatedly saying "GUHUH I LOVE SCIIENCE". He also has selotaped glasses and a pet frog...as demonstrated in one memorable drama lesson where my friend Joe created a geek character named "Eugine".

A nerd is somebody who is very clever but is rather socially inept..

When I use the words, 'nerd' is someone with really broad intelligence/interests in math, computers, science etc. 'Geek' is someone with broad intelligence/interests in writing, language, philosophy etc.

Using Star Trek as a well known example, if someone were more into the storylines and arcs, dialogue, relationships, history, and character development in all the series, I'd figure them a geek. A geek might decide to learn to speak fluent Klingon. A nerd would be a fan who has severe interest in the science behind the show. Someone who could explain how a starship runs better than Scotty, finds something fun about string theory, and could explain and understand all the scientific errors written in the scripts.

Either phrase could be derogatory from the wrong person, but if I call someone either of those things, its a compliment. For myself, I'd prefer geek though. I havent got a brain for numbers at all.

Wow, that's pretty concise. That's not how I define a nerd and a geek.

I think that a geek is more someone that's absolutely fascintated with computers and science. IMO A nerd is more a geek that has no social skills.

I think I' m classed as a geek.

But it's rather cute!
I've only ever heard script kiddie used to describe those who use other people's programs or whatever to inconvenience people, but I know next to nothing about that sort of stuff. All I know is, there were these kids I used to sit with at lunch who would talk about how they got into the system at school.

Each group of people or person has their own definition, here is the most common one.

Geek - Someone who sucks up to the teachers, does 4 copies of the extra credit when you only get credit for one, gets more than the possible on a test, gives 3 page answers on the Short Answer questions, asks for even more homework, stays after to make up every last point if they miss a single one.

Nerd - Someone with a 4.0 , someone who does Spelling Bees, Chess Club, Math Club, Smart Club, Club Club, etc. Someone with academic awards.

Computer Geek - Someone who uses the computer for any other reason that AIM, or someone with a website when most kids are too stupid to even know how to type well or open Microsoft Word.

Personally, I am a Nerd.

Nerd. Because, I have three words for you. White. and. Nerdy. (Best song by Weird Al ever) Although, Sioux is right. Each word does have it's own definition.
