Hypothetical family: Thats because she has genetic issues/ eating disorder / Vile alien parasite that feeds off of fat /Whatever.

Media: I know, we can make money from this poor excuse of a sob story, lets sensationalise the story and with-hold half the truth while playing to the parts that get us money like we always do and have done for millenia!

People that don't believe they do this: OMG SHE'S FAT AND I BLAME THE PARENTS!

What half of the truth are they withholding? Either way, I think the most important truth is that this poor kid is seriously overweight and something needs to be done about it, whether its the fault of a disease or the parents or a combination of that or something else. Whether the media is showing this for money or not doesn't really matter.

It makes me sad to watch that clip.

The assumption you're making is that there is a greater reason as to why she is obese. It may simply be that she has eaten herself into obesity and thusly has been fed to be that weight.

If the child's weight stems from an actual physical condition(which seems likely, considering HOW overweight she was), it's still up to the parents to have her diagnosed and treated. If they don't, that's abuse by neglect because the child has not been cared for properly.
I just feel depressed because this sort of thing shows up on television as part of a thinly-veiled freak show.

The show needs stories to have viewership to make money. Any show on TV needs money to run. Shows are designed so people watch them and their advertisements in order to make money.

It's an unavoidable truth. For this reason, we all need to take everything that is said with a grain of salt.

But this isn't limited to just TV. Newspapers, friends, family, random people on the street, we can't take everything on face value.

However, the show also serves as a medium for exposing any pertinent issue. If we didn't have Channel 7 news, Channel 9 news etc. etc. etc., then we would lose a medium of communicating contemporary issues around the world.

I'm all for open communication - it's up to the people to discern what is true what is not.

This thread is not a crusade against the media, it is about child obesity which is a very real problem. If not this girl, then someone else.

You know why some people are obese? 'Cause they're greedy, eat too much and don't work it off.

OMGZ.

You're just digging yourself into a deep hole, Setekh. I don't like it when you do things like this. Sometimes, it's best not to argue at all, especially when it's clear you're in the wrong.

And I will continue to make that assumption until shown otherwise.
The logical explanation is that information is being with-held, simply because that is what the Media does.
Hell, it's what everyone does.

And sleigh eccentricities of my mentality aside, I'm arguing because you've hit a nerve.

It's not what everyone does and it is not necessarily what all the media does. However the argument is growing stale. I don't see how this far into the game that the parents are not to blame. As stated time and time again any way you look at it a kid that age (should) have no control over what they're eating considering their parents or guardians should be the ones supplying the food.
As well if medical treatment was not found for her or was found but not followed then it is yet again the parents or guardians who are at fault for not doing something about it.

If the parents thought they had been misrepresented in this, e.g. she had a medical condition but it hadn't been mentioned and this had been sensationalised, they could have easily put their message across.

Ignore me, personal issues got the better of my self control.
Gonna go take it out on small furry animals or something.

Ok it looks like everything has been hashed and rehashed to the point where theres not much else to say. Everyone agrees its a horrible situation for Jessica and that her parents should've done something. Great - lets all go find better topics to discuss now. :)
