Hey I've been wanting to do something for a long time. And maybe I'll just let someone else take the idea and run with it and it goes along the lines of the conversation here. As I stated previously I'm very big into Adopt and Release wich is what i call my lil project. It's just a friend and I who do it so far. No guild to join or anything like that basicly you just adopt a pet (with a decent name) zap it and keep track of your zappings.... then release it back into the pound. The only rule her and I play by and i would hope other would play by if you wish to use the idea. Is you can't expect anyone to pay you for it, there are no silly forms, and don't tell anyone when you are releasing the pet just do it. Then after you see the pet is adopted (wich can be found out by searching neo for the pet name) you neomail the new owner with a congrats and the info on there pets transformation.

I personaly have a pet page I use for this on the side account I do it on if you want to check it out: http://petpages.neopets.com/~_Kandaina_

Also if you want to do something like this just do it don't feel the need to 'combat' the Uni project it's just something nice to do ya know?

(sorry if anyone feels this is spamariffic)

Daze wrote:I, for one find TNT's position on this appalling. Ok, so it is only a game and what GUP is doing isn't a scam, but it is not playing the site in the spirit of the game.

TNT many times have said it would be nice to play in the spirit of the game, to play fair.

I can't see how turning zapped pets into green unis deliberately to stop others getting a nice painted pet, is playing within the spirit of the game.

TNT's insistence that it isn't any worse using pounded painted pets as a status symbol and then dumping them when another comes along is absurd - we are not talking about live pets, if TNT doesn't like how the pound is used, then it should be taken away or upgraded to something better.

I am not 'all twisted up' about this and it doesn't affect me, but I feel strongly about a group of people that have taken it on themselves to change the way Neopets is naturally run.

The very idea of GUP offends me - here is a group that for no other person is to spoil the game for others. It is mean spirited.

Also, this action is a group effort - TNT frowns on groups buying shop items (as in false inflation) but has nothing but laughter for this! So the situations are a little different, but this group is still en masse changing how the game is played.

It's only against the rules if they buy them up as a group, only to sell them at higher prices. As long as they're using all of the ones they buy, then I don't think it's against the rules.

I know that what they are doing is not against the rules, but that wasn't the point I was making.

Maybe I shouldn't have used that example - but what I am saying is, TNT is allowing a group of people to change how the game runs naturally.

Naturally, as in, someone pounds a painted pet - someone adopts it. This group is going after all painted pets. That in itself seems an advantage over individuals wanting a painted pet. But then they turn it into a cheap uni - not a scam, but hardly playing in the spirit of the game.

I agree with you Daze. People who collect rare pets and then dump them when something more "rare" comes along aren't hurting anyone else. The GUP people who deliberately ruin those pets ARE. So who is more at fault here? If these were living, breathing animals, then yes, I would feel a little differently. But they're not. The GUP group needs to take a collective chill pill and just play the game as it was meant to be played.

There's something I'm not quite understanding. Do members of this GUP actively snipe pets during a transfer, or do they surf the pound looking for any painted pet they come across? If it's the former, that's incredibly mean-spirited and I disapprove of the action; if it's the latter, then it's just kinda pointless, but not something I'd really get in a snit about. If someone wants to waste their NP morphing pets, that's their choice.

However, I do think their original point about working for pets rather than just having lady luck hand them to you, so to speak, is getting lost amid all the controversy over the method. That, and I don't think it was all that great a way to get their point across in the first place.

Think about it. How many of your average Neopets players, after having their potential pet morphed into something plain and then learning about the GUP and its...mission? ... would say to themselves, "You know what? These guys are right. We should all work to paint our pets! I'm actually glad my Robot Pteri got Green Uni'd, because it taught me an invaluable lesson. How dare I be so lucky to just find (or adopt) one! I should've saved up for the lab ray and zapped one just like everyone else! Even if I do have to neglect my job and social life and become a slave to this computer and this game for the an entire year in order to do so! Thank you, GUP, for setting me straight."

....come on now. Has anyone actually had that reaction yet? Anyone? Bueller?

Now don't get me wrong. There's pride to be taken in a pet you've perfectly named and painted to match. I've painted 11 or so pets (some with matching painted petpets) over the past 3.5 years, worked my butt off for the PBs (and in some cases MPs), and there's nothing quite like the feeling of marveling the lookup of a 'finished' pet. I'm not saying hard work is bad or that their point isn't a valid one. I'm just saying, surely there's a better way to make that point without ruining the game for others.

Oh Lord, what have I started? If I did, indeed, start this? :P

Lol it was more of a joke but I just don't like the idea of people sniping painted pets for malichious means

Mon Mar 19, 2007 2:02 am

I don't think it has been said/proven anywhere that people necessarily "snipe" to find painted pets to morph in to Green Unis. I'm guessing most (if not all) people involved in that project simply troll the pound like those of us do when finding a new pet to adopt. Let's not make assumptions (although I'm not saying that there could be a few people that do this, it is not the majority I'm sure).

Mon Mar 19, 2007 2:11 am

Does this mean the MP prices might go up?

Well, I think its good and bad. I mean, yeah people should work for their pets, but even IM guilty of snatching up a nice named painted pet now and then, and I have two lab rays

Edit: as for the Green Uni Zapping Project I want to know when it happens, I'll help

Mon Mar 19, 2007 2:54 am

I guess GUP doesn't cause more chances of losing a pet than usual. There's always a chance somebody will take a pet you had intended for yourself or for a friend. Whether they morph it afterwards or not doesn't make much difference. Overall, if they're just adopting pets and morphing, then that doesn't affect anybody. If they're intentionally sniping transfers, then that's mean. Legal, but mean.

Officer 1BDI wrote:So, although I support their right to do it (after all, they're not breaking any rules), I certainly don't agree with it.

That's kind of my take also. Anybody has the right to do what they want with an adopted pet. That's the nature of the pound. However, I feel bad for anybody who was trying to transfer a 6 year old beloved pet to a side account. That's why I'd never transfer a pet. (Even if I did, I'd morph it to a red wocky first, and then morph back.)

Yup, that's my biggest problem with this whole thing. *sigh* Maybe I should spend more time on the neobards.

Mon Mar 19, 2007 2:58 am

Ok...1) Maybe Lutari wasn't a good example, especially since I forgot they can't be pounded >.< I also want a Koi...which are only available on Koi day, or through the pound...so yeah.
2) If this project thing gets off the ground, I think it'd be fun, plus I'd feel rather good putting out interesting neopets for others to happily own. What map do you have to collect to get the lab ray?

Mon Mar 19, 2007 3:05 am

Come on. Some of these replies are absolutely over the top. There are people who sit at the pound, day after day, adopting pets, then disowning the not so good ones they sniped when they find better. Until they find a pet that's super rare, only to go and brag on the boards. They do this continually even though it's just mindless spam blocking Help topics and such. I've checked some of these pets (usually ones people have missed when I was trying to transfer to them, as I never miss!) and they almost always end up somewhere else or in an obviously abandoned account. Of course, rarely, a user will pick up a pet and actually make it a pet page and give it a fursonality. But that is clearly a rare thing. People willing to do that would generally not surf the pound but come here to the adoption board or to an adoption site to look for a pet rather than snatch the first painted monstrosity that comes along.

So what are these people doing that's any different from a pound surfer sitting there until a painted pet comes? The only difference is that they're changing its colour and species rather than going to spam the boards bragging about it.

They have exactly the same chance to snag a pet out of the pound as the many thousands of pound surfers. There is no more chance of you losing your transfer pet as there was before. Maybe it will teach you to be careful and prepared before transferring. Or even reduce the need to transfer. If you plan to make little so-and-so into a Draik or a Royal Cybunny, do it on the account he's to go on. If you want to get a lab colour, get the lab on your main. Or just use two browsers and set it all up so you can't go wrong!

The Green Uni Project is an amusing break from the usual scammers, spammers and pound surfers topics imo. Remember, before GUP boards it wasn't any better. I could still only count the barest topics in the Help Chat that actually wanted help when I browsed there before this phenomenon.

EDIT: Just to clear things up, the original GUP people are only adopting pets they see in the pound. Not sniping transfers. But silly people who are tagging allong could be (since as you know, every one is trying to get on the bandwagon). But this is no different from before, as people allways tried to snipe pets from pounding boards. Although I think that's going a bit too far.

I'm quite sure that adopting a painted pet and then disowing it for a better painted pet isn't how the game was meant to be played either. And they are not ruining anything. It's a game. People complained because I painted my pet from one expensive colour to another because I was supposedly "wasting" the colour. They reckoned I should have pounded it for someone who really liked that colour then painted a diferent pet. I think this is nonsence. If people actually played this game everyone could have Royal, Darigan and Baby pets flying about everywhere. I'm scraping allong with a 56k connection and I do Ok. I don't believe in ruining a pet unless you scamble it's code rendering it unusable in the game.

It seems to me that GUP needs to be taken down a peg or two. Essentially (in my opinion) this is petty sabotage. These people think that because paint brushes, morphing potions and the lab ray all cost an obscene amount of np, people shouldn't be allowed to just adopt a painted pet. These people think they're playing benevolent deity, when really they're pranksters. They have no right to direct the game to suit their whims when it negatively affects a portion of the community.

I was considering transferring a pet, but now I don't know if I dare try. I can picture some five year old crying because the royal draik that their brother was transferring to them got turned into a green uni. Not everyone has the skills necessary to earn the amount of money it takes to paint a pet. Who are they to tell these people that they aren't allowed to adopt one. Adopting a painted pet, in my way of thinking, isn't much different than getting a fountain faerie quest that only costs a handful of neopoints.

</rant> Please forgive me if I upset anyone, this just really ticks me off.:x

ninjausagi does have a point. Thats like how people will buy a poopload of the same item, then price them all and change all the prices. I know its not exactly the same, but isnt that against the rules?

And I mean, Im sure theres a bunch of people out there who lab pets for people less fortunate. I know I do it occasionally. If I didnt want a newbie to get it, I wouldnt bother zapping it to pound it.

It's not the same because it's several diferent people doing it. Not just the one. Plus, they aren't hoarding the items, they are using them. Which is perfectly within the rules. The prices are only going up due to the demand. Which is probably more of a fluke because of all the boards. The GUP should have been an underground thing, it would have been funnier then. =D
