It's a horrible shame, this whole story. I feel I have to stick up for the parents here.
They were on holiday, the family, and as parents do, they need a bit of time away from their children in order to have a relationship of their own. I think its fair that they didn't want a complete stranger looking after their children, so they didn't take that option. Instead, they stayed close to home so that they could keep an eye on the children. Did the parents run off to some nightclub a few minutes away? Did they come home drunk every time they left their children alone? No. Not at all. They simply went to a restaurant seconds away from where they were staying, and had a clear view of the hotel. They checked on their children every 30 minutes, and weren't out for very long at all, just to eat something and go.
No one expects their child, who they believe is in the safety of a home or a hotel room, to be abducted or taken away. That family were a target, and Madeleine was taken purely by someone who had planned it. And I can honestly see why, shes a beautiful little girl. But I don't believe the parents made a mistake in what they did. Parents leave their children at home alone every day, simply because they believe that their children are sensible and safe and wont open the doors to any strangers.
However, this case just shows that even home isn't safe for children anymore. Gods know why she was taken from her hotel room, and her other siblings were left alone. I just hope shes found safely.
The information you have obtained-- I assume it was taken from the media?
We have no idea what the parents were really doing... The media likes to distort things to try and make you feel sorry for them.
Actually, I spent all of yesterday reading about this (I heard about it in a Myspace bulletin, as it's not really on our news yet), and that's exactly what happened. The media may be distorted, but I have enough optimism in me to believe that even if some sources do that, not everyone is out to trick us (and I read several articles on it, and I sincerely hope that at least one of them were telling the truth, because all of them said pretty much the same thing). I actually read a lot of different theories about it, too. Neighbors/friends said it was extremely out of character for the parents to leave their children alone. However, the family was going out with a group of friends- they were not by themselves. A common theory is that the rest of their friends left their children at the hotel, which had a reputation for safety, and so the parents believed it would be safe for their children as well. And, as Ayse said, they did check on Madeleine and her two siblings every half hour/every hour (news reports I've read vary on just how often they checked, but it is known they checked). Assuming the parents are not involved, which there is really no evidence towards, it would have to be very likely that whoever took her must have been keeping tabs on the family for at least that entire day- they knew the parents would be out, they knew the parents' schedule for checking, and if they didn't know these things, there's a huge chance they would have been caught. The McCanns were, from as far as any actual evidence and real people who actually knew them and their daughter, excellent parents that made a mistake. It happens. And this time, it actually and on an extreme level did happen. They were irresponsible, but not to the extent that I believe they should be damned by the many people that are blaming them for everything. I mean, come on, the abductor should have some blame, too.
If you want to read more about this, you can just google her name and a whole bunch of articles come up.
