Yes! Please don't get Firefox. It is highly overrated and seems to attract users that only decide to get it when they can't figure out someting in IE.*

* Or alternative operating system users, that can't figure out Windows.

Please do not make generalizations like that. I use Firefox for the tabbed browsing and a few other features. I would like to use IE7 (as well, not instead of), but my computer isn't powerful enough to run it properly. I do use IE for many sites I visit, including my Neo side account, and I block ads there using the style sheet option. Maybe there are a few people who default to Firefox because they can't figure stuff out in IE, but I would bet the majority of Firefox users have a very good reason for liking the browser.

Sorry Cranberry. Overgeneralizations are just that, and often people don't have the foresight to note that it is an overgeneralization. I certainly didn't mean every single Firefox user. I hope most people would intelligently be able to assume that; not assume I was purposely offensive.

I said "seems to attract users.." and it has been my experience. Having said that, it might actually be nice to meet anyone that uses Firefox for reasons other than what I stated since there are more than two browsers in existance and there are plently of alternatives to IE than just Firefox.

I use Avant for tabbed browsing, since it uses the same engine that IE does and I am so accustomed to that and know very well how to use it (and dare I mention has all the features of Firefox with the exceptions of being able to write/execute scripts and have "extensions" -- which I actually consider to be security measures trumping FF by far hehe). I will never use IE7 or Vista (unless for some reason it becomes 'mandatory' to support old hardware, such when FDISK became obsolete when Windows 98 became "unsupported" years ago and I had to transition to XP). I also feel bad for people running slower computers, so much so that I have built a many for free or nearly free just as ... my human duty / service I suppose. It is interesting when I do hear why people use Firefox. Every single reason I've heard comes down to a basic misunderstanding of Windows and/or IE. Rather than misunderstanding, assumption. Assumption that one should not have to know anything about surfing the Internet wisely, and thus should never be exploited. I really think that most people that use Firefox use it because their IE has been exploited by the overwhelming amount of spyware on the Internet and IE's default settings are notoriously very weak. And the facts are that most people just don't know how to browse the Internet safely/securely. Plus, most don't know how to "tweak" their Windows to prevent exploits.

Firefox is not the only browser that uses tabs. That is an overgeneralization. :P I am sure many FF users have a "good reason" for liking it, but I haven't met one in a decade. I only ever hear why people "switch to" Firefox. Very few computer users are native FF users.

I don't wish to turn this into a browser-war; I just wanted to state why I "overgeneralized" so strongly. If you're fine in what you're using, fine. :)

Don't insult my intelligence by implying I didn't understand your comment. You phrased it badly.

(Also, I don't think you really meant foresight.)

I'm not even going to bother replying to the rest of your post, as I, too, am not interested in getting into a browser war. I don't care which browser anyone uses, or why. I am also familiar with browsers other than FF and IE; I simply mentioned those two because they are the most popular around here, and the two I use.

Wow, someone is feeling quite insulted today. How can I NOT insult you? You seem to be insulted by everything.* I DID mean the word foresight, since it takes foresight to predict that Cranberry is going to gripe. Why bother to comment at all .. with your "please don't" kind of tone?

*almost everything ... (overgeneralizing)

I try to apologize and you respond that I insult your intelligence? WTH?! If your intelligence can "feel" insulted then I don't know whose "fault" that is.

Geezus, Cranberry, I love and respect you, but why are you attacking me? I was in no way implying that you didn't understand my comment! I was in no way harassing you. So why do you feel the need to bite back?!

You don't have to reply to my posts at all. I don't know why you PERSONALLY had a problem when I respond to another user, since you just stated you don't care. What do you care if I make generalizations that have nothing to do with you? Anyone here that read my post, if you felt personally insulted, please PM me so that I can apologize to you!

I also only mentioned those two browsers since they are most commonly used. Maybe mind your own business? You don't have to defend everything/everyone on PPT.

EDIT: Besides, if you want to be helpful on forum, you could have simply posted something like "don't listen to Anjuna, just use Firefox..." and state reasons or otherwise helpful hints to acquiring the goal of eliminating ads in whichever browser one is using. And it would have been less insulting. I was simply providing information. No reason for the personal attacks. :(

I was (mildly) insulted by your overgeneralization about FF users. You responded to my objection with "I certainly didn't mean every single Firefox user. I hope most people would intelligently be able to assume that; not assume I was purposely offensive." I think almost anyone would be insulted by a response like that.

That makes no sense.

That said... wow. You seem way more upset by this whole exchange than I am. If you want to just drop it, fine. I didn't feel like arguing in the first place.

This ends here and now. This topic is supposed to be about the newest ad placement on Neopets. Yes, it did spin off a little onto other topics, but in no way should I see people bickering about browsers and firing comments back and forth which can be seen as insulting by either side. If you have any other problems, I suggest PMing eachother or a moderator. Now, back your previously scheduled topic :)

Thank goodness, I was hoping my waving white flag would be noticed.

Most people would be insulted by .. my apology about generalizing? Hmm, well I think you are in the minority for assuming that, else I am in a rare few that don't just read a post and take it so personally that I defend ....

I admit there are a few subjects I also am "quick to respond to" when I feel it personally touches my life. My mind may be a little slow but eventually I realize that another person's opinion is not what makes me do X, Y or Z. I know you have a strong personality and so do I, which might make us somewhat more "explosive" individuals on certain subjects.

Again I just wish to clarify that I was no way intending to insult anyone. I find it very hard to believe that most people would be offended by .. saying simply what I said. I have said many a "controversial" thing and have yet to been "beaten down" just because I question FF users motives.

And of course I don't have some "IE religion/cult". It is not as if I go around trying to convert users into something that I think is ideal for all.

I apologize again, to Cranberry, and to anyone else who felt even a smidgen of "insult" as I am sensitive and know what that feels like -- the subtle physical impact. Yet strong enough to remain relatively unaffected by other users "insistence-ies". And I apologize for feeling so insulted by your response. Not that you had any idea that 'you' hurt my feelings.

Thank you, Cranberry, to define the effect of my post as "mild" since otherwise, I would just be obsessed with guilt that I offended you. No sarcasm intended, even if it sounds that way. I am just that O.D.D.

If you didn't feel like arguing in the first place, no need for defensive posts? PPT is for practical solutions. Opinions are just that, and you can disregard them as you would any gramatically incorrect logical fallacy. :P

Anyway, I hope my helpful instructions didn't get lost in all this banter.

EDIT: Sorry mods, I knew that was going to get out of hand, but after Cran's responses, I didn't know how else to explain my original motives.

Sorry, but I never accept the "sorry, but" style of apologies. ;) Yes, you did say "Sorry Cran," but then you followed it up by saying most intelligent people would have realized you didn't mean it the way I thought you did. I am amazed that you can't see why that annoyed me.

Dude, it's the Internet. You could call me an ignorant cow and I'd still just be mildly annoyed. ;) Remember, in the grand scheme of things, what some random stranger on the Internet thinks of you is of very little importance. I wasn't nearly as upset by your posts as you seem to think I was; I also don't think the argument was bad enough to require mod intervention. That said, I'm definitely prepared to comply with their instructions and drop this. If you want to "clarify" anything else, just PM me.

ANYWAY, thanks for the css stylesheet instructions for IE. They worked a treat -- I was using different code before, and I had problems with a banner ad covering my topbar buttons.

I admit that I like to use Firefox because I am lazy. One click and I can adblock scripts/frames/images and don't have to worry about making a style sheet. I still have the new Netscape, but hate the look of it.

I'm just plain biased against IE. The functions have always seemed limited in comparison. "What do you mean I cannot save that?" "Why does that not connect right to my chosen program?" "Why won't Whack-a-Kass run at a decent speed?" "Why did you crash again?" ewww

I let Firefox create my stylesheet settings, then apply that css file to my other web browsers.

I haven't noticed any 'bad' ads on neo as of late. Also after being a long time IE user i switched to firefox. IE7 has so many issues its not even funny. I reformatted my computer even and it still has issues. I have a friend who got a BRAND NEW computer and his IE messes up. I usualy have nothing against IE. I never have but this version oh i cannot tell you how many issues I've had.

But if the ads on neo bother i do suggest firefox over IE. Because why I'm sure there is a way to block the ads (as mentioned) firefox is simply easier for the 'normal' user. my normal being someone who knows basicly what they are doin but not everything. And as for another plus (atleast for me) I like how firefox's addons are set up for download.. it's so nice :)

I love Firefox. And I was one of those moaning and groaning, way back when the ads were first put on Neopets, and refusing to move to Firefox. I didn't trust it with a ten foot pole. Don't know why. Just didn't. And finally someone on here (I think it was Shapu) basically told me to stop moaning about the ads and download Firefox to rid them from my life forever. Some of the best advice I've ever gotten. I hate IE. Ever since I installed the latest version, I can't even open a link in a hotmail email. The page turns white and keeps attempting to refresh. Until I get so frustrated that I go into my Windows Task Manager and delete IE. *shakes head* I can only open my hotmail account in Firefox. Like that makes sense, huh? Have to use Firefox to open a microsoft program. Go figure.

Another Firefox fan. Go, tabbed browsing! I also love the search toobox and all the nifty extensions you can install in it. I can seach Google, Amazon, Wikipedia, the IMDB, eBay, and the In-Depth Battlepedia right from my toolbar. How cool is that? (What can I say, I'm easily amused.)

For those who want to play with style sheets you can even get an extension that lets you modify your user style sheet right in your browser -- no more hunting for files.

Sure, it's possible I could get the same effect in IE with extra programs, poking, prodding, and playing with settings, but why? My Internet hobby is Neopets, not fiddling with my browser.

I don't despise IE -- I use it at work because that's what's there -- but I prefer Firefox.

I lurve Firefox because, for whatever reason, it loads pages faster than IE on my computer. It tells me if it stalls out, instead of telling me it's still loading ten minutes later. It has an "open all in tabs" option for my favorites, which is handy because I like to open an entire folder at once. There are a bunch of other little perks I like, such as middle-clicking to open a link without leaving the page I'm on, but mostly I love it because I can get rid of ads easily and without a second thought. I never even saw this "unblockable" ad box.

Guys, this isn't a thread about IE and Firefox, its a thread about advertisements on Neo. After what happened last time, why don't we get back on topic to avoid another debate starting?
