Actually, I let my lovebrids fly around and be free in my room for at least four hours every day.
I let mine fly around in my room to sometimes, I'll just let them out of there cage and leave the room come back and they'll be marching across my window seal or something like that.

I had a parakeet. We let her fly free most of the time, she was handtrained so she'd use our hands as a perch and would sit on our shoulders and stuff like that.
But I really, really don't think you should make any attempt to breed parakeets. My friend's parakeets bred and not only did some of the eggs not hatch, *squickiness ahead* the male ate some of the baby parakeets.

I went to PetsMart today, just to look at the parakeets (I enjoy watching them) and I saw the sweetest thing. There were two pure white parakeets (according to the employees, they were rare) and they were just... bonded. They always stayed by each other's side, cleaned each other's feathers and they even took food from each other's mouths! I definitely want to buy parakeets that bond as well as these do (or hopefully even get these parakeets).
I am definitely not attempting to breed parakeets. I was just wondering why the eggs didn't hatch. If the pair of parakeets I get happen to be male and female and DO have eggs, I think I'm just going to consult the vet about what to do.
I'm currently searching the internet for what to furnish the cage with (I found a really nice one at PetsMart for around 35 dollars). When I have a list, I'm going to consult you guys, as you seem to know your parakeets and I just want to check. I'm also searching for how to take care of parakeets, because it wouldn't be fair to buy them and not know what kind of care they need. So please continue to post your parakeet tips, and maybe some special items or toys to put in the cage.

dont let them talk you into byuing a big cage...you can keep over ten in an average cage and from what ive seen they live happily

With cages, just clean the bottom part every couple of days since these birds like to go to the loo a lot. You just stack the bottom with some old newspapers and most cages, they should slide out and be easy to change. Get them toys too, these birds like to play with toys. Don't put them near windows, especially during the winter. They can catch cold and die. It happened to somebody I know. You'll also need a blanket to put over the cage at night so the birds can sleep and not chirp at anything they see.

Okay... I found a really great website. Here's my information:
What to Put in the Cage (Must-haves)
1. 1 food cup per bird
2. 1 treat cup per bird
3. 1 grit cup per bird
4. 1 water cup per bird
5. 1 cuttlebone per bird
6. At least three perches
7. 1 swing per bird
What to Put in the Cage (Extras- Not Must-Haves)
1. 1 mirror
2. 1 bird bath (best kept out of cage so it doesn't get grungy)
3. Extra swings
4. 1 set of bells
Things to Know
Do not put cage in a drafty area, nor a place with extreme hot or cold temperatures or too much sunlight. Buy or make a cage cover when birds need to quiet down, as they believe it is night and will go to sleep. Securely fasten all items to the cage. Do not use string or cord to make swings or toys, as birds can easily be entangled in it. Do not put in more than one or two toys at a time so birds do not feel crowded. Put newspaper on the bottom of cage for easy clean-up of bird droppings. Change the newspaper at least one time per week. Parakeets enjoy baths. Use bath area with water shallow enough so it does not reach the bird's head. Use normal-temperatured water. Bathe birds at least one time per week. If a bird seems unusually itchy, give them a bath. If they remain itchy, it is probably because they are growing in new feathers. Help out by nuzzling your finger against the itchy area. If a parakeet starts yanking out it or it's mate's feathers, it's a sign of stress and you should see a vet immediately. If you get a pair of birds, make sure you have two of everything. Parakeets need fresh food daily, with seperate cups of food for each bird. Same with water. Parakeets enjoy listening to soft music- it's not nessasary, but the birds do enjoy it. Parakeets live for 7-15 years if they are treated well- some have been recorded to live for over twenty!

From what I hear grit is bad. Like,really bad. I did a report on the Green Cheek Conure's diet and they say grit is bad for birds. (I believe all birds,I could be mistaken)
And if you ask me,its best to buy some kind of litter type thing (But a birdie safe version! It can be found at PetsMart,Petco,etc) for their business and just scoop it out like its kitty poo and kitty litter.
But Pirakeet poo is probably smaller than Green Cheek or Amazon crap so newspaper may work fine. 
Anyway,if you need help with your Pirakeet(s) send me a PM. I have two birds so I do know a little bit. Plus my mom used to have one.

I'm not quite sure what exactly grit is. I'm guessing by your post that it's like kitty litter. If so, than is it okay if I just skip out getting the grit or products like it? I truly don't mind if they just poo on the floor of the cage- I know it isn't nessasary, but I plan to change that everyday, anyway. I just want to make sure- I'm a first time bird owner and I really want to do everything right.

Hah. I am not sure what grit is either! I just kind of switched subjects from grit to what to put at the bottom of their cages. For all I know it could be like litter.

I don't think it's litter. I don't think birds know how to use litter. I mean, you don't look outside and see a bird sitting, getting up, and throwing dirt on his crap with his feet, do you? They go when they want to, no matter what they're doing... One crapped on my hand once...

Heh... one crapped on my friend's hair once. She cried... well, she actually she cries about a lot of things.
Anyway, I'm not sure what it is. All the site says is to give the birds a cup of grit.

No,they dont,I'm just saying if you put something like corn cob bedding (I use this) at the bottom of their cage,you can just buy a cat little scoop and scoop it out. Its easier than newspaper.
While speaking of crap..our Amazon has pooped on dad many times and my Conure only did it on my once,only because I didnt react to the signs she had to go. (Different with all birds.)

I believe frit is just some kind of kitty litter for birds or something but I could be wron, its not nescecerry I know that.

I'v had 7 parakeets....
Usually 2 at a time. I remember my first one used to bite my finger everytime I put my hand in the cage.
The other one just nodded back and forth like he was psyco.

I used to have a friend that had birds, I don't think they were parakeets though.
She abused them, she didn't cleen thier cage or change water, I think they died.
By what I see you really did a lot of research, I'm sure you and your soon to be parakeets will get along, if you remeber to clean thier cage and care for them, not like my friend.
