I've never used Linux before so I prefer Windows. Dad was going to get me a Macintosh from work for my room (they just got new ones) but that plan fell through -_-

Windows 98 is so outdated :P You people need 2000 or XP.

Windows 98 was one of the best up-dates they ever made :P I still like it. Im using window xp home edition right now but as soon as everything on my linux system gets working im moving to it.

What's Linux? Oh well, Windows XP (Proffesional! Yay!) is what I'm stickin' with. Macintoshes are slow (I've used one).

I have never used Linux before, but I've heard it's really flexible and economical.

Linux (to me) is by far the most flexible operating system out right now. It has alot of things like Xemacs, which is like a geocities html quick help thing but you can work on it, then preview your page and all that stuff.

It also has the art program GIMP which is "supposed" to be the best around but... I dont agree with that. Sure its got plenty of options but... its the most non user-friendly program ive ever run across.

Linux! 8) My prefrence is either Knoppix 3.4, or Slackware 10. Both are highly portable, but not all that user friendly.

And as for the differences between the two:

The main reason why people use Linux is because of the completely open source software. Linux and all its programs are 'free' as in freedom, meaning that you can go in and change anything you want to about it, as the source code is included. There are many different versions of Linux, called 'distros' (as in Knoppix and Slackware) Linux can play 'nice' with Windows, meaning you can have both on the same system, if that's your thing. It was made by Linus Torvalds in 1991, and is based on the old UNIX systems (LINus UNIX)

Windows however, is more focused on being user-friendly, and sort of locks down on its programs so that users don't get too confused. Which can be a good or a bad thing.

Linux is usually run as a CLI (command line interface) where you use a text based interface to get what you want done. There are, however, two popular GUI (graphical user interface) that some Linux users prefer to use.

GNOME Screenshot: http://www.gnome.org/start/2.0/screenshots/csm-desktop.png

There also is a desktop made only for Redhat Linux and the Fedora Project, but since it seems to be a minority in the GUI's as of now, HBB won't bother to include it.

Thank you, and Goodnight

And if you like the linux penguin I think you would all love the KDE dragon when you turn off your computer. I'll get a screen shot of it and add it here in a bit when im not so busy.

Windows XP....We've always had Windows. I couldn't switch even if I wanted to (which I don't), as it's my dad's computer. :P

Windows, I just like it best.

I thought the KDE was what kept Linux systems up and running, I forgot. (XD) Because whenever my Lindows computer starts up, the last step (it's boots up like Knoppix) is the KDE is up and running.

I grew up with Windows, so I can't think of using anything different.

Sat Jul 31, 2004 9:37 pm

I've never used Linux before, even though I'd like to try it. I'm sure it would confuse my little mind, though. :P I use Windows XP for now.
