Panic! doesn't get much plugging, so they are indie
Are you for real?
I'd say the 349730635706735 people who bang on about them on Myspace while making sure their fringe still covers their left eye do a fair bit of plugging. As do TV adverts.
They don't NEED a huge marketing scheme because they have it in spades with all the kids who listen to them and think they're cool...
We're comparing apples to oranges here, guys.
Using the word "indie" is very broad. I would suggest using a more specific word. As it is a broad word indie does mean independent of labels or a member of an independent label, but the genre usually pertains to music that employs uncommon instruments like the harpsichord, violin, accordion, or even the upright bass.
The Decemberists, Wilco, New Pornographers, Bright Eyes, Rilo Kiley, We Are Scientists, Arcade Fire, Okkervil River, Spoon, and Of Montreal are great examples of "indie" the genre. Hellogoodbye, Say Anything, Panic! at the Disco, Motion City Soundtrack, The Academy Is... these are all rock bands that have decided to participate in the independent label scene.
Anyway, some of my favorite bands are:
The Decemberists (Awesome people. Hung out with them after a show. Very down to earth)
Rilo Kiley
Mountain Goats
Okkervil River
Spoon
Of Montreal (in small heaps)
Jenny Lewis
The New Pornographers
Pixies
Death Cab for Cutie
Neutral Milk Hotel
The Postal Service
DeVotchKa
Destroyer
Wilco
Elliot Smith
The Flaming Lips
Interpol
Imogen Heap
Sufjan Stevens
Andrew Bird
Arcade Fire
Belle and Sebastian
John Vanderslice (Actually talked to this guy before, he's pretty nice.)
We Are Scientists
The Shins
Bright Eyes
