My stats are bad compared to all yours, do you train at mystery island or go to pet laboratory?

For lower-level pets, the pirate training school is more economical. It takes a bit longer, but I think it's more worth it (last I checked, about level 39/40 would be the break point, meaning you would in theory have a pet with 78 str, 78 def, and 117 hp when you started at mystery island). This may change with inflation, though, and it may be that level 30 or level 50 are now the points where you should switch.

Remember that your stats can all be double your level, except HP, which can be triple your level, before you increase level.

For example, if your pet's stats look like this:
Lev 15
HP 25
Str 28
Def 18

You can train str and def some more, and HP as well, without having to worry about the level.

Also, you don't need to train on agility/speed. It's not necessary except with certain battledome items from the meridell armor shop, and you'll pick up faerie quests and the like that will give you enough of a speed boost. Or you may decide that you're not really interested in those particular items, which you may not be, so you'll never need to worry about it.
