I don't think you can start the step over. But it doesn't matter if you made them run off. They're somewhere in the forest. If you're having this much trouble, you might want to try mapping out your woods. Otherwise, all I can suggest is to keep at it.

Here's a tip, stay on the outside of the game "board" instead of going off into the middle.

I'm actually supposed to be studying for my professional exams in a fortnight, but nopes am on here tearing my hair out because of lil pink meepits!
Took me about an hour to sort out my vines/rope. my combination (should anyone wish it for posterity) was 0-6-6-4-0 [i.e. 0 icky, 6 rotting, 6 crumbling, 4 gross, and 0 decaying].
Then took me 5mins to get the meepit juice break which was amazing as I have tried and failed previously to 'get' this game lol.
And now I'm trying to track down my ghost meepits to make em dance. Aaaah! I'm mapping my maze in a word doc rather than on pen and paper hehe.

Dang it, I see the books, but the paths all wrap around it except for one.

For what is claimed as one of the easier steps in a plot, it is mocking me very, very much.
I consider easy steps to be ones that are not entirely based on luck.

I can't see the plot finishing on halloween, but I can see something big happening.
I'd imagine that we either:
a) Get a big new piece of information
b) Uncover a twist in the plot (possibly a new and cool character to be involved)
c) Reveal the enemies that we have to fight, bringing on the first wave (yes, yes if there is indeed a war blah blah blah.)
d) All of the above.
*Crosses fingers for d*
