I think, instead of making you buy something, and thus inflating the price, they should make the sidebar skins require you to do something nice. Since the skins would most likely be for your eyes only (you see them on your screen, so you get to appreciate them, rather than showing them off like avatars), there's no point in making you spend a whole boatload of NP. If they required you to do something nice-- like donating something of a particular value to the money tree, or adopting a pet from the pound, or even completing a quest-- it's unlikely that prices would inflate 500 times on a few items. It would probably never happen, but I think it would be nice to have something available to all neopians, rather than only those with the budget to pay thousands for items.
As well as looking pretty cool, each side bar as certain advantages and disadvantages. For example if you have a Faerieland side bar, you will win more on the Faerieland games, but will not be able to visit the Haunted Woods at all. Exactly what each side bar does will not be explained, that is something you will need to work out for yourself.
This is a pretty good idea but I'm not sure how many people will use a certain sidebar if they can't get into some parts of the site (I know I won't be using the faerieland one as I need to go to both haunted woods and faerieland to do my dailies!)

If yopur haunted woods daily is Test your strength you could always go from the games room.

Yup, that's probably it. One of the first sidebar's Adam showed us was the "Halloween/Haunted Woods" sidebar.
I'm looking forward to them, and I'm not. There could be problems with someone having a shiny pink faerieland sidebar, and then going into a dark black shop, or userlookup. It just kind of ruins the whole layout.
I don't know, I guess I'll have to see how they work, before actually saying anything about them.
I'd suppose they would be affected the same way they are now, I didn't have to change my lookup at all with the change (except the top of course), and I don't see how a different color could change how it looks on the same page. I'm just really excited about new advantages and disadvantages. I hope we can change it whenever we want to, or at least once a day.

I'm thrilled, seriously. This is one of the best ideas on Neopets since... *thinks* ok, so I'm not sure. But I'm still very much looking forward to it.
For people such as myself who missed the beginning of the avatar craze, this will start everyone off on equal ground and I may finally have the chance to collect something seriously
Oh, and I would absolutely *adore* a Lab Ray sidebar that gave you better odds at getting good zaps/stat-related random events. Hint-hint.

Couldn't you just change your sidebar to Faerieland, go to faerieland for the games, and THEN change it to something else and visit the Haunted Woods?
Starchaser, good question. I don't know, and I suppose no one except TNT knows the answer to that one.
We won't know until they come out, whether we have the option to not use these new theme things, or if we can change them at will, or what I'm wondering is if, say, the faerieland theme won't let you go to the haunted woods - would that mean anyone navigating from your lookup wouldn't be able to go there? And would that mean that even if you went to the games room to go to say, TYS, that you would be able to get there even that way?
Personally? I would rather be able to have my own custom sidebar to go with my own lookup. And from the posts on the boards tonight, so would alot of other people.
