My brother is obsessed with getting an iPod, he only has to save about $60 more, should I try to convince him to get a better one that won't break as easily?

Oh, and does the iPod have a warranty that will cover the repairs?

Apparently you have to get an iPod version 3 or 4 because with 1 and 2 the batteries explode after a year or something...

How do the batteries.... "explode"?!

Anyway... it's not good to use an iPod as an external hard drive is it?

There is another one similar to ipod, it is called creative zen.

I still prefer my ipod, it makes me look cool, store my music and I use it as a storage harddisk.

Another popular one is the Nomad, made by Sony. I belive Rio make some quality music players aswell. Two of my friends have ipods and the screens get easily scatched, they are fragile dont have very good antiskip technology, based on these two cases. Apart from their stylish look and easy navigational system I don't like ipods that much.

EDIT: My bad, Sony don't make Nomads...

What technology is Ipod? I thought mp3 was skip-free...

I use an iRock. I might get an iPod someday, but what I have right now suffices for what I use it for.

i have an archos which i have absolutely no problems with. :) they're kinda fragile (it IS a computer harddrive), but as long as you follow all directions and stuff with it it shouldn't screw up. and i think it looks better than ipods do (i think they're soooooo ugly).

ipods certainly aren't worth the money. i got my 20GB jukebox for like $230 when an ipod of the same capacity is like $400 at least.

Walking down the street, singing along with your iPod, lalalalala, suddenly the iPod in the palm of your hand blows up. That's scary..

By "explode" I think that they just ment fail.
I've never even heard a rumor of the battery actualy exploding.

And honestly even the battery failure statement is false.
I have many friends with first and second generation ipod's who have never had any battery problems.
The batterly problems are hardly widespread but the difficulty of replacing the battery if it fails has helped spawn this type of rumor.

As for the skipping
mp3 is only a format -- it dosen't skip or not skip.
mp3 players in general don't skip unless they're reading directly off of disk

I've never had my ipod skip because it loads it's information into a solid state memmory (several songs at a time) and plays it from there. But I haven't done anything rougher with it than jogging. Most mp3 players that read from soild state memmory don't have any skipping problems. That's one of their advantages over cd players.

As for the screen scratching that can be a problem if you're like me and abuse your stuff. I got a case for mine so i've never had a problem with it.

Check out this site, if you own an ipod. I know of some user from other forum that actually tried that out and it works. :D

Yes. Though I'm not sure if you'd have to purchase the AppleCare (Apple's warranty for all of it's products- two or three years of free repairs and the like), or if it comes with the thing for free.

can't find the sig from this set, so instead, you get a <3 .

I've got an iRiver mp3 player, and my brother says that iRiver is second in the market for mp3 players (next to ipod, of course) and I think that's ridiculus because I've got 25 songs on my mp3 player and it's full. I really really want an ipod mini, but I don't think it's quite in my range of things I can afford. Actually, I'm not even sure what that range is. The last time I checked in on how much money I had was like two years ago. Hm.
