I have tried to get into the first book at least three times, but I get bored halfway through the first chapter. The books just don't appeal to me.
I believe I'll pick up the first one at the library and try again, since so many of you seem to like it. ^^

(And the movie sounds awful... Jim Carrey's playing Olaf, and they're putting the first three books into the first movie... Plus, looking at the two trailers, it seems more like a comedy than a dark children's drama/horror)
That's because it is a comedy. It always was. =P
I've only read up to book 8, but I love the books.

Touché.
(Though the books are more subtle comedy- you don't know it's supposed to be a funny parody of 'omg liek angst!1' books if you simply pick it up and skim. The movie, though, looks like full-out 'hahaha' comedy. o_o)

The movie looks gross and terrible. So much of the humor is in Lemony Snicket's writing style...

I've never read them. I don't like books with sad endings, they make me cry

They're too unfortunate, lol. I think the 11th book is coming out soon; what was it called again? It appears they go underwater... I haven't read the 10th book yet. What happens there? I hope Violet and Klaus don't die; they're not on the cover and when the 9th book ended they were on a cliffhanger. Actually, just about all of the books ended at a cliffhanger so who knows. o.o

Book 11 is called the Grim Grotto.

*can't wait for September 21st*
Anyway, the books are really easy for me to read, but I enjoy them. They're sarcastically funny.
I dunno about the movie, though. It seems like the slap the first three books into one movie. *shrugs*

I'm not sure what everyone else sees in them, but the sadist in me likes them because the endings are never, ever happy. Nothing good ever happens. Bwahaha. Haha. Haha. Heh. Anyway, I don't have very high hopes for the movie. The books are only funny because of the writing style.

My little sisters real into them, I mite read them. But I think they mite be just a tad under my reading level, I though they were alot darker then I thought, but I guess they are only childrens books.

IMO, the endings weren't really that sad...

You should skip the beginning Chapter 1. I always did when I read the first book. It's almost completely pointless.
Speaking of the books, has anyone figured out what VFD means yet?

My guess is Volunteer Fire Department, but that's just me...

They're so unfortunate, see:
Book 6- Very Fashionable Dolls (I think)
Book 7- The Village of Fowl Decrees (I think)
I don't think there was any reference to it in Book 8, as far as I remember.
UPDATE: I remember that singing group they met was also VFD, but I'm not sure of their exact name. If anyone knows then tell me if you want, but I don't really care about thatt.
And Madam What's-her-face's eye symbol sorta looked like VFD in Book 9.
That's all I've got.
