They can become quite annoying, I think we should all just stick with fixing our own grammer, they'll have you running in circles trying to tell you to add a qoutation in every little spot possible, not that you have to, but still.

Fixing our own grammar*

Annoying they may be, but needed they are ;).

I think if we did have a grammar checker, there should be an option to switch it off.

The hack that Alex Row uses is quite nice. It only checks your spelling if you click the option to do so before posting. It also doesn't change the spellings unless you tell it to. Otherwise it will just offer suggestions for any words it thinks may have been misspelled.

Ah yes....

Lets not forget that we speak the language of neopets around here too...
Heh, not that its a completly different language, but that there are plenty of names and items that are made up.

It would be nice if it had an option in the Admin Panel to add words to its dictionary (Neopets, for example), like in Microsoft Word. :)

It does.

I have a picture of the Spellchecker options available via the Administrator Control Panel. Here: http://www.deviantart.com/view/9728381/

Would it be possible to add more than one word at a time?

British spelling could be added to the dictionary, granted, it would be very time consuming though. And like Robot said, you don't have to accept what the dictionary tells you is the right spelling.

I don't think so, but someone could modify the hack to allow more than one word at a time.

Hi, everyone. Alex Row is me. I was stupid to make another account to attempt to start again posing as a new user after I had abused my PM and got it disabled. Sorry.

Anyways, I have another suggestion for future consideration, maybe. It's listed below.

Name: Change Style on Index
Link: http://www.phpbbhacks.com/download/585
Benefit: You don't have to go into profile to change the style you're using. A drop-down list appears near the top of the forum index, above all the forums on the index. To see, you can click on the link below. My forum has this feature implemented, though it's location was moved to the left of a menu that was added. Go ahead and try it out. Even as a guest, you can change styles.

Note: Well, it's not as useful as the other modifications, but I like this feature, and I thought I'd suggest it anyway.

Yea I like spelling canadian. COLOUR!

So IMO forget the spellchecker, but I really like the favorites idea. I've seen it implemented on a few forums and I like how it works.

YEA!! WE DEMAND OUR 'U'S!!

I like both those ideas. Quite a few people have saiud forget the spellcheck but it wouldn't be mandatory. You could turn it on if you wanted to. I also think the spoilers hack sounds like a good idea, so maybe at the next update these 3 could be added.

For those of you who really want a spellchecker, there are free ones that you can install for most browsers.

Here's one for firefox: http://spellbound.sourceforge.net/
and one for internet explorer: http://www.iespell.com/

That should take care of most people. (= I've used both in the past, and I'd have to say I've liked them.

There's also dictionary.com, which has its own plug-in software that allows you to make immediate searching, but you have to open a new page or leave the page you're currently on. Does the same thing go for the two links you provided, iconplast? The good thing about the Spell Checker is that you don't have to open another page, or something. The spell checking occurs within the forum, just like if you were using Microsoft Word.

Sat Sep 11, 2004 6:37 pm

Nope, you don't have to leave the page at all. You just right-click in the text box that you want to spellcheck in, and it's on the menu. You can also add words to the dictionary and selectively ignore, just like spellchecking in a word processor (as I recall -- I've been too lazy to reinstall either since the last time my hard drive died).
