While we're on the topic of laptop problems...

If nobody can help me with this, it's alright. Anyway, I have a really old laptop. I want to say it's older than seven or so years old. It's "newer" than one of the older laptops which has that really old OS on it (3.1 perhaps?) but it doesn't have a pentium processor so I'm fine if the laptop can't be fixed.

I wanted to get some of the VGM (Video Game Music) off of it but the laptop does not turn on at all. I tried pretty much anything (yes, I tried making sure there was power to it :P ) but it doesn't seem to start.

If it helps any, it seems like there's something loose or some piece broken inside because when I shake it, I can hear something.

Would any miracle save this laptop or is it gone? o_O

If you're running Windows 3.1 (unlikely, to say the least), the hardware should be dead by now (well, for any relatively common tasks today it's already unusable).

You need to consult someone proffesional with physical access to your laptop -- laptops are rather messy to open up and examine yourself (it's too easy to damage things). If the hard drive is not dead, you can probably arrange some sort of transfer through a 3rd party (computer experts at your local shops?), even if the rest of the laptop is.

I have a question myself. Is there a program or something that can act as a timer and turn my computer off at a certain time? If not, I could always use the computer's system settings, and tell it to turn off after a certain period, I guess.

There are a number of commerical computer programs that do that (Shutdown Now comes to mind)
If you don't need anything fancy, you can use the windows shutdown program to shut off your computer after a set interval (after you type the command). Open up a command prompt, and type shutdown to see all the options availible.

Sorry it's taken me a month to reply.. in truth I forgot about this thread. Anyway, so I tried the shutdown thing in command prompt. It tells me, amoung other things, that "shutdown -t xx" will set a timer to shutdown my computer in xx seconds. However, when I entered "shutdown -t 7200" (for 2 hours), I immediately got logged out and was taken to the Welcome screen. So, does the timer work or not? O.o

Well, if this doesn't work, I can just set my laptop to go into hibernation or something after 2 hours..

Incidentally, is it bad if I leave my laptop on 24/7? At the moment I turn it off when I go to bed, but when I'm downloading stuff I sorta want to keep it on at night. I know people do this to their computers all the time, but this is my -new- laptop and I really wouldn't want it to fry or something. =/

Thanks for all the help!

Hey, thank you to everyone who helped me with the SimCity 3000. As it turns out, it was an issue with our firewall. (Weird, huh?) I just wanted to let everyone know. :)

amarise, that really is weird, but glad you got it figured out :)

vivian - I would think that just leaving a laptop (or any computer) on 24/7 is just not a good idea. Laptops are very small, get hot faster than anything (except maybe a mini tower), so unless you really have to leave it on, like for d/l something, do turn it off, give it a rest.

My computer has 3 fans (athlon - they get really hot) and I still find if I've had it on for a long time, like 8 or 9 hours, if I put my hand on the case, it can be very warm. And that's up off the floor with air circulation all the way around it.

Actually Hunter, the laptop I want to fix is running NT. An older laptop, which currently works fine, is running 3.1. Bad wording on my part. :)

Senja, you hear something rattling around if you shake it? That does sound like something's come loose, which is easy enough to have happen.

I suggest taking it to a good computer tech, let them open it, see if it is in fact a loose connection or somethiing's come disconnected. I agree with Hunter, having seen the 'guts' of a laptop ... I wouldn't touch anything.

Given the age of the laptop, I don't know if it would be possible, barring fixing it, but I would ask the tech if there's a way to connect that laptop to another computer and copy everything off onto a disc. It's worth asking anyway.

Has anyone heard of something called MidAddle or ads234? It's really messing with my internet connection. Everytime I try to go to a website, it'll redirect me to ads234.com then take me to the site. I tried searching Google (which took forever) for different methods to get rid of it, but it just...won't...die!

Also, both Ad-aware and SpyBot can't seem to pick it up.

everconfused - To tell you the truth, I don't know whether something is loose or if the piece that broke off of the bottom of the laptop is stuck inside.

Regardless, something isn't working and it won't turn on. o_O

For fixing the laptop, I'll have to find the experts as opposed to the "experts", if you get my drift. I'm guessing the experts will probably end up costing a good handful of money and I don't know if it's worth it if I'm just wanting some of the video game music off of it.

If you have HijackThis, use the second. If you don't want to use it or don't have it, use the first.

Both are the same with the exception that the second one uses the program.

By the way, thanks for those who offered input.

As it turned out, the old hard drive was fried - overheated, and basically the components came as close to melting as they could without actual fire. The battery was, in fact, a completely separate issue.

My poor girlfriend is going to have hours of cheating at The Sims to recreate those houses...ah, well. She did it before, she can do it again.

Thanks Tailseh! I installed a trial firewall that came with my computer yesterday and so far it is working wonders. The uploads have ceased, and I've got three months to get myself a full antivirus. I dont want to use the trial ones too much. Anyways thanks for the help. While I'm waiting to get an antivirus im gonna do some reading up on worms to try and find a bit more about them.

Another smaller problem though. My cookies and temporary internet files seem to be deleting everyday, that is, whenever I get on the internet I'm always logged out of neopets, ppt and other places. Is there a way to prolong the cookies and tmp files so that i can stay logged into neopets and other site?

Optimus, if you're still around - I just got to reading this very good topic!

Hmm, I've never heard of anything that auto-deletes cookies and temp files with the exception of maybe Norton Ghost (called something like that) - part of Norton security. Is your homepage changing? Asking in light of the fact you did have bad stuff on your computer. Is Norton the a/v you've got now? But even that shouldn't be doing that ... it should do it after you log out, not while you're on a site. Almost sounds like a timing out thing, which is too frustrating for me. Did you install SP2? that thing is pure evil! I installed it and uninstalled the next day, too many problems, too much not working.

You've got hijackthis ... that's a good thing - but I won't touch anything after scanning with that - I'm not that savvy. Get Spybot Search and Destroy - official site is: http://www.spybot.info/en/index.html Also definitely get spywareblaster. I think there's a link to them on the spybot site. I have CWShredder which saved my puter from a hijacker once (from flamingtext) and ad-aware is my "back up", along with McAfee a/v and I did d/l stinger which is a free stand alone (looks more specifically for certain virus/trojans, etc. - will get rid of mydoom, things like that) you can get from the McAfee site.

Personally, I do go to setting and delete cookies and temp after any site I visit as part of my safe surfing. Also have cookie handling set up a bit differently than some people I know. Go to your internet settings. Click Privacy, then Advanced. Put a checkmark next to Override Automatic Cookie Handling. First Party Cookies - select Accept. Third Party Cookies - select Block. Put a checkmark next to Always Allow Session Cookies.

You may be surprised at the number of privacy reports that appear in the lower right hand corner of your IE screen - and where some of them come from. Especially if you do get spywareblaster.

Sorry for the late reply, I just saw this.

I set my Privacy ctatus to the settings you mentioned and I've scanned with Norton Antivirus. I also put in a Norton Firewall which has been a great help with blocking those uploads. As far as I know, the uploads have completely stopped, even with the Firewall off.

I'll test out that privacy settings thing and see how it goes.

Thanks for the help. :)

It's not showing up on the Spybot list - I just checked in "ignore objects" which has a full list of everything it searches for. Last update on Spybot was 10/14. I did find this at PestPatrol on MidAddle: http://www.pestpatrol.com/zks/pestinfo/m/midaddle.asp - it has information on this thing and how to remove it.

Nothing came up for ads234. That one does definitely sound like a hijacker though. Have you tried just a general harddrive search, including hidden files using that name to see where it may be? Also, in your IE settings, type that in to both your security and privacy restricted sites. I don't know what else to tell you. Have you been to the Spybot help forum? They may know something about both of these.

Shapu ... oh Grrrr that's what I was afraid of - a fried hd :(

For help in removing Ads234:

See this thread:
