If I were you, I'd go up to her and tell her how I feel about this rumor and how I feel about her spreading it and it wouldn't be good.

There should be a reason that she's spreading this rumor. From your POV, I'd assume that she has a little crush on you or something and when you wanted to hang out again she got really excited because that was what she wanted to hear.

But it can be her just trying to make a fool out of you.

Just smile when someone mentions it and tell them it's not the truth, and tell them what really happened. Don't whine or fuss that it's not true or they won't believe you.

Rumours like that are often not solved by a direct confrontation. The person spreading the rumours will undoubtably deny it, and then the next day you'll have another batch of fresh, steaming dung circulating around the school.

Trying to stop a rumour often makes the situation worse.
Spreading a new rumour inevitably makes the situation worse.

Doing nothing about it will probably mean that it will blow over eventually. If pressed, you can tell your side of the story without much passion. It seems that if you deny something fervently, people will believe the exact opposite of what you say (therefore the "rumour" becomes "truth"). I think it's because people think, "Why are they so upset? They must be hiding something."

In any case, all that will be known is that some guy asked some popular girl out. That's what happens with popular people: they get asked out a lot. Your own popularity may even rise.

And maybe she really does like you.

I've had a few rumours go around about me, and a number of rumours that people have attempted to spread. Reason why they only managed to attempt it? I ignored it. I've found if you make a big deal about it, people continue going on about it, because they know it gets to you. If you just plain ignore it, it'll blow over because they can see they're not getting the desired reaction.
