My mom told me to read this article that was in the newspaper today about geocaching. I am so hooked now (even though we haven't even started). I can't wait until we get a GPS unit in December. :P

Okay, geocaching is basically like a treasure hunt, but with a GPS unit. You first have to have a GPS unit and you have to go onto the official geocaching site, Geocaching.com. You look up any zip code, and it lists "caches" in that area. You input the provided waypoint into your GPS and locate the cache.

Usually the cache will be a container with a logbook (to log the date, time, notes, etc. into it), and some items. If you take an item, you have to leave an item. Place the cache back where it was, and you're done. If you want, you can go back onto the site, go to the cache's page, and leave a log/comment.

There are virtual caches, which are usually landmarks that have information, and you have to e-mail the cache maintainer info that shows that you where there. Oh, and those who are not geocachers are called Geo-Muggles. :P (Or just Muggles)

Sounds pretty interesting, but I have seen better things like this.

Like, there is one. Where you get assigned a target. Someone who participates and lives in your area. And you need to shoot him with a water gun. :P

Oooh, I've done it for about 2 years or so. We haven't found many though, there's not a lot to be found in our area. It's fun, though. I like climbing around in the mountains and getting dirty. xD

I've heard about it before, but have never done it myself. Sounds like fun.

bookcrossing
n. the practice of leaving a book in a public place to be picked up and read by others, who then do likewise.

(added to the Concise Oxford English Dictionary in August 2004)

Geocaching sounds pretty neat...I've never heard of it before. My dad is obsessed with maps and such, though, and he has a GPS system that hooks up to his laptop. I looked at the site and found a few caches near my house, so I may have to investigate when I go home tomorrow for Thanksgiving break.

There's 1,447 in a 100 mile radius of my zip code. :P Of course, I live in Detriot lol. It sounds like a lot of fun!

I just went geocaching today with my mom, and boy was it fun! We went to 5 caches, but we only successfully found 3. Two of them were virtual caches and are local landmarks, so we basically didn't need a GPS. xP We're going to do 3 each weekend. If we have more time we'll add more.

I saw an article on the news about that! It's pretty intriguing. I would like to try it once time, except I wouldn't know where to go. :>
