Just finished the Grim Grotto. The plot is getting ever more complex and sticky. I hope that the final book will be able to explain things well and not be a flop.

the series was too long and draggy for my liking...
not to mention the ending is kind of predictable...
stopped reading after the snakes story...

It's one of those series where you just have to keep reading it. Especially after Book the Eighth, the plot gets MUCH more interesting.

Well, I (finally) managed to catch up after reading the Slippery Slope and the Grim Grotto. According to my research, here's some predictions for the 12th book:

-The Flying Thing that Hector, Isadora, and Duncan jumped in at the end of book 7 may be returning.
-The letters at the end (there are 6 or 7 or maybe 8 in total) doesn't tell the tiltle of the 12th book. This is a first, because in all the other letters from the books, no matter how bad they were (*cough*The Hostile Hospital's letter about the Carnivorous Carnival*cough*) the title of the next book could still be readable. Not anymore.
-According to the ending picture, with the cap on the beach that says 'Hotel D' then it must take place at that freaky Hotel thing that begins with a D. When it left off, it was Tuesday morning. The 12th book, possibly the last, must go up to that Thursday or beyond.

That's all I could uncover. :P

The hotel is called the Hotel Denoument. Also, there will be 13 books.

Anyway, here're my theories...

The Beatrice refered to in the dedications of all the books is the Baudelaires' mother. In LS's unauthorized autobiography, there's an article about a performance of a play entitled 'The World Is Quiet Here', in which Esme Squalor replaced the original actress and many other changes were made. We know that LS was engaged to the original actress, but had to break off his engagement because he was on the run from the law. We also know that the original actress was able to whistle Mozart's 14th symphony. In The Wide Window, we learn that Mrs. Baudelaire was an actress, and that she could whistle Mozart's 14th symphony. Also, it's mentioned in one of the other books (too lazy to look, sorry :P ) that Beatrice married someone else because she believed LS to be dead.

This coincides with my other theory, in which LS is tracking the Baudelaires because he's their godfather.

Also, the 'JS' refered to in the end of The Grim Grotto might be Jerome Squalor or Justice Strauss. Of all the characters in the entire series, they're the only people who haven't been mentioned again in separate books.

(And the movie sounds awful... Jim Carrey's playing Olaf, and they're putting the first three books into the first movie... Plus, looking at the two trailers, it seems more like a comedy than a dark children's drama/horror)

The actual series is half-comedy anyway.

Do what you will; but I will hinder it if I may.

I mis-spoke, sorry. =) The series is comedy, but I've found it to be more sarcastic, parodying "Woe, I am angsty, pity me fo I am, uh, angsty... Woe?" books. From the trailers, however, it looks like the movie will be regular silly haha comedy, rather than a parody.

can't find the sig from this set, so instead, you get a <3 .

13 books? Well, so much for the '12th book is last' idea... oh well. :P
Anyways, I wonder what the 13th book could be about? Or what the 12th book could even be about... I wonder when it'll be released? Remember the delay between the Hostile Hospital and the Carnivorous Carnival?

The name of the next book is something like the horrible hotel. Have you noticed that the end picture in every book gives a clue to the next one. This one shows a bellboys hat that says hotel d. For some reason I remeber reading the name Hotel Demount or something. I will have to do some more research.

I don't think it'll be Horrible Hotel... H has already been used for his alleteration techniques (Hostile Hospital).

Oh, and in the Grim Grotto, I wonder why Klaus didn't use the Tidal Charts to see which way Quigley went down the Stricken Stream...

Did the tidal chart actually show the Stricken Stream? I thought it just showed the mouth of the stream and then the ocean...Besides, he was ordered to track the sugar bowl...

I personally really like the book, but I can understand why people who don't like them... er, don't like them. I finished the Grim Grotto last night, and I realized that yes, the actual books are pretty dull. But that's okay, you're not supposed to read them for them, you're supposed to be figuring out a mystery that doesn't start until you learn about VFD. The only actual book I found to be interesting was The Unauthorized Autobiography, and now I only read the others to answer questions posed in the TUA. I also really like all the pictures in TUA, and I'm going to be starting a black and white photo album of pictures based off of those.

Book 6 was a crow flying over Veblen Hall.
