Hmm, I think I'm one of the rare few that say "I ought to have" instead so I've had little oppertunity to get confused. And when I do use should've, I pronounce it shou-dove instead of should-of.

The should of/should've thing reminds me of the word "won't".

"Won't" is a contraction of "will not". And it makes no sense! =O

I actually looked it up once, out of curiousity.

It also goes on to discuss how the verb "will" varied in form from place to place, and in some places was spelled and pronounced as "woll", which pretty much explains the strangeness of the word "won't".

I say things like 'should've' or 'would've' as 'shud-uv' or 'wood-uv'

My dad always takes the proverbial and pretends I've said should of. Git.

Do you know if the Canuckian accent has that problem? I catch myself doing it all the time.

Incidentally,today I was told that the Southern Ontario accent is Valley-ish.

Because the world is full of grammatically incorrect people.

Yes, Xil. Some Canuckians probably do have that problem. I, myself find it slipping through some times.

Schwa is just too comfortable for the good of languages. I mean-if you keep your mouth nice and closed and rounded while saying "should," who wants to spread their mouth wide to make an 'ah-ve' sound when society accepts 'uh-ve'? 'Ah-ve' is probably a longer sound than 'uh-ve', too--if you try to say "Should-'ah-ve" extremely fast, it comes out as "Should-'uh-ve".

Ugh, I catch my friends saying "should of" all the time. XP Maybe they should revert to the way Sable is saying it- "I ought to have". Sounds neater, haha.

grammartically/grammatically are often confused. I'm pretty sure that grammatically would be the proper way of saying it, but things change..

I pronounce "should've" as "should 'ev" if I say it really, really slowly. "Should of" ends up being "should, of" since that's usually how I think it appears in correct sentences (although to be honest, I can't visually recall one right now).

I do it more from my accent (I have a really thick Texan accent...)... I say Y'all and Should of, and all of that kinda (I say that too) stuff... My friends have recently begun to enjoy pointing out the fact that when I say thing, it comes out "thang"... It's because my friends are all from up North! (Minnesota, Alaska...)

EDIT: AH!!! I just used my cell phone to record myself saying thing, to see if I really do say thang, and my voice is EXACTLY like my cousin's!!!! I'm scared!!!

I must confess, I say should've and it sounds like should of but I never type should of. I should say Should Have but I don't. *muses* maybe I should!

I always put should've, or should have. Writing should of, to me, isn't very logical either. Fair enough, it may should like it, but should've... where's the ve in of?

On a side note, I typed: we're the ve, instead of where's the ve, first time.
