Legend of Loch Ness

Image

The Loch Ness Monster is supposedly living in Scotland's Loch (Lake) Ness. "Nessie" as she is called first is the best known cryptozoological creature in the world. Carvings of this unidentified animal, made by the ancient inhabitants of the Scottish Highlands some 1,500 years ago, are the earliest evidence that Loch Ness harbors a strange aquatic creature. This looks a lot like the stone carvings of the Chupacabra.

The earliest recorded sighting of the Loch Ness Monster was in the biography of St. Columba by Adamnan in the year 565 AD. The monster apparently attacked and killed a man who was swimming in the River Ness.

The monster didn't make headlines again until August 27, 1930 when 3 fishermen reported seeing a disturbance in the water. The men watched as a creature 20 feet long approached their boat throwing water in the air. As it passes them, its wake caused their boat to rock violently.

The men were convinced that the disturbance was caused by a living creature. Following the story, the newspaper received several letters from people claiming also to have seen a strange creature in the Loch.

In 1962 The Loch Ness Investigation Bureau was formed to act as a research organization and clearing house for information about the creature. In the beginning it only conducted research for a few week in the year, but by 1964 they established a more permanent presence around the Loch. Eventually the Bureau established camera stations with both still and cinema cameras with telephoto lenses. They had vans which served as mobile camera stations, and underwater listening devises. Searches were conducted using hot-air-balloons and infrared night time cameras, sonar scanners and submarines.

A great deal of information was discovered about the Loch, but they have yet to produce any concrete evidence of a monster.

Rabbit the Hunter
Native American tale retold by Sanjit
I believe it is a legend.

ImageSanjit

One day Rabbit took his bow and arrow and went hunting. He left the house where he lived with his grandmother and hopped through the forest, happy to be out and about. Suddenly he saw huge footprints in the track.

"Wow! Check out the size of this!" Rabbit said, twitching his nose. He hopped into the middle of the left footprint, then took six long hops to reach the right one.

"This dude is some giant" he said out loud, talking to himself because no one else was there. The forest was silent. He couldn't even hear a wing flap, or a bear breathing.

"I bet that giant's hunted everything!" said Rabbit angrily. And sure enough, when he checked, there wasn't anything left to hunt.

Rabbit went home to his grandmother and told her he hadn't hunted anything for dinner because the giant had been to the forest first. She patted him on the head. "Don't worry dear. I've picked some berries. We can have them for dinner."

"I don't want stupid berries. I want to eat something I've hunted!" Rabbit grumbled to himself. He didn't say it out loud because he didn't want to hurt his grandmother's feelings.

The next day Rabbit got up earlier, hoping to hunt before the giant came. No luck. Everything had gone already. "It's not fair!" cried Rabbit, stamping his feet.

Each day Rabbit got up earlier and earlier, and each day the same thing happened. The giant got there first.

Rabbit became angrier and angrier. "I will set a trap for the giant. And when I catch him, I'll shoot him with my bow and arrow." He strung a net across the track to catch anyone who walked down it. Then he went home to his grandmother, thinking "this will be the last night I have to eat berries for dinner. Tomorrow I'll be able to go hunting."

Wormy and friend

The next morning Rabbit got up extra early and went to check on his net. "Oh no!" He wailed.

"The giant has walked right throng it and made a big hole!" He went home and told his grandmother. "Don't worry dear, have a berry" she said.

"I don't want any more berries" cried Rabbit "I want to eat something I have hunted." Then he looked at his grandmother and thought for a moment. "You know some magic. Will you make me a special net?" he pleaded.

"Alright. If it will make you happy." She told Rabbit to go away because the magic was secret. When he came back she gave him a net as thin as a spider's web, but stronger than any net ever made.

Rabbit tied it across the track in the forest. The next morning, he got up extra early and rushed out into the forest. He hopped round a bend in the track and skidded to a halt. There was a blinding light coming from his magic net. It was so bright, he couldn't look at it for more than a second. "Oh No!" he wailed. "I've captured the SUN".

"Let me out of here," roared Sun in a deep load voice that shook the forest. Rabbit fell backwards onto the track, then hopped home as fast as he could to tell his grandmother.

"You must let Sun out of the net," said his Grandmother "Look how dark it is everywhere." "I'm scared" said Rabbit.

Sanjit

"I know" answered his grandmother, "but if you don't let Sun out of the net it will always be dark. Here's a magic knife. Go and cut the net." Rabbit hopped back into the forest.

"Let me out of here" roared Sun, thrashing around in the net with his big feet. Rabbit slowly moved forward, his little legs shaking with fright. The closer he got, the hotter it became. Closer and hotter, closer and hotter.

Little legs shaking and sweat gushing from him, Rabbit shielded his eyes and reached up to cut the net with the magic knife.

Sun struggled free then jumped upwards. One of his big feet kicked Rabbit on the shoulders, almost knocking him over. The sky filled with light again and all the animals cried out in happiness.

Rabbit looked at his sore shoulders. They were scorched brown with the heat from Sun's foot - and they are still brown to this day.

The End.

Long, long ago there lived a mouse in the forest.

The mouse was fearful all day and all night, for the sly fox always tried to catch him and eat up him.

The mouse was very clever and was able to hide from the fox for
a long, long time. But one day, he let his attention wander, and before he knew it, the fox was right there!

The mouse was very scared and ran
off as fast as he could. But he knew the fox was faster, so frantically he searched for a place to hide.

He spied a cone that he thought was big enough to hide him, so he scurried inside. Well, he was hidden well enough that the fox couldn't find him, but really the cone was too small.

And to this day, you can see the hind legs and the tail of the
mouse sticking out from the Douglas-fir cone, where he is STILL hiding from the fox!

In the v-day spirit(although its a few days late. I give you

The Legend of Cupid

Cupid is the most famous of Valentine symbols -- a mischievous, winged child armed with bow and arrows. Cupid aims his arrows at people, causing them to fall deeply in love.

In Roman mythology, Cupid's mother Venus was jealous of the beauty of Psyche, and ordered Cupid to punish the mortal. Instead, Cupid fell deeply in love with her. He took her as his wife, but as a mortal she was forbidden to look at him.

Psyche was happy until her sisters persuaded her to look at Cupid. As soon as Psyche looked at Cupid, Cupid punished her by leaving. Their lovely castle and gardens vanished too. Psyche found herself alone in an open field with no signs of other beings or Cupid.

As she wandered trying to find her love, she came upon the temple of Venus. Wishing to destroy her, the goddess of love gave Psyche a series of tasks. Psyche was given a small box and told to take it to the underworld to capture some of the beauty of Proserpine, the wife of Pluto.

During her trip she was given tips on avoiding the dangers of the realm of the dead and was warned not to open the box. But Temptation overcame Psyche and she opened the box. Instead of finding beauty, she found deadly slumber. Cupid found her lifeless on the ground. He gathered the deadly sleep from her body and put it back in the box. The gods, moved by Psyche's love for Cupid made her a goddess.

Today, Cupid and his arrows have become the most popular of love signs, and love is frequently depicted by two hearts pierced by an arrow -- Cupid's arrow.

Korea in the Eye of the Tiger

Long, long ago when earth and the heavens were one, at a time when animals could speak like humans, a divine god spirit called Hwan-in, king of the eastern heavens, ruled that part of the world where the morning is born each day. In that ancient time when the five beasts stood at the four corners of the world, the Blue Dragon in the East, the White Tiger in the West, the Red Phoenix in the South and the Tortoise and Snake in the North, the king sent his son, Hwan-ung, to earth in the eastern land and instructed him to build a new country there. Hwan-in's son possessed great power, honor and wisdom and was very much loved and trusted by his father. Hwan-in had great confidence in his son and foresaw that one day his son would make a great ruler for the eastern land.

I read the whole thing. I like it and a few other Korean stories. This legend is of the founding of Korea.

*tries again, only with something he finds more exciting*

By RICARDO P. MADRID M.

The legend of the pre-Columbian city commonly known as "Ciudad Blanca" or White City is very old. The ruins of this city reportedly exist near large deposits of white sand, from which it derived its name.

This capital city of the kingdom of Tlapalan, also known as "The ancient place where the aurora originates", is mentioned in Toltec and Mayan texts as most probably existing in northeastern Honduras in what is today known as La Mosquitia.

According to these ancient writings, Ciudad Blanca is the origin of the human deity called Quetzalcoatl by the Toltecs and Kukulkan by the Mayas and revered for having bestowed wisdom and knowledge on these cultures. This man-god and his disciples were said to have come from a race of white-skinned people. Who knows, maybe they were survivors of the lost continent of Atlantis or their descendants or ancient European explorers such as the Vikings.

In 1544 Cristobal Pedraza, Bishop of Honduras and protector of the Indians, wrote an account of his expedition east of Trujillo and sent it to the King of Spain. The bishop communicated that from a mountaintop vantage point he observed large Indian settlements in the flat lands of the Sico and Black river basins. His native guides said that east of the San Pablo Sierra existed a land called Veragua whose main city had skilled goldsmiths who cast gold artifacts, including gold plates from which the lords and nobles of this land ate. This account seems to initiate the legend of a mysterious lost city filled with treasure.

In 1939, U.S. explorer Theodore Morde claimed to have found the ruins of the lost city, where he saw the remains of a temple dedicated to a monkey god. During a five-month expedition for the American Indian Museum of the Heye Foundation of New York, his expedition cut through dense vegetation and navigated miles of waterways in dugout canoes in this vast uncharted land.

Near their final destination was a waterfall and rapids, with pure white sand along its course. These explorers finally arrived at a site that they later called the Lost City of the Monkey God. The ruins were walled and covered a large area with remains of large buildings, so it once must of had a population of thousands.

---->>>>

There are more details on the site I found that go into detail of the findings of this site. You might think that what I posted of it is enough, however. Just click on the image for the link. It also goes on to explain that this city remains uncharted and most likely undisturbed. I am quite impressed. Such a legendary site must be very difficult to find if it exists. I am a believer and have been for some time.

I also found some more fun articles on the site. Really educational. :D Who would have thought Honduras could be so interesting?

I'm a fan of urban legends, like the legend that says Marilyn Monroe was a size 16:

Image

This legend probably continues to be spread because it implies that our standards of beauty have changed so much that a woman considered to be extremely beautiful for decades would be considered fat by today's standards.

Most of Marilyn Monroe's clothing was custom made for her, so it isn't possbile to just check the tags. :) Even if there were tags to check, women's dress sizes have not remained constant over the years. Clothing manufacturers purposely adjust their sizes so that an average size woman wears a medium.

Marilyn was 5'5.5" tall, and probably weighed between 118-140 pounds (allowing for normal weight fluctuation/ dieting). A woman of her height at the heaviest end of her weight range would probably wear a size 12 today. If she did wear dresses considered size 16 in the 1950s, they would not be equivalent to today's size 16. Although Marilyn was 3.5" shorter, her measurements were comparable to those of Elizabeth Hurley:

True Olympians

Image

Description
Based on a true story, this is the comedic saga of four Jamaican athletes going to extremes to compete as bobsled racers at the Winter Olympics. With few resources and virtually no clue about winter sports, it's an uphill course for this troupe from the tropics who are sliding on thin ice as they go for the gold in Calgary, Canada. Refusing to let anything stand in their way, these four Jamaicans enlist the help of a down-and-out ex-champion American slider named Irv. Unavoidably drawn back to a sport he had come to loathe, Irv is faced with coaching a team of complete novices. But once committed, he is determined to turn them around and to somehow right the wrongs of his own failed career. It's a bumpy ride but with pride, determination, and dignity, the bobsledders make their impossible dreams come true.

Find an amazing story of a person or team who made it to the Olympics. Ready, set, GO.

Summer 2004 - Susan Bartholomew Williams of Littleton was the last member of the U.S. Olympic Triathlon Team to be selected for this year's summer Olympics in Athens, Greece.

Susan has been racing for the U.S. National Team at the elite international World Cup level for over seven years. She was working hard towards earning a spot on the team that was headed to Sydney in 2000. However, just a few days before the trials were held in Irving, Texas, she learned she was pregnant with her first child. It is dangerous to let one's heart rate get too high during pregnancy, so she had to hold back and let others lead the race. She named her daughter Sydney in honor of that sacrifice.

She did not give up her dream, however, and the additional four years of hard training have paid off and she will be headed to Athens in August.

This year she has been working with former world champion and Boulder resident Siri Lindley as her coach. Lindley will also be going to Athens as a commentator for NBC--not only for the triathlon, but also for field hockey, which she competed in at the collegiate level.

The team was selected using a combination of three races and the international world ranking of the athletes. The races were this year's World Championships in Spain, a World Cup race in Honolulu, and an international points race in Bellingham, Washington on June 13th.

Susan was in a very tight battle with Laura Reback of Florida for the final slot, and it came down to who crossed the finish line ahead of the other in Bellingham, the final qualifying race. Susan came in third, Reback fifth.

"This was a dream race for me. It really hasn't sunk in yet," Williams said. "Now I will just train a little harder for the next few weeks and will celebrate a little bit."

Sheila Taormina, who was on the 2000 team, and Barb Lindquist are the other two women on the team.

<<<<----

Its a good thing she was willing to preserve the health of her daughter by taking it easy. Not only is this woman a true Olympian for making the team with her efforts, she's a good mother. That sets a wonderful example to the world.

Oh, here's the link:
