Looks like Charmander leads by a comfortable margin while Squirtle and Bulbasaur fight it out for second place. I've always held the opinion that Charmander > Squirtle > Bulbasaur, but again, that's only my opinion.

Bulbasaur has the advantage early-on, as it is strong against Brock, Misty, and, to a lesser extent, Lt. Surge. Charmander, on the other hand, is horribly fated against Brock, and especially Misty. However, towards the end of the game, Charizard rips through almost anything thrown at it, the Elite Four included.

Another thing to take into consideration:
Exeggutor is superior to Venasaur and Victreebell is arguably on par with it.
Lapras, Starmie, and arguably Gyarados are superior to Blastoise.
However, there is really no fire Pokemon, save possibly Moltres (which comes very late in the game), that is clearly superior to Charizard.

When I used to play, I started with Charmander or Squirtle usually. Bulbasar sometimes. ;P

First game I played I chose bulbasaur, just because the manual said it was good for starters. Second time through I chose squirtle, restarted the game because I had raised most pokemon through duplicated rare candies from the missingno glitch...
Third time I chose charizard and it has been my favorite starter ever since . I have good memories of my charizard that knew flamethrower, slash, fly and dynamic punch (traded it to crystal, and I know, not the best moveset), saved me lot's of time in the battle tower.
Don't get me started on pokemon, used to have a huge addiction, knew all the names and moves and bred them to get shinies/good stats...

I always chose squirtle. It was easy to beat Brock, and I loved water pokemon

bulbasaur gets you the easiest through the first 2 gyms, but afterwards a charmander would do better...

I've actually gone through the game using all 3. I like Charmander the best. Squirtle is good, but Bulba, and pretty much all other grass/poison types just get pounded by the phychics later in the game.

That reminds me, I've only played through silver once and used the fire thing there too.
