Practice talking really fast (If you're doing that kind of debating)

Be careful not to talk too fast. You want to be very clear and concise.

In the type of debate I'm talking about, you try to talk as fast as possible.

Perhaps it's not but still, it's not good to talk fast, you need to THINK fast, but talk so it's colliquial (sp?) and able to communicate with the audience. It counts in your style category.

Thank you so much for all the information you've provided me with everyone, its definately been helping and I feel a lot less nervous about debating now (the fact that I don't like public speaking might be harder to deal with, hahaha). It is very much appreciated.

Hummm... I may not exactly know how this debate is going to be run but I do believe there is a greater chance of what I'm trying to say having to be clear and concise rather than just getting as much as I can in. This guess comes from the fact that the course I'm doing (and the society related to the course is the one running the debating) requires us to take a class that's sole purpose was to teach us to write clearly and to avoid any associated technical jargon that may confuse those that haven't had any prior experience in our field :)

Try to avoid saying any of the following -

Never, always, all, none

etc

As if you say 'this ALWAYS happens' or 'That NEVER is the case' then you generally get stomped all over unless you're talking about something with NO exceptions X_x for example things true by definition. 2 + 2 = 4, all bachelors are male etc

Say it as concisely as possible. Every extra word is a opporturnity to twist and abuse the very things you said. If you're very consise, they must respond to that direct point, and it's harder to have your words twisted etc. ^_^ Have fun.

something tells me thats what sophists do all the time
