Really, everyone rides English here, there's just a handful of Western riders that I know of and I've never seen an Australian saddle... Although I saw team penning yesterday, it looked really fun, they said I can go help settle if I borrow a "real" saddle. o_O

No FAIR! At all the big barns in our area, most people ride Western. I'm on my high school's Equestrian Team....there's a decent amount of English riders, I suppose. I want to try Team Penning next year though :P It looks like so much fun. And to settle the cows, you get to...*gasp* stand there on your horse!! hehe. At least, that's what they do at the competitions, the team that just went goes and stands in front of the cows to settle the herd before the next team goes.

Do you jump?

And cute ferrets by the way ;)

Your high school has an equestrian team? That's so cool, I can't even imagine one around here. What sort of stuff do you do?
And your pic of Bailey is super cute, what type of horse is he?

And I jump some, maybe up to 3 ft, but really not a whole lot, especially not in this winter mess... I'd love an indoor right now. But we still have a few issues with "slow." Hopefully we'll stay under control enough to try a hunter pace and make it over the jumps there too. And I know settling cows looks boring, they seem to use a seperate group just for that here... but it's probably not quite so boring on a spooky horse that's never seen a cow before. :P

Meowth! Your ferrets. Are too. ADORABLE! AAAH!

I want a ferret, but I believe that would be illegal in California...

Bailey's an off-the-track thoroughbred  Not really the best type of horse for your first horse, eh? We've worked through some of his biggest issues (ie attacking you when you tried to tack him up) and right now I'm basically training him to be a riding horse. I love him to death.

And yeees, we have an equestrian team. It's incredibly small - three people this year not counting me because I don't ride as Bailey's not ready - but next year it'll hopefully be bigger. We go to three meets, which are these HUGE competitions with zillions of horses and riders. Some teams have like 50 kids and more horses. There's all kinds of events, western and english. It's sooooo much fun, I love it even though I don't get to ride in it till next year.

There's an indoor arena at the barn I board Bailey at :D It's awesome. I know what you mean about slow - I don't canter Bailey at large yet as he likes to speed up on the long rails, I've been doing it on the longe line with someone at the other end. We've only hopped over little bitty jumps - and you call 3ft not really jumping? Bailey's jumped 3 feet, sure, but not with me on him. The jumps during fences at the equestrian meets are 3ft max, though, so hopefully I'll be there by next year. Amazing how many horses get disqualified in the qualifying round just because they won't go near the jumps.

And I might PM you about this later, but I have some homework ;) I'll post on this topic later as well. yay!

Here's one or two pics of each of the non-human animals in my family, however. Relax, my fellow dial-up users, each picture's file size is rather small.

This was taken a long time ago at my old house. o0o My family raises Great Danes so we always have one or two. The dog in the front is Kami and the dog in the back is Markus. Kami passed away a few years ago but we still have Markus. :3

This is Snowpea when she was a puppy and we had cropped her ears. She was so cute. >w< She passed away a few years ago too.

Ear- and tailcropping is such a stupid and useless thing to do >_< I mean, why chop off parts of animals just because we think it looks good (which I don't)? Gah... To point out I'm not saying this is your fault neondalion, it's just my opinion about it in major.

And now maybe on-topic? lol. Very cute dogs, though I have never liked big ones, not that I'm afraid of them, they just take too much space and sperad dribble everywhere :P

Because Kennel Clubs (like the AKC) say that in order to show a dog, it has to be ideal, and somebody decided years and years ago that boxers, for example, should have cropped tails and that danes should have cropped ears. And if you're breeding dogs, then you want them and their parents to look as much like the ideal as well.

I'm not a big fan of the practice either. But, like they say, "don't hate the player, hate the game." Write a letter to your local KC.

...Alex, I officially envy you! *envious* How much I want to have cats for pets! But noooo mummy would not let me. Says they're annoying (yeaaaa right, just as long as I love them I would do anything) and part of the "yin" part (....for once I want to beg her not to be so obsessed with these things).

:(

Oh I do love Angel! She is incredibly pretty and looking sophisticated. I've always loved cats. ^^

Yes but now uncropped versions of many breeds are showing up, maybe not with tail docking (i've heard of some horrendous ways that this has been done... just awful; like using dog nail clippers, sticking the pups tail through and SNIP. No anesthetic, no nothing), and it makes me happy I have a breed of dog thats just been so incredibly over bred it has weird genetics (go shepherds!).
My friends schnauzer has uncropped ears. (I don't know if Schnauzers get their tails docked or not, but since they're stubbs... I guess I should assume), but he's a cute little blighter even with the uncropped ears.
I think it should be considered cruelty to the animal, and be made illegal (I thought it had in some parts of the world?), just as docking the tails on horses was made illegal.

True on the uncropped. Never at Westminster, though.

As for how it's done - it's done without anaesthetic, because it has to be done to very young pups who don't yet have developed cleaning habits - otherwise they'd chew at the scabbing, and most anaesthetics that you'd use on puppies under one month of age (which is when it's done) are last-resort drugs, because they can cause serious damage to developing livers. Local anaesthetics are used, but they can only inhibit a certain amount of pain.

And schnauzers are docked. There are only a few dogs born tailless, but none with stubs.

EDIT: back on topic...those are really sweet-looking Danes. How long have you been breeding?
