I used to be a huge addict, and I just got back into her because a friend is tearing through her books. The writing isn't the best in the world, but the stories are really addicting. So, if any fellow Pierce-slaves are around, make thyselves known!

I'm talking about the ones about Tortall, not the Circle of Magic. COM are probably just as good, but I haven't read any of them.

That's me! I don't know why, I just love her books. I've read the "Alanna the Lioness" series and "Protector of the Small" and I just finished her newest one "Trickster's Queen". I usually don't like to read series or just one particular author, but I've read most of her. I've never read "The Immortals" series though, are they any good?

I just got that book from the sci-fi book club, I haven't read them yet but they are my next to read books. Nice to hear that she writes good stories, I had never heard of her before but the Immortals series/book I saw looked interesting. I can over look bad writing (most of the time) in lieu of a good story.

I read Protector of the Small, and the Immortals series and Trickster's something . They were pretty good. Protector of the Small was my favorite series.

I've read all of them not the best stories but I love them for their classic nostalgic appeal, and their addictiveness. All the books set in Tortall are the ones I like best, for some reason I just like those ones more than the Circle of Magic ones. The Immortals is rather good except the NumairDainesquickiness. The only book of hers I haven't read is Trickster's Queen. I think my favorite BOOKS would have to be Alanna: The First Adventure, Lioness Rampant, Wild Magic, maaaybe Emperor Mage, In the Realms of the Gods, and Trickster's Choice. And for the Circle of Magic books, my favorite is the very first one, Sandry's Book.

Tammy Pierce is alright, but I have a few gripes about her books. I read the entire "Protector of the Small" series, and I gotta say Keladry is one of the most unbelievable characters ever. She's perfect. She's an uber fighter, a fearless leader, 100% moral in every way...she's the mother of all Mary Sues! Also, the "Circle of Magic" series is horrendously boring. I remember reading that and wondering if something would ever happen.

I do like her books' feminist leanings however. It's definitely nice to get behind a female hero. It'd be nice, though, if all her characters weren't such Mary Sues.

Ah, twas a warm summer's night when I discovered these books, and although the ideas are not fresh, Pierce has a way of composing old ideas into a fresh tale. I was rather shocked to find these novels in the children's section of the library (my kid sister had signed them out and I had stolen them from her) as the subject matter approached in them seem rather risque for youngesters.

I am no longer addicted to them as I find her latest series featuring Kel to be quite disappointing and only half-heartedly finished Lady Knight (which was a hefty weight). I don't think I will be returning to her books if she decides to write more. It seems that the magic of Alanna has long faded with me.

Yeah, the feminism was the main reason one of my friends reads Tamora Pierce. The other reasons were for the magic and the medieval-like setting.

I just started the Circle of Magic books, because I wanted to read more Tamora Pierce and I don't like the Trickster ones. Aly is one of the most irritating people I've ever not met.

About the Mary Sue-ness, yeah, I do kind of agree. You're not supposed to have nothing bad to say about someone whose private thoughts are not secret from you. On the outside someone like Kel can look perfect, but we know what she thinks, and it's boring. She's not a horrible person on the inside or anything. Still, the books as a whole are totally addicting, and therefore I read them avidly.

And I just have to say, does anyone else find it at least slightly annoying that Daine and Numair became a couple? When I first read that they were kissing, I was like "Wait, isn't Numair like 30?" Ugh, I guess there were just no other mortal guys in the Immortals, but still.

Yes, I am addicted. I've read all her books multiple times, except for the Trickster books. And I own all of them except Wild Magic and the Trickster books. I do like the Tortall books better though.

Well, in "The Immortals" series, I read Emperor Mage first and it was sort of boring...possibly because I had no idea what in the world was going on...
The first one I read by her was Street Magic. That was really good ... *rambles on continuously*

Most of the characters in her Tortall books seem to be either Mary Sues or very Mary Sueish, and as a result, I've never really liked them as much as the Circle of Magic ones. I do like the Tortall books, but the reading experience hasn't been as great as CoM.

CoM rules. My favorite character has to be Triss, as she's one of the greatest non-MS characters I've read about. She's not exceptionally pretty, she's chubby, her magic can be uncontrollable and on top of it all, she's not happy-happy-joy-bounce-bounce-I-love-everything. The last alone makes her far different from most Mary Sues. Except for the angsty tragic-past 'Sues. But they eventually succumb to the happy madness.

You're all far too harsh. The books aren't meant to be some sort of literary masterpiece, just an enjoyable piece of fiction.

Well to some not only is it enjoyable to read it....it's just as much enjoyable critiquing it

I love Protector of the Small not for the Mary Sueness. More for the fact that Kel is Original. I mean, in most common books, talking to animals(sure!), Sword/magic phenom(oh yeah!), Spies(Tom Clancy!) is often found. Kel had a different style. You don't see glaives, jousting and wrestling much in fiction.
