I am so confused by this. Do they want us to use the number 2 or the number 24 when it comes to the pieces?

I got a 21 digit number as well...

As for the calculator, View -> Scientific gave me a longer one, but even the short one held 30-something digits.. (running windows xp)

I had no commas, not sure about past ones.

aaah no wonder, I'm not using that calculator, lol thanks, and what year number should be use ? 365 or the 365 1/4

I got 21 digits. I don't mind checking the math, just PM me. My answers are wrong about half the time anyway.

I used a standard 365. I probably should have added in the 1/4 day for leap year, but should I have also subtracted a day for March 3rd, since it's cancelled?

Although this one's really tough, you have to admit that it's worth it if you can get the pirate warning sign.

I know, but they don't exactly tell you how many pieces there are, how large is the board etc. And I don't see any way of playing short of inviting someone and goodness knows how long that would take.

actually it takes you right to the board when you invite someone. i thought that was rather strange.

There are 88 different spaces on a board. There are two different types of ships.

You know, I was just thinking...

...this would be a much tougher LC if you had to figure out how long it would take him to come up with every possible permutation by randomly pulling pieces out of a bag. The solution would be a much huger number.

The question assumes that he won't set up the board the same way more than once, but he's not a very smart pirate anyway, is he? The odds of getting any *one* specific possible permutaion of the board by randomly pulling pieces out of a bag is pretty dang small. At 30 seconds per try, he'd be setting up his board for a very very long time.

Do not laugh...I tried to re-enact this, did not read the question properly. I was just starting several different set-ups, counting them...and I realised it might take a bit too long. (*probably right!*) Reading the question again, I discovered the word "years"... thus I had no choice, I had to take my calculator... am I glad I did not spend the rest of my life searching in vain for the answer...

suppose its a small board with 4 squares.

He could pull and "board" with 1/16 chance (assuming infinte number of each pecie). But a lucky piarte might pull 16 differnt boards in 64 total pullings while an unlucky one might try 50 differnt boards and have only gotten WWWW(hes the same guy who is still playing burried treasure for the avatar).

And weewoman. Considering the answer is 21 digits long, that means id have taken you and least 100,000,000,000,000,000(thats 100 quadrillion, or 1000 times a hundred trillion) years . It have been well longer than the rest of your life. Even if a robot could work 1000000 times faster than this dude = youd need at least 1,000,000,000(one billion) of them just to be done in 100 years.
