Don't you think it may be because they can't spell? A lot of people who struggle with spelling, spell phoenetically. Besides, it's the thought that counts.

When the kids who do that are teenagers, it gets scary.

It depends for me. If the person has English as a first language, is mature enough to spell properly (ie 12 and above), and the word is quite a basic one (like birthday, sense, etc), bad spelling will make me doubt their intelligence.

Though of course I won't expect everyone to spell "phonetically" correctly. :P

Age really has nothing to with it. My friend is rubbish at spelling and grammer. I swear, his writing is completely illegible but he's a Maths genius. He's incredibly intelligent, he just can't spell. That's why I got so het up about that comment you made earlier. He's far from moronic.

My friend learned how to spell the word 'what' at age 12.
I'm not trying to insult people or anything.
I'm just saying that they don't teach kids as good as they use to.
Spelling 'what' at age 12 well I spelt 'encyclopedia' at age 4.........

Not teaching kids right?

Have you ever heard of dyslexia?

Dear lord. And it's people who can't spell who are apparently 'moronic'

Jeez, get off your high horse. You may have learnt how to spell at an early age but you've still got a lot to learn kiddo.

If that's dyslexia, than 95% of the kids in this town have it.

Unless you'd like to present me with a carefully executed study of kids in your town, to see whether their spelling meets the standard expected of their age, I suggest you rethink that.

Twinkle's right, you seem to have a heck of a lot to learn.

as for the Dyslexia argument.
i have my opinions (as always) but i wouldnt touch that one with a barge poll.

(sence sence sence)

edit: for the record: im dyslexic, as is my brother (hes far worse than i however) and i did fine.

I'll think you'll find Twinkle wins with the important back up from Igg. :P

I don't believe that every word you misspell is 'for kicks'.
But I shan't go through your post and pick out your misspelling. Because you did it for kicks, right? ;)

Being unable to spell does not always indicate a lack of intelligence. End.

It signifies a lack of linguistic intelligence. Of course, it also depends on the person you are talking too. If you are talking to someone like Igg or Twinkle for example, you can spell badly but not leave an impression that you lack intelligence, apparently.

Of course bad spelling does not necessarily equate to low IQ, but the easiest way to strike a good first impression of intelligence and maturity is to use proper spelling and grammar.

If you are trying to convey an impression of a non-intellectual (perhaps to make people feel more at ease around you), use poor spelling. This is probably why some magazines use chatspeak - to make the average chatspeaking youth feel closer. This however may make more intellectual ones feel as if the magazines are deliberately "descending down to their level".
