Recently and I've been trying to call my Aunt Bridget in the US, so we can organise a chess game online. I live in the UK, she lives in the US [Alabama, to be precise]. I was wondering if anyone could help me with what I must dial... Her number is:

205-###-####

I think you should say "I want this number in the United Kingdom and they'll forward you to it, but I'm just guessing.

Ski, you're quite correct. You'll need to dial 00-1-205-###-####. 00 is the code to access international dialing when you're in the UK, and 1 is the country code for the US. (BTW, Scott and Dawn, while you two are technically correct, that's only out of luck -- the national long distance code happens to be the same as the country code for the US, but that hardly ever happens anywhere else, so it's not the best rule to rely on when trying to make international calls.)

If she wants to call you, she'll need to dial 011-44-(your area code and phone number). 011 is the code for international dialing in the US.

And don't forget -- international calls are expensive!

Well, I knew it was 1 for the country code for US. Had to call home when I was off at Japan once. Totally forgot about the 00 thing...

Pft, that's because it's 81-1-(number) to call the US from Japan. Every country has a different way to access international dialing, and some even have several (one for each phone company).
