I think the new series is great =) Christopher Ecclestone is a great actor and although I wasn't sure if he was a good choice I think he really makes the show. There's been a lot of variety in the storylines so far and it's good fun telly xD I can't blame him for quitting after one series though, he is a famous actor and much in demand so it makes sense that he wouldn't want to get typecast (seen much of the other doctors lately? Little Britain doesn't count :P ). Miss Piper is also a pretty good actress, I liked that Canterbury Tales thing she was in which was what got her this job too I believe. Better than the other Dr Who assistants that I can remember.

The special effects have seemed alright for me, only been a couple of occasions where I've notcied them being patchy (fire in first episode being a prime example). If there are any other huge sfx blunders then I'm just not noticing them because it's Doctor Who I guess :D Can't blame the beeb too much when they made Walking With Dinosaurs =)

Hmm... having seen that Casanova I reckon David Tenant could be really, really good as the doctor. Chris Ecclestone's ok but seems a little awkward at times, as if his heart isn't fully in it.

As for the sfx, well as others have said: it's Doctor Who, it's tradition - the SFX have always been a little tongue-in-cheek, that is definitely part of the fun. It's not some dead-serious sci-fi show like Star Trek (and even that show had more than its fair share of polystyrene boulders in its heyday) - it's allowed to poke fun at itself. And we've really been spoilt by action films' multi-million dollar SFX budgets (most of which seems to be spent on either computers or pyrotechnis these days). What's wrong with using your imagination once in a while? Maybe it's just the rose-tinted glasses (pun unintentional :P) but the new show's looking good to me.

Saying that, I even enjoyed the Sylvester McCoy episodes so maybe my standards are abnormally low :D

I'm looking forward to David Tennant as the new Doctor. I wonder how long Rose will stay around for? Ages I hope.

I for one am loving the new Dr. Who series, it's nice to see it finally back on our screens. The scripts are top quality and the actors are great, even Billie Piper, which really surprised me because I hated her before hand. As for the special effects, it wouldn't be Dr. Who if they weren't a bit dodgy ;)

I have to agree with everyone here, I hope this stays on for a long time. This new series and the casting have come out great. In Canada we get to wath it on the CBC on Tuesday nights (tonight!), but the episodes are a bit behind, the latest episode was the sixth episode: Dalek.

I also get to watch the old series on BBC Kids, they aired the episodes of Tom Baker9 (4th), then Peter Davison (5th), and now John Pertwee (3rd). They're all great, the only problem is thet now the old episodes of Doctor Who on BBC Kids are aired at 1:30 am.
