0.0 So, my mum's a teacher.

She is going to a workshop this week to teach her a new teaching method that will be instituted in all schools in my state in the coming years.

There are some changes. 0.0 There are three grades on tests--A, B, and Not Yet. If you get the "Not Yet" one, you get to retake the test. If you still get "Not Yet," you can take it yet again! O_O

There is no extra credit assignments in this new teaching style.

There is homework, but all homework counts a "checkmark" (1 point). No matter how tough the assignment is.

Also, they want everyone to talk, not just the teacher. The teacher is no longer permitted to call out names to answer questions. Each person has a "partner." They will tell each other aloud the answer to the question. Like, the teacher would say, "Let's review for the exam. Review the questions on page 666 with your partner," instead of calling out names to answer each individual question aloud.

._. Does anyone else think this is just crazy, or am I the crazy one?

That's pretty damn stupid. If they get a "Not Yet" they shouldn't be allowed to take the test again. By that time, they will be able to find out the answers and what not. Unless it's a different test each time.

As for the homework, well, homework in my high school doesn't count as anything in the first place so it's all good.

And for this partner thing, I don't quite understand it. Can you explain a little more?

What grade does she teach? I think depending on the grade, the testing method could be good for elementary students who may be struggling (or it could be a horrible method for junior high/high schoolers who just don't care and get away with it)

I told my mother who's a teacher herself, she thinks it's a horrible method since it doesn't make students fully accountable for their actions.

I believe o_0 is in high school and considering his mother teaches in his school, it's probably for high schoolers. Which would make matters worse.

She teaches high school, however, the new method will be for all grade levels.

You're supposed to have a different test each time, but many teachers are too lazy to do that.

The partner thing... instead of calling on a student to answer a question, the teacher will make each student tell their "partner" the answer aloud, so everyone is talking all at once.

That won't cause the class to not listen to the teacher. What a perfectly good method.[/sarcasm]

There are professors in college that are already having a hard time teaching this generation because of the lack of teaching critical thinking in K - 12. We already teach to the test...and it's proving to be detramental to college students. I agree with inrun...100%.

Oh, I forgot one thing.

If you get an A or B on the test, you can also choose to retake it, like the Not Yet kids. So if you get a 99 on a test and you want a 100, you can retake. :S

I LOVE IT! Not the method. The method is so freaking stupid it isn't funny. Glad I'm homeschooled.

I'm sorry but this "not yet" thing is ridiculous. I feel America is way behind in their school curriculum as it is compared to other countries and this is just going to make it worse. I'm not saying we should exceed so much that kids have no life but school but this just seems like a way to make it so simple anyone can go on ahead and graduate while disregarding the fact that they may be behind others in certain areas. This sound worse than the "no child left behind" stuff that they are trying to get fix.

They did the Not Yet thing so kids could feel they were excelling and make them feel good about themselves.

And because their crap "studies" show that a kid needs to study something 28 separate times (not all in a row) to memorize it.

It's times like these I'm glad I live in the UK.
