If your computers are networked to a router, you should check to see if the cable came loose. If all cables are securely in place and the connection still doesn't work, unplug and replug your router. It will reset all connections to the network.

Okay, well, this problem has been bothering me for a long time, even months I believe. My laptop constantly shuts down. It happens when I do anything: play games especially, but sometimes when I have no programs open. Sometimes it stays on for a couple of hours, sometimes for 5 minutes. Sometimes shuts down 5 or more times in a row, not even 5 minutes between each of them. It is completely random.

We might take it into the shop, but I figured I'd ask here first...:|

It's possible that the laptop is just overheating.

Yeah, but I don't even put the bottom of the laptop on the ground or on anywhere. I perch it on my knees and let it get plenty of air, since I figured that's what was happening. The fans supposedly work perfectly, even though the bottom of the laptop gets really hot.

It's gotten worse since I started that. v_v

Ok, I have two problems/questions.

Ok, first one. I seem to have a virus on my computer but I have no idea what it is so I can't fix it. Whenever I try going to google and a few other search engine sites they either don't work or bring me to a page that redirects me so I can use them (though its not very useful). Anyone here know what the problem is?

Secondly, I recently downloaded Mozilla Thunderbird for my email but I don't really know how to link my email account to it. Like, I know what to do but I don't know what to put in some of the blanks for like the server stuff and things like that. Can anyone tell me, using Yahoo information as their examples?

Thanks in advance.

That's some sort of spyware hijacking your browser. Scan for it and remove it. Then use a virus scanner to look for Downloader trojans.

The information for your e-mail depends on your ISP such as SMTP and POP3 server information. Look it up on your ISP's website for their mail server address.

Do you know where I could get a scanner for the spyware or trojans?

Ad-Aware and Spybot. Update the reference files first, and set the scanner to check for everything. Never use "Perform smart system-scan" because it's not as smart as it claims to be. Instead, "Use custom settings" option and check everything you can. As for Spybot, make sure to update the detection rules and immunize your system. Enable "Browser Helper" to "Block all bad pages silently."

As for a virus scanner, I use McAfee 4.x only because it's DOS based and that the company I work for provides it for me. For a commercial user, I would suggest AVG. It's free and it works effectively.

I would not suggest using Norton because there are many trojans and viruses that can bypass Norton's scanning system. A trigger can disable the Norton detection altogether.

FreeBSD question, if anyone uses it.

I'm thinking about installing BSD, I burned the two ISO's to seperate CD's and stuff. I'm really too lazy to partition, and don't really want Windows to coexist with BSD anyway, must I format my C: to get Windows off of there? Or can I just boot the installation and tell it to replace Windows?

You can boot the installation, and delete the windows partitions from there, I think. (I haven't used bsd, but mandrake and red hat have those options)

Thanks Tailseh, I used to have an old version of Mandrake, but I didn't find it as good as seemingly everyone else in the Linux world did <.< Thanks again for the help though :D

Umm embassingly enough my Java doesn't like my computer so all it turns to is a red x in a white box.

Any solutions?

Here's the deal. My brother and I share my father's computer (because it's awesome) and somehow he mucks it up with all kinds of spyware, adware, and viruses. And then he blames it on me, and I get into trouble. His excuse is, "Who spends more time on the computer?" And when I reply I spend so much time on it because I am fixing it, he just says, "Ad-aware is just a crappy program that causes viruses." It makes me furious. And to boot, I only spend 30 minutes to an hour on the computer, whereas he spends nearly 3 hours.

Any suggestions so I can get him caught? I've been getting into a lot of trouble lately.
