Welcome to PPT Countdown!
How Countdown Works
For those of you who don't know Countdown is a programme stareted in the United Kingdom, presented by the late Richard Whitely and Carole Vordeman. The idea is to find the person who is ultimate at Language, Maths and just plain common sense. The game consists of 3 different rounds:
Words
9 letters are randomly selected. You must find the largest word possible using only those letters, and only each letter once.
Example DETSPLOAR
There are no nine letter words.
Possible 8 letter words: Leopards; Leotards etc.
Numbers
6 numbers are chosen. The possible numbers are 25, 50, 75 and 100 (The 'large' numbers) and the numbers from 1 to 10 (the 'small numbers'). Using these numbers, and the four basic mathematical operations (+, -, *, /) you must get a 3-digit target number.
Example: 100; 75; 4; 9; 4; 8 | Target: 315
100/4 = 25
25 + 9 = 34
34 - 4 = 30
30 * 8 = 240
240 + 75 = 315
Simple
Conundrum
The simplest of the lot. A simple 9-letter long anagram.
How online Countdown Works
Depending on the number of people who sign up, I intend on having a number of leagues. Each week or so, I will run a round of countdown, which consists of a combination of all 3 rounds. Scores are worked out using the system below. The person who has the top score of each league is promoted, and then the person who has the bottom score of each league is demoted.
Scoring
Words Rounds:
In each league, the person who has made the longest successful word will gain the appropriate number of points. If that person scores a 9-letter word, instead, they gain 18 points. e.g.
Alan, Betty and Gertrude are playing.
Alan and Betty get a 9 letter word (Ligatures)
Gertrude gets a 7 letter word (Guitars)
Alan and Betty get 18 points; Gertrude gets 0 points.
Number Rounds:
In each league, the person who gets the closest to the number will score an amount of points based on how far out they are.
0 away - 10 points
Within 5 above or below - 7 points
Within 10 above or below - 5 points e.g.
Alan, Betty, Gertude are playing.
The target is 700. Alan gets 698, betty gets 702, Gertrude gets 703.
Alan and Betty score 7 points; Gertrude scores 0 points.
Conundrum:
If you solve the conundrum, you score 10 points.
Signups
In order to put people in leagues, I must get an average playing ability. Becuase of that, I ask people to
