((Great editing everyone....

I STILL haven't finished my intro post *grumbles about school* but I should have it finished by later tonight. Also, Rachel and I are considering taking control of another kingdom each, so that we only have two kingdoms left (which, if they aren't taken, some of you might also get to take if you wish). I'll be taking Pearl, and Rachel with possibly be taking Peridot. The other remaining kingdoms are Zircon and Opal. ))

(( Ria, I never really actually said that I there was a possibility that I might do Peridot. I just said I might think about it! :P I don't know if I will even write for another kingdom. But if I do, it will probably be Zircon.
If anyone would like to do write for another kingdom, can you please PM either Ria or I? Please keep in mind that writing for two Kingdoms may get a bit hectic. I was thinking of waiting to see if more people would join but I guess it may be better if each person representing each kingdom had their own lives, personalities and histories.))

(( *glares* Well if you weren't so busy complaining about the 6th book you might have been able to clarify for me!

*sigh* I'll just say that Pearl, Peridot, Zircon and Opal are still left for now. If they aren't taken by the weekend I'll create a character/info for Pearl, and anyone else is free to do the same for the other kingdoms. Don't forget that you'll always be able to create other side characters later on.

Thankfully, I've FINALLY finished my intro post. Hope it was worth the wait ;) ))

“The Empress is right through here Miss,” the young servant carefully opened the door to the throne room and stepped back allowing the Empress’s new bodyguard through. Arelore walked through the doorway swiftly and immediately began to take in her surroundings. The dark green walls were covered with silken tapestries depicting the many animals and plants of the Emerald Kingdom, there were many potted plants hanging and standing around the room and there was a large window facing the forest on the northern wall. Gazing out of this window, with her back to Arelore, was a young woman with simple yet stylish clothes and a rather plain hairstyle. The woman turned around when she heard Arelore approach, revealing deep emerald eyes lined with dark makeup. Arelore studied her for a moment then spoke quietly, “I am looking for the Empress.”

The woman frowned slightly and studied Arelore before replying, “Then you’ve found her. I am the Empress Meret Ailuros. Who might you be?” Arelore was taken aback for a moment, this young and simple woman was the Empress of the Emerald Kingdom? She frowned in disbelief, “I am your new bodyguard, Arelore Lirqualie, formerly of the Amethyst Kingdom.”

Meret nodded slowly, “I see. Well, welcome to the Emerald Kingdom Miss Lirqualie.” She turned around silently and once again began to study the forest through the large window. Arelore studied Meret for a few minutes and was about to speak when the throne room’s door opened and another servant stepped through. The servant walked a few metres into the room then addressed the Empress. “It is time you got ready for the Festival your Highness. I will be waiting in your dressing room.” Meret turned slightly and nodded, “I’ll be there in a moment.”

Arelore’s eyebrows raised in surprise. “Wait a minute. You aren’t seriously going to the Spring Festival today, are you?” Meret turned to her, frowning, “I most certainly am. It is my duty as Empress to officially open every Festival, and I plan to do so today.” Arelore folded her arms, “But, yo-" Meret held up her hand for silence, “No, I’m sorry Miss Lirqualie. I will not argue about this. Your concern is duly noted, however it is unnecessary.”

Meret then turned and left the room, she made her way to her dressing room, with Arelore trailing a few metres behind still frowning. Meret entered the dressing room, it was relatively small with a large mirror completely covering the wall directly opposite to the window. A wooden chair with a simple green cushion sat facing the mirror, this was where Meret went to sit down. A large stone cabinet took up much of the room, the doors were slightly ajar and this revealed shelves containing clothing, accessories and make up. The servant entered the room and moved swiftly to the cabinet, she removed a hairbrush and some clips before beginning to fix Meret’s hair. Another servant entered, this one went to the cabinet and brought out a few containers of make-up including gold glitter, glittery eye shadow and shiny mascara.

It only took about five minutes for Meret’s make-up and hair to be completed. The servants then brought out a bright yellow sash and a pair of bright green leaf-shaped earrings. During this process Arelore had leant against the door while staring out of the window lost in thought.

* * * *

Arelore shifted uncomfortably, the bright green sash she had been asked to wear for the Festival felt odd. She wasn’t used to wearing baggy clothing, even if it was only a sash. She watched as Meret walked up to an elevated platform to speak to the many people gathered.

Meret smiled as she looked out at the masses of people, her people, who had gathered to celebrate the coming of Spring in this traditional Festival. “People of the Emerald Kingdom. As we always have, and always will, today we are gathered here to celebrate the coming of Spring to our precious land. And I hope that the coming of this season will represent the coming of greater things for our kingdom. I hope that the coming of Spring will represent not only the coming of new plants and new animals, but the coming of new beginnings and a new era of peace for our kingdom. We are not alone in this world, there are many other kingdoms and many other races, and for centuries now our people have been friendly and helpful to them all. But some of those kingdoms haven’t returned the kindness and friendship that we have offered them. So I now hope, that with the coming of Spring, these other kingdoms will reconsider our proposal of peace and will join with us for mutual benefit.”

Meret took a deep breath before grasping the slim dagger a servant handed to her. “Now, without further ado, I pronounce this Spring Festival, OPEN!!” The dagger sliced through the air before tracing a thin line through the vertical rope near Meret’s head. The rope snapped apart, and as it did a large tub filled with glitter and confetti tipped upside-down. The crowd roared with delight as glitter filled the air, each person whistled and cheered for several minutes before running off to enjoy the festival.

Two figures slipped away, hidden by the massive crowds. Their opposite coloured eyes glinted briefly in the sun before they slipped beneath the dark cover of the forest. After several minutes of walking along a twisted path through the forest the figures arrived at an abandoned-looking shack. Slipping inside they reported what they had seen, “The Spring Festival has begun, the Empress also has a new bodyguard.”

Two amber eyes glinted out of the shadows, “I am already aware of this new woman, and that the festival has begun. I told you two to collect information, not state the obvious!” The figures both cringed, “But my lord,” one of them began. “Silence!! I don’t have time for your pitiful excuses! Just go back out and collect some more information, something that could be useful this time!” The figures both trembled, they then bowed pathetically before backing away, both didn’t dare raise their eyes when their master was like this.

The amber eyed figure scowled when his two minions left the room. “Fools,” he muttered to himself. He then turned slightly and set his gaze upon a square beam of light that emanated from the only remaining window. In the centre of this light lay a perfect white letter, bearing a seal in the shape of a Diamond.

((*Glares back at Ria* Well, I’m sorry Miss Too-good-to-talk-to-Simon-and-I-about-how-bad-the-book-was! Plus you did not ask for clarification! You just sat there laughing at me! That’ll teach you to laugh at me!))

Serenity
Serenity walked down the long hallway, to her bedroom. She was wearing a long, elegant dress. Serenity hated wearing dresses like that; they always seemed to make her clumsier. But she was forced to wear it, by the Royal Council. They had announced to an unsurprised Serenity that they were crowning her Queen early, but to take the position of Queen, she must first marry. They said that Tirithral had asked for her had in marriage and that her wedding was scheduled in seven days. She tried to stop them but they produced a (obviously fake) will of her parents that stated that they were her legal guardians and she must obey their will. So there was nothing she could do.
Today, the council had announced to the entire Kingdom of her engagement. Serenity was required to be present for the announcement. She turned up in her usual clothes, but was soon rushed back to her room, where an unpleased Councillor Quade had picked out her dress for the occasion.
Serenity increased the pace of her steps. She wanted to get to her room faster, away from the Royal Council and from the cold eyes of Tirithral. She would escape them one day. Someday.
She found her dress very annoying as she hurried along the hallway. It was a delicate dress that clung to her body and fell loosely to the floor in many layers, below her waist. The neckline was low and the sleeves were long, too long for her arms. They dangled past her hands. The dress was made of a light crinkly fabric that consisted of four pale colours: light blue, light pink, lavender and white.
“You look like a china doll,” Tirithral had told an angry Serenity.
Serenity paused as she heard a ripping sound. She looked down and she realised while she had been thinking of Tirithral she had put a foot through the delicate layers of her skirt.
Upon entering her room she threw open the curtains to the big window in her room that overlooked the Kingdom of Diamond. The Redball pitch caught her eye. There were a group of youths about her age immersed in a game.
Serenity hurriedly threw on a pair of light and loose brown pants, leather boots and tight brown sleeveless top that stopped just below her bust. She grabbed a long brown hooded cloak and leaped out of the window.

Evening had fallen. An already older, but still good looking women pushed aside the curtains, made out of thousands of glittering stones sewn together by different strings. Zue entered her bedroom. Everything was quiet here. No servant or any other life outside the two crows sitting on the sides of the bed, were present.

"Get off," she swung her hand at them. The birds clapped their great wings, one flying for a nearby small table, the other landing on the floor next to the bed.

Zue sighed, laying down on the bed. One bird with bright blue eyes and a white spot in the neck, shifted its head a little, "how was your day?"

"About the marriage, I am not sure, yet. But something has changed. Merle was distracted. He wouldn't talk... he was too tired."

The bird with the white spot, Ernandir, clacked its beak, producing a grizzly sound. "You mean he doesn't want your advice anymore. That's why he was too 'tired'"

Sorwardir hopped around on the table, "my brother is right. Back then, your Merle would have excuted your orders immediatly. Your order about the marriage."

Ernandir looked at his brother, "he is not doing the right thing. It will get out of control and what will happen to Topaz then? The legacy of your husband?"

"Silence!" Zue sat upright in the bed, "you two do not need to point out the obvious. I did not hire you for that. You shall simply do my bidding!"

The birds silenced. Sitting still, two gleaming eyes directed to Zue.

"My son got a letter that confused him, you," she pointed to Sorwardir, "find out what it is about."

The bird flew up, and then glided through the window.

"Guard the entrance to my rooms," she said to the other, "I need to concentrate and can have no interruption."

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Merle opened his eyes. He was laying on one of the couches in his rooms. His formal cloths he had exchanged for more casual cloths of fine silks. A few hours ago, he had also bathed and let the doctors see at his wounds. Frowning, he looked around, it was like he had felt some kind of presence.

Something that startled him and woken him up. But no one was here. He felt refreshed and quite good. So he swung his legs over the edge of the coach. Silentfull Merle got up and walked to the window.

It was evening. The air was cool, close to cold. A few moths darted around a shining candle.

When looking into the garden, he discovered the slick shape of a winged desert snake. The creatures were slightly intelligent and liked to fly from garden to garden. Or from oasis to oasis. Usually, the ones that visited the gardens, were well known to the owner of the garden.

Merle turned around with the intention of walking towards the door leading outside. He saw two things. On one of the small tables, there lay a lettre and right underneath the window, there was one black feather.

The young king didn't think much about the feather. Birds with black feathers weren't that uncommon and the winds blew things in. Yet, he took notion of the object.

While he was looking down, one frustrated bird hung hidden between the curtains above the king. Sorwardir had followed the messenger, that carried information about the mysterious letter.

The raven had found the historian, that was supposed to investigate the letter through Gardia. Gardia had yet been talking to his wife about Merle leaving all the sudden about a letter. A letter that had to be investigated by historians. At that point Gardia had laughed, not knowing anything about the letter, outside this. He also hadn't been aware of the spying bird.

So Sorwardir had flewn to the residence of the historians. Only to discover the man was going to bed and had send information to the king about the damned letter.

The raven had been about opening the information letter, when Merle had awakened. Only in some ample seconds, Sorwardir had to be able to hide himself.

The bird now saw how Merle opened the information letter. He heard Merle gasp.

Yes, you are surprised. Now leave the thing on the table so I can get my information!

"I can't get this get lost.. or be read by the wrong people," Merle said, he hesitated for a few moments, "nor a servant." Everyone knew how servants chatted. Merle trusted the historian. But..

With a quick movement, he stuck the letter in a pouch inside his overcoat. Then he moved to the garden.

The only thing Sorwardir still heard was, "what am I supposed to do..."

((I wouldn't mind taking another kingdom. Problem is, I am typing through an internet cafe and right now, I am already running out of time when typing for the rp's I am in. At latest sunday, I am back home. So after that, if there is still a kingdom free, I will type something up.))

((Umm, ok, it appears I am going nowhere. I always have some things in mind and when I type them out, they don't seem to be as good anymore. I do like the other storylines. Well done!))

[Yay, thank you both Ria and Rachel very much! :D Hello everyone, I'm the newest addition and am looking forward to role playing with you enormously.]

Primary Character Info

Name: Althea Lune

Age: 16 (to all intents and purposes, she will be passing her sixteenth birthday near the beginning of posting)

Kingdom: Zircon

Position in Kingdom: Officially called 'Lady' although her position is something like a queen.

Appearance: Like all the other people in Zircon, Althea's physical appearance is directly affected by the lack of sunlight and the limited diet available. Stunted growth, poor health and extraordinarily pale skin and facial features are all characteristic of Zirconians which Althea also possesses. Because of the relative dampness that comes with living in underwater caves, Althea's main priority in dressing is to remain cool and composed. To the unobservant eye, her clothes are similar in style to a commoner's: a loose, flowing robe with detachable sleeves made of a different, filmy material and a veil of the same translucent material over her face. Subtle changes make all the difference, though: her clothes are not made of the commoner's cotton, but of light, expensive silk; she wears the royal blue and white colours instead of bright, riotous dyes; and her veil hangs from a circlet of silver on her head that marks her to be a member of the royal family. Instead of very short hair, her own white-blond hair hangs down to her shoulders. The light of Zirconian glow-flies in the underground caves casts a silvery tinge to her hair and her blue-grey eyes. She has a really lovely smile when she smiles, but it is not often that she does so.

Personality: Life expectancy is short in Zircon, only thirty-five years, but many die before then due to constant ill health. Most children die before they reach the age of five years. Althea's world-weary eyes and facial expressions do not seem to belong to a young girl of sixteen. A compassinate, caring young person, she is fiercely dedicated to her kingdom and her people. All the troubles of the kingdom -- ill health, early deaths, lack of sunlight, poor diet -- are carried on her young shoulders and constant worrying has forced her to grow up long before her time. She spends much of her time worrying and thinking quietly about these problems and looking for solutions, so has become something of a melancholy recluse over the years. When not cocooned in a room with advisors when running the kingdom, Althea studies hard to become the best healer she can possibly be.

A gifted healer, the talent runs in the royal family and is seen as a means of serving the people. What Althea lacks in skill taught by experience and learning, she makes up for in natural talent and intuition. What little time she spends away from the palace and her studies is spent with the sick and dying. Her work with the sick has taught her to be patient and gentle. Being needed and being able to help makes her feel better about herself; she feels guilty about not being able to solve all of Zircon's problems, even though they are beyond anyone's power. Whenever she catches herself thinking selfishly, Althea feels guilty and overexerts herself in the care of her kingdom as a self-punishment for forgetting her people. As a result, she is unable to express her own emotions and finds it difficult to confide in anyone.

History: Long ago, Zircon was an island on the surface of the sea. No one knows exactly when the island began to sink because the movement was so miniscule, but by the time someone noticed it, the island had begun its slow and sure descent below the ocean. The wisest sages of the kingdom did not know why the island was sinking and nothing anyone could do would stop it from drowning itself. Eventually, they gave up and tried to find another way of surviving. None of the other kingdoms were able to accomodate all the Zirconian refugees and it seemed that they were doomed to die. That was, until the Lord of the Island (as the ruler was called back then) discovered the underground caves. That was when a flicker of hope was lit for Zircon.

Slowly, people migrated to the underground caves. People learned to set traps underwater for seafood and breed land animals as best as they could. They learned to make dishes out of seaweed, their only vegetation. They distilled salt water using what little fuel they could invent and they chopped down all the trees above the surface for emergency storage. Springs were opened and underwater lakes were formed, providing fresh water. Glow-flies were bred to provide light. By and by, it seemed the Zirconians would continue to survive.

Time passed and the Lord who had discovered the caves had passed on the throne to his daughter, Althea's mother. (Rulers of the Island were usually women; the Lord of the Island had been an exception.) Althea's mother had three children but only Althea survived babyhood and continued to grow up. Althea's father drowned when she was six.

While the island was sinking, pathways up to the surface were still available. People often came up for sunlight while they could. With time, the pathways became ever more treacherous and dangerous as water leaked in. Eventually it was decreed that the people had to obtain special permission to go up with experts, for fear they would slip and fall. As time passed, even that was not possible and only the court advisors continued going up to assess their danger. Ten years ago, Althea's father was among those who made the last journey to the surface -- and found that there was no surface anymore, only ocean. The island had sunk and Althea's father had been washed away and drowned.

Althea's mother never quite recovered from his death. Her grief and the new worries about having no sunlight whatsoever, not to mention running out of water and fuel and all the previous troubles about her people's health, combined to cause an early death four years later when she was only twenty-eight. Althea began to rule the country at ten with the help of all her advisors (who did most of the actual ruling while she learned the ropes). Her actual crowning ceremony as Queen of Zircon is expected to take place on her sixteenth birthday.

When Althea is crowned, Zircon's worries will officially be hers to look after. This is not much, though, seeing as she has been unofficially worrying over them for six years. A new concern is that her only means of contact with the other kingdoms is too dangerous to continue much longer. At the moment she is sending expert divers to swim up towards the surface of the ocean. They are beginning to run out of oxygen before they reach the surface and she does not want to risk any lives, but she is at a loss for what she will do when this means of contact is gone.

News: Althea's sixteenth birthday is about to be celebrated by the kingdom. On this day she will officially become the Lady and Queen of Zircon (which she has been in action, if not in name, so far).

Secondary Character Info

Name: Devlin "Dev" Keith

Age: 17

Kingdom: Zircon

Position in Kingdom: Youngest diver, recently had an accident returning to Zircon. He ran out of breath as the island had sunk further since the last trip and began drowning. The Lady Althea saved his life.

Appearance: A youth on the brink of manhood, physically well-developed (necessary for a diver) surprisingly tall for his age by Zircon standards (although he would be average height in other kingdoms). Brown hair and deep brown eyes, he prefers to wear brown clothes as the dye is more common than other colours, thus more affordable.

Personality: He's usually easygoing and chats quite comfortably so has positive relationships with the other divers. However, he doesn't like to talk about himself and will shut up like a clam on some topics. Superficial conversations are all very well, but Dev doesn't let anyone know the deeper part of himself. If anyone ever thought about it, they would realise that no one really knows Dev, but no one has thought about this. Dev is surprisingly stubborn about certain things and refuses to change his mind once he has taken a position. A lot of the time he won't give his reasons for why he does something but he certainly has them.
Weapons: Dev is no mean hand at wielding a lightweight sword and he always keeps a dagger close by him.

History: Dev has no family that he knows of and was raised by the community, as are many orphaned children. Not many people know much about Dev's parents, who were also the silent type. They died when he was five and people suppose that he has forgotten what his parents are like. That is true for the most part but he has a few secret memories he guards jealously and never mentions. Surprisingly fit for a Zircon boy, he began training to be a diver when he reached his teens. He has been on a couple of trips to the surface already so has a little experience. When he is not going on a diving trip, he lives in a community centre with other people who have nowhere to go. Having no parents to make proud, he works hard for his kingdom instead, and has a degree of respect for Lady Althea, who has managed to govern Zircon quite well at a tender age. He had never seen her in person, though. When she saved his life, he had not known it was her until much later and was only amazed that she had taken the trouble to heal him. Dev has heard tales of Althea's kindness before, but never witnessing them first-hand, had doubts as to how much she actually did. Now the respect has grown larger and into something more akin to worship.

Kingdom Info

Government Type: A cross between a democracy and a monarchy. The royal family rules the kingdom, but the people ultimately decide who their ruler will be. They have the right to choose another member of the royal family to replace a corrupt one (only if the ruler is not doing right by the people, otherwise it is something of a sin to overthrow a good ruler) and the right to choose who will rule when the Lord or Lady retires or dies. During a peaceful reign, voting is usually a matter of whether the ruler should be replaced or not. Thus they are both Lord and King/Lady and Queen of Zircon and people address them as the former.

For example, Althea's grandmother was the original Lady and Queen of the Island but she died prematurely. The people voted for her husband to take over as they thought his children were too young to rule, even with the help of court advisors. That was how Althea's grandfather became Lord of the Island.

When Althea's mother died, leaving Althea as the only member of the royal family alive, there was a buzz about what was to be done. Most felt that Althea was too young to handle a whole kingdom on her own, but no one was sure of who would rule instead. This situation had never come up before. It seemed wrong to remove the royal family from the throne since Althea hadn't actually done anything bad. At last it was decided that Althea was on probation; she had five years to prove herself of becoming a worthy potential ruler before the people decided to do anything else. Althea did reasonably well and when she was fifteen, it was voted that Althea could be crowned the following year as the official ruler.

Cultural Info: Light is provided by glow-flies especially bred and hung in lanterns around the city on the walls. They produce a dim silvery light that casts a strange glow on everything, but it does soften people's features and make them look prettier. This much is important, seeing how most are sickly individuals and show it. Healing has become a necessary skill to survive, which is what makes Zirconians such good healers. Day and night are really "waking hours" and "sleeping hours" to Zircon, having no sun or moon or stars to go by, and only glow-flies which shine all the time.

Wood, coal and oil are precious resources carefully hoarded and guarded jealously by the royal family. They do not permit anyone to use it unless in absolute emergencies as they fear the day there will be no more fuel. Most people make do with animal excrement if they make any fire at all.

Most people are fishermen or cultivators of seaweed. Many people search for other sources of food. Diet consists mainly of cold fish, seaweed and water. The richer ones may be lucky enough to have chickens, goats or cows. These animals have not thrived well in underwater conditions and are scrawny beasts. Milk has a taste of the sea in it and eggs are soft, watery excuses but they are better than the plain diet.

Money is not used as a currency in this kingdom; more an exotic thing of the past. People rely on themselves for food and those who cannot are provided for, as the law states. It would be impossible to survive if people only took care of themselves and did not help each other here. Wealth is more a measure of how well someone can survive: their diet, their animals, the cleanliness and area of their homes. Those who have old antiques from the past when they lived on land are generally the old ones who grew up on land as children and came down here later. They hope they can live on land again someday. The first-generation to be born in the underwater caves, Althea's generation, have little concern for the past and worry about how to live underwater instead.

In such a gloomy atmosphere, it is important to find ways of being cheerful. People dye their clothes using the earth and other materials they have found: red, purple, yellow, orange, brown, green -- any colours they can find, perhaps mixtures of these. Blue is worn by court advisors and nobles, as blue and white are the royal colours. Althea wears white as befits the Lady and trimmings of blue are worn on special occasions. No one wears black as it is so miserable in this dark world, and grey appears silver under the light of the glow-flies. Silver is considered something of an unofficial royal colour as the circlet the monarch wears is made of silver. Besides, it would seem too miserable. Clothes are made of cotton, but as they are now finding it more and more difficult to contact the outside world, people are having to make do with old clothes. Advisors and experts are racking their brains for another material.

Once a week, every able person takes hold of a glow-fly lantern and parades the city streets with it into the largest cave of all, which was made to accomodate five thousand, where there is a dance by the light of the glow-flies. On the Lady's birthday, coloured coral and other bright, underwater objects are strewn all over the city streets and she makes a speech, which is followed by a night of dancing. On this day everyone has enough to satisfy their hunger (although still not enough to over-indulge) for one meal. Zircon can only afford a feast once a year.

Books are precious items of knowledge kept in a special library but are decaying fast in these bad conditions. Scribes are currently copying out the ones deteriorating quickest on crab-shells, coral and anything else they can lay their hands on, including cave walls. Teaching is mostly done orally and by example. Afraid of losing knowledge, Zirconian adults stuff as much as they can into children. A carefree childhood ends around the time one is three, which is schooling age.

Architecture/City Appearance: Zircon is a complex network of underground caves, some natural and others hollowed out by the previous Lord of the Island. They were linked together and different areas consititute different quarters of the city: living quarters, medical quarters, fishing quarters and so on and so forth. Caves make up people's homes with passageways being the alleys, streets and roads. The richer people have smaller, inner caves in their homes. Doors are either small boulders that can be rolled away or just open doorways. Not many people live in Zircon; Althea rules over a diminishing population of about a thousand.

Overall Zircon cannot be called rich. The people do their best to stay clean and keep their city clean, but there is only so much that people can do. Living in damp, underwater caves is really not a healthy arrangement in the first place, and many diseases are brought about by the bad living conditions.

Main Palace/Castle: The "palace" consists of a large cave with a few inner caves behind it. One is a room where Althea cocoons herself up with advisors discussing different problems, another is her bedroom and the third has been converted from her parents' bedroom to a place of study. The main entrance hall is a place to receive people and serves as a spare place for the sick and dying should there be a mass disease or plague. A young cook and a maid come to help cook and clean for the Lady everyday but they have their own home to go to. A guard or two may stand watch at night outside "the Lady's abode", as it is known throughout Zircon, but otherwise Althea lives on her own.

Demon Info

Name: Kraka

Appearance: An enormous, slimy dark mass of green, brown, black and general vomit colour, Kraka has twelve eyes and tentacle-like limbs. There are protruding spikes or horns around its body as well and it carries a massive stink about it (absolutely phewy). No human has actually seen Kraka and the name is unknown throughout the Zirconian library. The problem is, Kraka and its kind all differ in appearance but are all immensely ugly. Being the ugliest, smelliest creature of all, Kraka is naturally the leader.

Personality: Kraka is probably slightly demented, as befits all proper demons. He (for lack of a better pronoun -- "it" can get rather impersonal after a while; Kraka probably has no gender as we know it) has a serious problem when it comes to what he considers his territory: the whole ocean is his, in his opinion. Of course, a whole ocean is a rather large amount of water to try and terrorise (he is a regular tyrant who likes gruesome things and is determined to feast upon every other sea creature) so he can't really be bothered to control any more than the deepest, darkest depths where he resides. The deepest, darkest depths are the gloomiest, murkiest depths ever, just like his personality. If anything so much as touch the borders of the depths (which is pretty hard to measure -- where are the borders anyway?), he gets into a right royal fit of passion and the poor victim meets a sticky end. Violent demon, this is.

Abilities: Apart from thinking out the most violent things possible? Kraka's also very good at casting out a black smog that hangs in air and water, suffocating anything that is not his personal minion. His body odour alone would probably suffocate most normal beings, come to that.

History: Kraka has been dwelling peacefully (as peacefully as a sadistic demon that likes to kill can live) in his murky waters, venturing out only occasionally to terrorise innocent sea creatures outside his main home. That all ended when the island of Zircon began to sink. The island was unfortunately positioned above the deepest, darkest depths of the ocean and right above Kraka's home too, if you so please. He was absolutely furious when it began to sink. Nothing he could do would push it back up, although he tried. Oh yes, he tried. He just made it sink faster, though. Now it is intruding on his territory and is coming down even further, which makes him very angry indeed. He's never done anything yet to the people inside the caves, so the people don't know about him, but he's determined to take more drastic action now. He's going to break that island into little pieces and eat all its occupants up if it's the last thing he ever does.

Besides, he's been wanting a change in his diet for a while now.

Minions: Kraka has many Karpans to obey his every whim. The ugliest species to have ever walked the ocean floor, none of them can quite match Kraka in ugliness, though. They differ in appearance but are all rather gloopy, disgusting creatures. Perhaps the only similar feature amongst the Karpans is their lack of beauty. All enjoy doing evil, which they see as a kind of sport and are more than happy to do whatever Kraka says, as whatever he says is rather nasty. Apart from their ability to do violence without any limits, they aren't capable of doing much else.

Note: And of course, how could I forget -Diamond Dust-?

---

Gasping, Althea lifted her head out of the water and looked at the time. Two minutes and forty-five seconds. It simply wasn't good enough! Releasing a sound of exasparation and frustration, she slid to the floor and lay weakly on her side, too tired to move. Her shoulders shook with each ragged breath and it took a long time before she breathed a little easier. Even when she had returned to normal, though, she didn't move. She continued to lie on her side, looking at the clockwork watch she was holding.

The watch was an heirloom from her father, a relic of better days on land. Althea rarely used it to preserve it as long as possible, but even so, the watch's days were limited in these damp conditions. As were Zircon's days if Althea did not find a solution to their problems. Her grip around it tightened at the thought.

Nobody seemed to notice it, but the Lady was very frightened of the days to come. In fact, Althea was absolutely terrified. What was she going to do? The question haunted her every waking moment and terrible nightmares haunting her while she slept, but she had no answer. She had had no answer as a princess and tomorrow, when she would be crowned queen, she still would have no answer.

"Lady Althea?" a quavering voice echoed through the caves. Althea groaned and pushed herself up from the cold stone floor. The maid, Yoanne, was evidently looking for her. "Lady Althea?" she called again, hearing the groan.

"I am in my room, Yoanne. Please wait a while!" Althea rubbed her wet hair vigorously and put the watch away. She decided to leave the water for later; it wasn't too dirty and she could not bear to waste it. One day there would be no more water ... She sighed and left her room.

Yoanne was in the main entrance cave with the head of the guards beside her, looking distraught. Althea stood up a little straighter as she approached them. He must have important news. She fretted silently about what new calamity might have befallen them. The guard bowed and the maid curtsied.

"Forgive me, my Lady," the guard began immediately, without waiting for her to give him permission to speak. "The divers are back from land and, and one is in need of your, your help." He stopped, looking helplessly at the sixteen year old girl. Althea's eyes widened in horror. Without wasting a moment longer, she walked straight out of the room with both Yoanne and the head guard at her heels. To think that she had been drying her hair when someone might be dying!

"Where is he?"

"By the ocean, we daren't move him."

"What happened?" she demanded as they made in that direction at a rapid pace.

"The island has sunk some more. He couldn't hold his breath in any longer on the way back and lost it. Someone saw him begin to drown and the others brought him to shore." Althea said nothing to this but walked faster, pressing her lips together in a thin, hard line.

The trio had been taking several shortcuts through an intricate maze of alleys and passageways usually abandoned by most people. A few late night walkers bowed when they saw the Lady, but otherwise they met no one else. As they progressed further, the lanterns were hanging with greater and greater distances between them and the air was getting even more humid. A salty tang became quite distinctive.

[It's getting late and I'm dreadfully sleepy. I don't think I'm writing very coherently now, so I'll add more tomorrow morning or something...]

Emra slipped out of the water and transformed, a white silk robe flowed around her. She walked up the steps to within her chambers, and prepared to write.

Dear Crown Princess Serenity Tehsume,

I appreciate your letter, and I speak from my heart. I will help protect my kingdom, and all the others as much as I can. I would also like to meet with you, to dicuss this matter in depth- for it is in such great importance.

Please reply in haste, and I thank you very much for the warning.

Sincerely,

Queen Emra Raeli

Emra packaged the letter, taking a deep breath. She gave it to one of the nightime mail carriers she had called, and he took it away, far away. She wondered if the highest ranking officer of the mail could find this kingdom, or whether it would find him. She hoped it would, and decided to retire for the evening.
((I'm very sorry, short post- I'm still tired....hope the letter is all okey dokey))

Location: The small corner of my mind where dreams are made...
Serenity
Serenity strode onto the pitch. She kept her face hidden in her hood, lest anyone discover her.
“May I join?” she asked, confidently.
“But…you’re just a weak girl!” a small and scrawny boy exclaimed. A girl with pale red hair and freckles punched him in the ribs. He doubled over painfully, “I mean, girls don’t usually want to play with us,” he looked over at the redheaded girl to make sure what he said was acceptable. She nodded with approval at him.
“My name is Shaul, and this is my friend, Lilo. Those two boys over there are Natem and Hukla. We were just playing a small game, nothing serious. We’ll have to alternate otherwise the teams would not be equal,” he continued.
Serenity nodded, “Fine with me!”
“What’s your name?”
“Er, Istariel”
Suddenly someone came up behind Serenity and pushed her into a puddle of mud.
“Onama!” Lilo shouted, angrily, helping Serenity up, “Don’t be so mean! You must apologise to Istariel!”
Serenity turned to face the boy who had pushed her over, Onama. She gasped. Onama was twice her size, and height. Behind him were four other boys of the same build and they all wore the same menacing smile on their faces.
“Squeamish little thing, ain’t she? I don’t like her.” Onama decided.
Shaul bravely stepped beside Lilo, “Leave her alone,”
Onama bent over so that he was facing Shaul face-to-face, “ You sticking up for this squeamish mouse and your friend? Lilo the freckle face?”
Lilo went pink. Shaul drew himself up so that he nearly reached Onama’s height.
“S, say that again…..and you’ll regret it!” he cried.
“Oh yes, I forgot that little Shaul and Lilo were in love!” Onama smirked.
Shaul growled.
Onama glared down at Shaul. Serenity gasped. They weren’t really going to fight…right?
Wrong. Onama raised his fist. Shaul gulped.
“Wait!” shouted Serenity. Everyone stared at her, “Onama, I challenge you to a Redball match!”
A strangled cry escaped Natem’s throat. He leaned over to Serenity and whispered in her ear, “What are you thinking? These people are twice the size of us!”
“It is often speed and agility that prevails over size and strength in Redball,” Serenity whispered back, confidently.
Shaul thought about it for a moment, “Yes…yes, I agree. Do you accept our challenge?”
Onama looked at Shaul like he was crazy. Then he threw back his head and laughed, “Of course I agree! I never miss a chance to put brats like you in their place,”
“We will meet back here in ten minutes,” nodded Shaul.
The four children and Serenity hurried off the pitch together.
“What were you thinking? Challenging Onama and his team to a game of Redball. They’re the Champions, you know!” Lilo growled at Serenity once they were out of earshot of the other team.
“I, I didn’t know!” stammered Serenity.
“How can you not know? Where have you been living for the past two years?” Hakla demanded.
Serenity looked down at her feet, “I…,”
“- Leave it. Right now we have to focus on the match. We can win,” Shaul cut in.
“Is that why you accepted? Or is it because you want to prove that you’re a man?” hissed Lilo.
Shaul blushed and shut his mouth.
“I…I’m sorry I got us into this. But we can’t back out now. We have to keep going,”
Lilo sighed, “I know,”
“You better be a good Redball player,” grumbled Natem, “Because we aren’t,”
“Er,” said Serenity who had never played a game of Redball in her life.
“Ten minutes are up! Come out here so we can finish this off fast!” Onama called from the middle of the pitch. He was holding a redball.
“Lets go,” said Shaul grimly.
They all filed out into the middle of the pitch. The stood in a circle, Onama and Shaul in the middle. They all unfolded their wings, ready. Onama smirked at Shaul and let the ball go. It burst into crimson flames and the Onama and Shaul flew after it, after the ball extinguished itself and fell back towards the ground. The game had begun.
Serenity propelled herself into the air and glanced at the other end of the pitch. There, was the opposing team’s goal hoop.
“Istariel!” shouted Hukla as something hard bounced off Serenity’s head. Surprised, she realised that it was the ball! She hurtled after it and caught it before it hit the ground. Then she flew towards the enemy hoops as fast as she could. She flew into something, hard. It was Natem.
“What are you doing?” she yelled angrily.
“This is our hoop. You need to put that ball through the one on the other side of the field. Pay attention,” he said, taking the ball off her and flying away.
Serenity hovered next to the hoop for a moment, blushing. Then she remembered that she was needed in the game. She flew after the ball.
She lost her enthusiasm when she realised that she wasn’t a good Redball player. She floated around the pitch aimlessly. She watched the others to see how they were moving their bodies. What was their secret? They twisted their waists, stretched their legs and folded their wings to make sharp turns.
“Heads!” called Shaul as the ball flew towards Serenity, yet again. She shielded her face with her hands and shrieked. The ball bounced harmlessly off her arms. Then she heard cheering. She slowly lowered her arms to see what had happened. Her team was laughing and dancing in the air, hugging each other.
With a start Serenity realised what had happened. The ball had bounced off her and into the enemy hoop! She had scored the winning goal!
Lilo flew over to Serenity and hugged her, “How did you do that?” Lilo exclaimed with wonder, “You weren’t even looking!”
“Just pure skill, I suppose,” smiled Serenity sheepishly.
Meanwhile, Onama was brooding by his team’s hoop. He saw on the ground that the ball was flashing red, changing to it’s most dangerous state. It was lucky for the other team that the ball hadn’t changed red in the game, if it would’ve Onama and his friends would’ve had the brats out of the sky in a second. The ball was still safe to hold while it was flashing, but when it tuned red…
Onama soared down towards the flashing ball, picked it up and pelted the ball at Serenity, which had now turned red.
Natem saw the ball coming. He flew up to Serenity and pushed her out of the way of the poisoned ball. They hurtled towards the ground. Natem pulled out of the decent but Serenity hit the ground. He flew down to her, worried.
“Are you okay, Istariel?” he asked the sprawled figure. Everyone gathered around them.
Serenity groaned and sat up. As she did, her hood fell off, revealing her well-known face and her diamond tiara. Everyone gasped.
Onama strode up, laughing, “What’s the matter, did I mangle that little brat’s face or something?”
He looked down at Serenity, screamed and ran off. His friends followed close behind him after catching a glimpse of the princess’s face.
Shaul kneeled before her, trembling, “We’re all very sorry, Princess. Please…please don’t kill us!”
Serenity opened her mouth to tell them that she would never think of such a thing, but they had already run away, in fright.
Serenity stood up and viewed the empty Redball pitch. The setting sun hitting the pitch was turning the usually white pitch into many different colours. It was beautiful. And there was no one here to share it with her.
“What’s the good of being Queen of Diamond if I’m so alone?” she asked the many-coloured sky, tears streaming down her face.

They entered a large, salt-sprayed cave that opened out towards the ocean. The cave opening ended and a large crop of flat rock stretched before them. Surrounding the stretch of rock was the ink-black sea. All around was an empty feeling and the silent roar of the waves.

The end of the rock was submerged by sea and this was where Althea's divers went in. They would swim along some tunnels to get out of the island and enter the ocean itself. Near the edge of the rock was a small huddle of lithe young divers still in their wetsuits. One was holding the injured diver's head in his lap.

Althea broke into a run and crouched down beside the diver. Someone lifted a lantern for her and she examined his face. It was a boy who could not be much older than herself, a boy with brown hair and a frighteningly pale face. It seemed to be turning blue.

She put one hand on his heart and another on his forehead. Closing her eyes, she concentrated.

She was entering a dark place. There was no light anywhere. Where are you? she called. The faintest glimmer of light appeared and then disappeared again. Slowly making her way towards where she thought she saw it, she called again.

Where are you?

She heard his pulse quicken. Where are you? she called again. I can't see you. The light appeared again, a faint one, but growing stronger bit by bit. As she got closer, she saw the outline of the boy's face, his brown eyes large with wonder.

Who are you?

She smiled one of her rare smiles and held out her hand towards him. I am the one who will bring you home. Silently, the boy took it and the light became a glorious white that surrounded them.

The boy opened his eyes to find the Lady looking at him in concern. When she saw he was awake, she sighed in relief. The boy tried to sit up in his astonishment, and only succeeded in vomiting out sea water. When he was done, he felt much better -- until he realized he had dirtied the Lady's robe.

"I'm sorry!" he gasped with some difficulty. Althea stopped him. "Do not worry," she said gently. "This is a small matter compared to your being well. Do not talk for now or you will hurt yourself." She smiled again and he quietened, although he stared at her.

Rising, Althea motioned for the lead diver to come with her. "He is recovered now but he must go to the hospital to be on the safe side," she added, indicating the boy who continued to look in her direction after she had gone.

---

"What news?" Althea asked after she had changed out of her robe and into a clean one.

The lead diver's face boded grim news. "The island has sunk further," he began. "That is why Devlin, the boy you saved, could not hold onto his breath any longer. We are afraid that ... " He stopped, struggling to find the words.

Althea sighed deeply and stared off into space, fiddling with the folds of her robe. She knew perfectly well what the lead diver wished to say and she knew that he was right. If she had not come in time, the boy would have died. It was fortunate he had not suffered more; as it was, she had had to reach deep down before she could find him and was exhausted. All the same ... what would they do in the days to come? Always the same question. Never an answer.

"I have a letter," he said abruptly. Althea started. A letter? It had been years since they had received an actual letter. Most kingdoms preferred to give news orally. He produced a slightly damp letter from the inside of his wetsuit. She thanked him and observed the seal. A diamond? She broke it and shook the letter open.

For quite a long time, there was silence. At last, she murmured, "Who gave this to you?"

"A tall, fair-haired man told me this was addressed to you from his princess. I don't know what kingdom he was from as he didn't say and he didn't look like anyone I'd ever seen before." There was another long, dragged out silence. The diver shifted uneasily. Why didn't the Lady say anything?

"I am afraid to disappoint you, Thoral," she said suddenly, turning back to her lead diver. He was shocked and made a move to say something but she cut him off and went on, "It will be hard for you, I think, but I will do my best to help you and all the others find work." She looked outside the cave entrance. The boulder door had been rolled away. "There will be no more expeditions up to the surface."

Thoral, relieved and saddened, did not know whether to thank her or beg for forgiveness, so tried to do both and confused himself. Not hearing him, Althea went on absentmindedly, "However ... " He stopped and looked at her.

"However, I may want just one other trip," she smiled sadly. "After that, I promise I will ask no more of you. But that last trip ... it is important to me." Thoral bowed deeply.

"I will do all you say, my Lady."

Althea smiled. Thoral did not know it yet, but the Lady was going to be going on the next trip up to the surface, something she had never done before -- something she might, perhaps, not survive.

Crickets shirped cheerfully, all around, one even very close to his feet. It silenced when Merle got too close. As soon as the youngster stepped further the cricket continued its song.

A winged desert snake, a species that origined from Topaz, but travelled across all lands during summer. Desert snakes had long brown or yellow bodies, with feathery wings. The colours of the wings ranged from blue, yellow or pink; topazian colours.

This serpent had blue wings, that shone slightly in the moonlight when it moved.

"Hello"

The snake moved its head away from the large flowers it had been feeding upon. One slitted eye looked at Merle. The snakes weren't as intelligent as humans, but neverthless quite intelligent.

However, they conversed with thoughts and emotions, not with speak.

Interesting time, excited the snake thought, tired too. Not very good.

Indeed... Merle thought. With 'not very good' the snake meant sick.

What paper? Diamond? Diamond?

Merle was surprised the beast knew the name of the.. legendary kingdom. He knew this snake, it had visited this garden since he had been a little boy. Usually, the snakes weren't very trusting, and it costed some time to be able to converse.

Do you know Diamond?

But the snake only kirred and resumed feeding with her long tongue.

He touched the pocket inside his overcoat, which contained the letter. Enclosed in it was the seal, weighing down his pocket.

...I researched all matter on this seal and its kingdom. As far as I can see, it seems very real, your majesty...

I wish I would know how to reach their princess.. Maybe I could do something to help her too.

Of course, he could not. Firstly, he didn't knew how to reach Diamond. Secondly, he couldn't just run off.. But, could he dismiss the letter? He had no choice, he had to bring it forward at the council tomorrow. Tomorrow... he would have to visit a few towns and camps alongside the ocean that bordered against the desert wastes of Topaz.

Merle turned around, walking back to his room.

The snake looked up, watching at the dissappearing figure.

Diamond

An important senate meeting was being held. Thisa only knew that the reason the senators called for such an urgent meeting was to discuss the letter they recieved. Apparantly there was something odd about it. As soon as she took her seat in the middle of the circular room (the senators lined the circumference), the meeting began.

The same senator that met her in the keep, Besthif Sirius, began the discussion.

"As you all know, during our usual meeting at dawn, a bird flew into one of the windows carrying this letter." He pointed at an envelope on a table near Thisa. "This letter warning us of a danger to our lands, came from a world which only exists in legend, but we now believe it to merely be hidden."

He held up the letter, which caused the council to murmur. It clearly had the mark of Diamond on it.

"Now, if this kingdom truely exists somewhere, why have they waited until now to reveal themselves?" asked Thisa.

"We're not sure. We only know that the issue they wrote to us about must have worried them."

One of the other senators seemed disgruntled.
"But...how can we contact them? We don't know where they are!"

Besthif turned to look at her. "Perhaps the bird that sent the letter remembers the location, and can send back our reply." He gestured to a white bird perched on a chair off to the side. He turned back to Thisa.

"My lady, since you are our chancellor, we decided it would be best for you to write the letter." While he said this, a few senators got up to give Thisa writing materials.

Thisa concentrated. How was she supposed to reply? There was a possibility that the kingdom may not even exist, so the whole situation felt foolish. She began writing:

Princess of Diamond,

I recieved our message, however my people are unsure of your truthfulness. If you could send a representative to us, you will gain our trust, and both of us shall discuss this issue further. In the mean time, we shall prepare our defenses.

Signed by Chancellor Thisa Polaris of Aquamarine

She sealed the envelope, and gave it to the bird. The bird, seeming to know its task without being told, took of through the window and into the clouds. Thisa watched it leave, and muttered to herself.

"Now, let us hope it gets there..."

King Anka looked upon his kingdom, from his bedroom bacony, glittering in what little light there was. He sighed. He had so much on his mind. The legendery people of the Diamond... were they real? Was Induisha really planning an attack or was this just a stupid joke?

The Fairy Tales he had been brought up with were about the people of Diamond and where they'd disapeared to. The most popular story was that they had made a home in space on the moon.

Could the message actually come from the moon?

He shook his head.
'Of course it didn't. Don't be stupid. How would the breathe?' he thought.

He re-read the letter and looked back over the seal. I looked real enough.

He went back into his bedroom and sat on his huge bed. With his head in his hands He thought it over.
It was 2 am and his wife, the Queen, woke with a start to find her husband awake.

"Anka. Why're you still awake?" she said groggily.
"I have things to think about Bella." he replied.
"No Anka, you have things to think about in the morning. You have to sleep now."
"You can never take no for an answer can you?"
"It's why you love me. Now get in bed and go to sleep."

He smiled and shook his head at her.

With a heavy heart Anka got into his bed and snuggled up to his wife.

However, the king did not have a very good nights sleep...

The people of Zircon jostled each other to see better. Bits of coral were being trampled into tinier, coloured pieces. Lanterns were strewn across the top of the caves, lighting the way for the Lady and Princess, soon to be crowned Queen. She had not yet made an appearance and her people were getting impatient.

Althea could hear the sounds of the crowds leading from her very doorway all the way down to the great hall, the largest cave of all, also known as the town centre. She closed her eyes briefly to summon courage, then gulped. Everything will be alright, she tried to reassure herself. Truthfully, she had a fear of being the spotlight. Now just about everyone in her kingdom had come to watch her become queen and she couldn't help but feel stage fright.

Yoanne patted her. "You look lovely, my Lady," she admired her handiwork. Yoanne had personally dressed Althea in a robe of thick, flowing white silk. It was actually quite warm and would have been a bit too warm, if Althea hadn't been shivering with fright. As it was, the girl was grateful for the thick silk. The hem and sleeves were decorated with beautiful silver embroidery depicting strange symbols that only Althea could read. These symbols were known only to the royal family and were charms of long life, good health and protection. They were also a reminder of where the zircon was hidden. Althea smiled a secret smile and took comfort from all her previous ancestors.

When Althea made her way down the path towards the coronation area in the centre of town, she found it was not so bad after all. Her people were cheering for her. They are my responsibility, she remembered, and held her head higher, her loose hair flowing back.

In the centre of town, they crowned her with a circlet of silver, finely worked and wrought by the hands of ingenius craftsmen many generations again. It was rumoured that dwarves had partaken in its creation. Tiny gemstones fashioned to look like zircons gleamed, with the largest one set in the circlet the brightest of all.

And now, she thought, I am Queen and they can't argue with me as much as before. She smiled as she waved to her citizens. This was going to be important. She had slept on the idea of going up to the surface and now she was more sure than ever that she must.

---

That same afternoon, an old man shook his sleeves in frustration. "The coronation has gone to your head, my Lady!" he cried out. "Forgive me for speaking frankly, but as your old friend and tutor, this is an unthinkable idea! It is insane! How can you manage attempting to go up to the surface when the best divers can no longer do it with ease? Can you hold your breath for five minutes?"

"Three minutes and twenty seconds," she said quietly.

He paused his sleeve-shaking. "I beg your pardon, my Lady?"

"Three minutes and twenty seconds," Althea repeated gently, a small smile twitching at her face. "I can hold my breath for three minutes and twenty seconds. So in answer to your question, I cannot hold my breath for five minutes yet, but I can hold it for three minutes and twenty seconds. Maybe with more practice I will be able to manage five minutes." She beamed at her old tutor. "I could only manage two minutes and twenty seconds before, but desperation must have helped. Yesterday evening I practised for hours and I finally got to three minutes and twenty seconds. I -- "

"My Lady!" her tutor exclaimed, horrified. "What on earth are you talking about?"

"I told you, I've been practising," Althea repeated patiently. Honestly, the old man took such a long time to catch onto new concepts sometimes. "I've been practising how to hold my breath for weeks now. I thought it might come in handy to learn. I couldn't manage a lot at first but maybe that was because I didn't want it enough. You often say that the moment I truly commit myself is the moment I will make great leaps and bounds. You're very right, too. I've been progressing a lot faster."

Her tutor stared at her, astounded. He was too shocked to speak. "Y-you've been planning this for a while, haven't you?" he insisted. "Admit it, you have!"

"Yes, I have," said Althea. "I didn't know what we would do when the divers wouldn't get up to the surface anymore. I didn't think it would be so soon, but I practised just in case I might want to go up to the surface myself. Now a reason has come." She quietly explained about the letter from the Kingdom of Diamond. His reaction was predictable.

"That is absurd, my Lady!" he insisted. "It is a forgery. It is something evil to distract your mind from our kingdom. It is -- "

"It is a letter that shows there may be a chance of surviving yet," Althea said calmly. "If it is true, I must save my kingdom from being destroyed. If it is not, I can find out where it came from. At any rate, the other kingdoms may take our pleas for help more seriously if the ruler meets them face to face." She stroked her father's watch tenderly.

"We're running out of time," she whispered. "I need to go up there myself."
