I have a shirt, with what I think is chinese letters on it. It says that it means love, but DOES it really? Since PPT contains many different people, can anyone see if this really means love and what language its in. Thanks. http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y216/M ... 010011.jpg

It's the Japanese character for love. If you were wondering, it's pronounced 'ai' ^^ Pretty shirt, BTW :D

Yup, that's kanji, and it does mean love. Heh, I have that one stenciled on my wall. That'd be terrible if it didn't say 'love.' I have a shirt that supposidly says "anime freak" but really says "remainder law" or something like that.

Just in case you're interested in the steps of how to write it. ;)

It's really not as scary as it looks...Although other kanji are. >_< Ugh, I need to start practicing my kanji again. I'm to the point where I'm forgetting the absolute easiest ones since I haven't used them in years.

I spent about 20 minutes trying with my tongue out and eyes crossed - the whole nine yards.

I put it up on my office door, and this girl Jackie takes one look at it, smacks me, and calls me a pervert.

Second time this week.

The 2-15 stroke stuff is easy....It's when you get into the 18+ range that it gets irritating.

愛 = love in Chinese and pronounced "ai" (Mandarin) as well.

But judging by the picture...there seems to be a extra stroke, which probably means it's something in Japanese. Either that, or someone tried imitating the word but failed.

Cause what's up there is a mix of the word "love" and the word "left" (友). O_o

(Hopefully you guys won't see squares instead of words. :P)

Oh definitely. I received my minor in Japanese at university. At one point I did know about 100-200 kanji (writing) and could read around 300-400, but now I'm scratching my head trying to remember how to write "ko". It's sad. I can't remember what kanji it was, but I do remember the first time the class got into the 20-strokers. Blank stares all around. At least from me, as I can bearly write my name in English legibly. ^_-

And Yoshi, I can see the characters, but then again, I use global ime.

Yea they wrote it wrong, I think (the bottom part). In cantonese it's pronounced more like "oi" instead of ai.

But doesn't that 友 mean friendship instead of left? Maybe my chinese's just bad. XD

爱 is indeed ai/love in both Japanese and Chinese.

However, the Chinese 右 (in pinyin "you", fourth sound,) is the one that means "left". 友 (in pinyin also "you" but in the third sound,) comes with 朋友 to make "friend."

Hope that cleared things up ... ;)

Whoops, wasn't thinking (that's for trying to do French homework while posting in two other different languages). :P Looks like I can't even tell left and right anymore. XD

I write a full sentence in 3 seconds, with normal Western letters. :P

I think my sister has that tattooed on her back, but I don't think it's Kanji. Actually, the whole phrase she has on her back is "Worthy of Love", which is what her name (Amanda) means.

Good thing she didn't do her middle name, because that means bitter. xP
