I have been wanting a certain hairstyle for a long time now. My mom told me the other night she was scheduling us haircut appointments, and I asked her if I could get my hair cut a different way and she said no. We ended up having an argument about it and I'm still kind of mad that I can't get my hair the way I want it.
My hair is boring. It's plain brown and there is nothing exciting about it. My hair also always sticks out a dumb way, or I get huge tangles in it and it's impossible to brush them out. No matter how much I wash it or brush it, it just doesn't stay tamed and it poofs out or the ends flip out. I hardly EVER have a day where it actually looks decent. I don't understand why I can't get it cut the way I want it. It's MY hair, and not my mom's, so why should she care? I want to get a cut that my sister tried once, and my sister fussed with it and complained about it, and my mom's afraid I'm going to do the same. I'm not my sister, and just because we're related doesn't mean we like the same things or complain about the same stuff. My mom's also saying "It'll be in your face all the time!" and "It'll make you break out!" and she's telling me I have to do all of these special things to take care of it, like curl it or put gel in it, or whatever. I was talking to a girl at school who has a style similar to the one I want, and she said she doesn't have to do anything special to it.
No matter how much I tell my mom that I can handle taking care of my hair, she says no and it's really beginning to get on my nerves. She keeps telling me "When you're 18 and want to hack off your hair, go ahead but you're not doing it now.", but I don't want to wait 5 YEARS to get a stupid haircut I want.
I have no clue how I'm going to convince her now.

Geesh, and I thought I was a bad mom when I wouldn't let my 13 year old daughter dye her hair black with red streaks. I told her to wait until she was 15.

But, a hair cut. I mean as long as you aren't getting a moehawk or shaving your head, what is the harm in it?

Is it possible to talk to the stylist about it? Maybe call them up without your mom knowing and ask them if that particular style is workable with your hair? Or, bring pictures with to show the stylist what you want. And, in front of your mom, ask if that sort of style would work with your hair type. Maybe the stylist could talk some sense into your mom.

Shoot, it's only hair. It will grow back.

My dad always said that i could do what i wanted with my hair as it would eventually grow back and i'd just have to live with my mistakes while it grew out if i didnt like it. (as opposed to tattoos which he doesnt/didnt want me to get)

Really, I'm actually not changing much of my hair. I want to get wings, which are like bangs only they're parted so they're put off to the side. I really like the way they look, and they'd cover these really ugly looking hairs I have underneath my hairline. They're little short curly hairs and they're SO annoying. I can't tie my hair back in a ponytail because otherwise they'd show, but I'm forced to in marching band and in basketball and I'm constantly playing with my hair to try and cover them. Right now, my bangs are grown out long enough so I can tuck them behind my ears, but I've had them that way for about 4 years and I'm getting tired of it.

I've honestly never heard of anyone getting acne from their hair touching their face. Sure, maybe if they don't clean their face properly, but otherwise it shouldn't be a problem.

I'm so sorry your mom is uptight. *hug* My parents have always been great. When I was nine, I asked for green hair. I got green, then rainbow, then pink, then half purple/half red, then green again. When I was twelve, I got a mohawk. I still have it.

The point is, hair is just hair. If your hair dresser talks to your mom, I'm sure that she'll let you do what you want.

I wish I could, but

1. My mom would definately not be happy with me.
2. I can't go to my hairdresser without my mom taking me, I'm not old enough to drive and it's way too far to walk.
3. If I cut my own hair, I guarantee you it would be a disaster and look horrible. XD

Yeah, I agree with twinkle completely here. It's not like you're running away with that devilishly handsome 25 year old from the bowling alley is it?

I'm debating whether or not I would swear at your mom or not, I think in this instance I would say no (I generally reserve that for people whining about their parents not letting them see a doctor) but I would advise you to point out to your mom she's being a domineering and overly controlling person, and her actions are only going to serve to drive you away from her, which is NOT what she wants.

My mom is stubborn like this with EVERYTHING. I finally got my ears pierced last November as a birthday present, and I'd like to get a second piercing (not the cartilage at the top, but right above the piercing I have now) but she says I have to wait until I'm old enough to get them pierced without needing a parent to sign a form because she won't sign it. D: I don't want a second piercing as much as I want this hairstyle, though.

Oh, and I take good care of my skin and hair. I use pore strips, acne cream, and I wash my hair with plenty of shampoo. Yes, I do get the occasional breakout but it's usually very small and it's not too noticeable. But it's hard with gym class and basketball, where I get really sweaty and my hair gets oily, but I try to wash my face with water after gym if I have time (we usually don't have more than about 4 minutes to change so sometimes I just have to go to my next class without wiping my face or I'd be late).



My mom isn't a bad person, it's not like I hate her or anything. She just overreacts about things and always seems to think something's going to go wrong. She can't trust me with a cell phone because she thinks I'm going to lose it, but SHE'S the one that is always misplacing her glasses or moving my things and doesn't remember where she put them.

Well you're going to have to have it out with her! Unless she can provide a valid reason for you not getting your hair cut like that, especially since it doesn't seem at all sleazy or gothic, She has no real argument!

If I can't get it cut the way I want, I'd at least like some highlights, but of course, I can't have highlights in my hair, either. She claims the highlights will turn red just because my hair is brown. Um, I've seen lots of girls with brown hair that have highlights and nothing happened to their hair.

Don't forget that she'd be paying for it, and the more extravagent the cut, the more expensive it is. And professional highlights and hair dyings are very expensive, not to mention you have to go back every four to six weeks and pay more to get them touched up.

I know, that's what she told me. I actually wouldn't mind paying for it, though. Highlights ARE expensive, that's why I thought I would go for a better cut instead. Well, really the only thing my hair stylist would have to do is take my bangs (they're long enough to go behind my ears) and cut them a little shorter so they go off to each side of my face. There's a girl in my science class who cut her own hair that way and it actually turned out good. There's no way I'm taking the chance of totally messing up my hair, though.
