Good grief. I am sick to death of pain. Yesterday morning I woke up and found out that I had hurt my neck really bad on one side. It felt like a twinge mixed with a burning sensation and as the day progressed, my arm went cold and numb with electric shock pains going into my hand and down to my fingers. Then, to make matters worse, my hand started to tingle and burn but it felt cold to the touch. When night came my arm was weak and my hand went stiff so I had to rest it. My neck was in agony still and no matter what position I was in the pain just wouldn't ease. My mom says this is normal neck pain from over-use. I hope she's right. I want her to be right.

Also, I didn't sleep very well last night. I got into a comfortable position in my bed and just lay. I drifted off but even in my horrible gragmented dreams I could feel my neck hurting. It's even spread into my shoulder. And it burns so much, like there's a raging fire in my muscles. I took an anti-inflamatory tablet and my mom put some cream on my skin but it didn't work. The cream absorbs into the skin but it didn't touch the pain. Anyway, I must have slept for about three hours and then I woke up again. And let me tell you, the pain I felt when I woke up was the worst pain I had felt in a long time. This time it felt like a twinge, a really bad immobolising twinge, while someone was giving me a snake burn or whatever you call them. It felt like someone had also punched my shoulder into smithereens. I just sat boltright in bed, clenched my teeth, and waited for it to pass.

I'm only 19. Why am I going through this? I went to the doctors countless times before, had blood tests and everything and apparently I'm fine. My lifestyle could have been improved back then and so I changed my lifestyle but it's still the same as before, the pain, the tiredness, the sniffles that wear me down time after time after time, the coughs that end up doing my back in (I take anti-inflamatories for my back, too).

I don't want to go to the doctor again. I actually WANT to be disgnosed with something. I don't want this to be 'life pain' because if it really is life pain then I've got it for the rest of my life. I'd rather die than have to put up with this...

Well lordy, how do you ever expect to get a diagnosis?

I know the NHS in England, my dear. I got a slipped disc (when a disc between vertebrae protrudes into your spinal cord) when I was 15 and it took me 14 months to get a diagnosis- I'm now undergoing intense physiotherapy because obviously carrying the injury for 14 months as 'random back pain' didn't do it any favours.

You've got to bug them and whine at them. You have to keep on and on saying 'look, i have a problem, it needs fixing.'. Although in more severe and elaborate terms. Honestly, you have to have so much of a go, and never hold back on your decriptions of the pain you're in. The neck thing, by the way, I think you're mum's right.

Apart from that...have you thought about some sort of alternative therapy? Acupuncture, osteopathy?

But they never diagnose anything because the blood tests come back negative. I like my doctor. He's great. Really friendly and everything so I guess I shouldn't really put off seeing him.

Ouch. I heard that's so painful. A neighbor had the same thing happen to her. Yes, I hope my mom's right. I do a lot of lifting at work, could it be that? I don't want to leave my job...

Nope. I'm silly, aren't I?

Sounds to me, in my completely untrained and inexperienced opinion that your immune system is attacking your body. My biology teacher has it.

Of course, I dont know because im not a doctor. Go back to the doctor. This 'oh i don't want to know if it's something bad' attitude isn't helping anyone. Does not knowing about cancer make it go away? Yes. I mean no. No it doesn't. So GO TO THE DOCTOR. It's what those lazy, scummy, scrounging students and thieving immigrant doctors are paid to do.

Yeah, hurts like hell. But there you go.

And my blood tests came back negative...because I had a slipped disc. The AMOUNT of WHINGING I had to do just to see a consultant. And then the sheer amount of whinging I had to do to get an MRI scan. Absolutely unbelieveable. I loathe the NHS for that, but they do do things...eventually.

Go back to the doctors. Again and again and again.

Eventually they may just palm you off to a specialist to see the back of you. I have a feeling that's what happened to me.

Sometimes if you sleep in a weird position, you can hurt a muscle. But if it's happening frequently...um, maybe you're missing some important vitamins/minerals?

See different doctors. It doesn't matter if a doctor is nice and friendly if another will spot a problem that he won't. I went round all 6 doctors in my practise who were all perfectly nice until I finally ended up with the newest doctor there who was shocked I hadn't been given physio for my neck. I'd been in agony for around 10 months asking for physio and being told it would do no good. My doctor sets me up with a physiotherapist and 6 weeks later I had 90% mobility back in my neck (compared to less than half before).

Some doctors just don't pick up on things that others do or make the right connections (or have common sense :/ ). Write down all your symptoms and every single way they effect you and take that list with you - one doctor will know what is going on. In the meantime if you have bad muscle pain then take nurofen plus, it does the job. And if your work is causing your neck to seize up then do neck exercises in the morning, or light weight lifting. Better yet, join a gym or go swimming.

Pain indicates that something is wrong with your body.

I'm not a doctor or anything, but doing a lot of lifting can result in DOMS (delayed onset muscle soreness). The best way to reduce this is to do some stretching after you finish your job. It helps to increase the range of motion in your muscles and joints, and helps you to become more limber.

When you finish off your lifting with some stretching, you reduce the severity of DOMS, which you will most likely greatly appreciate the next morning.

Well, blood tests don't show up everything. As Igg said, if you've slipped a disc or something like that it won't show up on a blood test because it doesn't really affect your blood.

Go to your doctor. Take your mum with you. Tell him in IMMENSE detail about the pain you're experiencing. Leave nothing out. If your eye feel sore when you crank your neck to a certain side, tell him so. If you grow pink antlers when you do a cartwheel, tell him so! If he does nothing and the pain's still there next week, go back and describe your pain AGAIN and tell him any new pains you have. If this doesn't work, then I would go to them every few days or so.

BTW, is it the UK you live in? If so, then this is no problem (apart frow the queues, but that's a whole different kettle of fish). If not, then this could be tricky if you don't have enough money.

I believe she is in the UK.

Otherwise I wouldn't tell her to keep on going to the doctors ;)

Oh, also, sometimes you can keep feeling pain after the injury is gone. It does NOT mean the pain isn't real, but it's not pain you should really be feeling...physio is meant to sort that out.

Ginger,

It almost sounds like a pinched nerve or a disc problem or a mis-alignment in your neck/spine. Those kinds of things will never show up in bloodwork, that needs an x-ray at least.

Yes, if you've done something to your neck it can go down your arm and make it feel like it's burning and tingling.

If an x-ray doesn't show anything, press for an MRI, it could be something muscular (pulled/strained).

True. That happened to my neck over the summer; it was so bad at times I couldn't turn my head all the way to the left. Since I changed my sleeping habits a bit, it's been completely normal. Sometimes a potentially serious thing just needs a simple solution like that. :)

MRI's also show up disc prolapse and the like, which you won't find on an x-ray.

Most likely it's somethng to do with my nerves, as I keep getting shooting pains in my legs and arms and hands, like when you hit your elbow and that pain runs right down your arm to your little finger.

I once slept with my neck leaning on the side... when i woke up the next day, I couldn't move my neck so my head was stuck on my right shoulder. Hurt like heck. Stayed like that for a day. The next day, back to normal.

Hold onto your seats people... the SL is back.
