Lost Wisconsin Cat Ends Up in France
Friday, October 28, 2005

APPLETON, Wis. — When Emily the cat went missing a month ago, her owners looked for their wandering pet where she had ended up before — the local animal shelter. This week they learned Emily sailed to France.

Lesley McElhiney now figures her cat went prowling around a paper warehouse near home and ended up in a cargo container (search) that went by ship across the Atlantic Ocean and was trucked to Nancy (search), a city in northeastern France near the border with Germany.

Employees at a French lamination company found her in the container, checked her tags and called Emily's veterinarian, John Palarski, in Kimberly, just east of Appleton.

Palarski called the McElhineys Monday to tell them their pet was safe, if a little hungry.

"It probably had access to food and water," Palarski said. "I doubt if it went three weeks without it. There must have been a lot of mice on the boat. Even if it was in the cargo department, you would assume there was water down there. She had to have something."

Palarski faxed French authorities with the cat's vaccination records to help remove her from quarantine (search), but the family is wondering how they will retrieve the pet.

Emily will need a health certificate from France to return home, and she will have to go through quarantine again on entering the United States, Palarski said.

The friend of a co-worker is going to Germany next week, but that's a country away.

"The only thing we can think right now is buying a plane ticket," McElhiney said. "She already cost us some the first time we got her from the humane society. She's getting to be an expensive little thing."

I know this thread's a bit old, but I wanted to post that the cat went home :)

PARIS, France (AP) -- Emily the cat is heading home, in style. The wayward tabby from Wisconsin that disappeared two months ago and wound up traveling across the Atlantic to France on a ship boarded a Continental Airlines flight Thursday -- in business class.
Travel conditions leaving Europe promised to be a bit more comfortable for Emily, who arrived as a stowaway in a cargo container after straying from home in Wisconsin.
"I don't think she'll drink champagne but I think she will be happy to rest," said Continental spokesman Philippe Fleury, at Charles de Gaulle airport to see Emily off. The airline offered to fly the cat home after her tale spread around the world and she cleared a one-month quarantine.
"This was such a marvelous story, that we wanted to add something to it," Fleury told AP Television News. A full-fare ticket for Emily's seat would normally cost about $6,000 and the airline provided a company escort for the cat.
Emily vanished from her home in Appleton, Wisconsin, late September. She apparently wandered into a paper company's distribution center near her home and crawled into a container of paper bales.
The container went by truck to Chicago and by ship to Belgium before the cat was found October 24 at Raflatac, a laminating company in Nancy, France.
Emily, who turned 1 year old that very day, was thin and thirsty but still alive.
Workers at Raflatac used her tags to phone her veterinarian in Wisconsin, and the vet called her owners.
Emily faced one last packed day of travel before her homecoming. She was due to arrive from Paris in Newark, New Jersey, midday Thursday and board a connecting flight to Chicago and then be driven home to Wisconsin, Fleury said.
Emily's escort, George Chiladze, a Continental employee based in Newark, said he was thrilled to be the one taking Emily back across the Atlantic.
"I will make somebody really happy to deliver this poor traveler back home," he said.

Awww...how cute.

(Look, look - someone mentioned Wisconsin! Hey - us Wisconsinites need to take pride in the few times we get mentioned in the news. :P)

Siggy under construction.

very adventurous cat :)

Sounds like had a seat to herself on the plane. My two cats aren't allowed to travel on plane seats - they travel with the luggage.
