Yet another Microsoft release. You've probally heard of it before, though due to its extreme publicity on Microsoft.com This time it's Windows Vista, this project orginally named Codename : LONGHORN was brought up in 2002, 4 years later we have the release. We live in a digital world that is filled with more information, more things to do, and more ways to communicate with others than ever before.

Every day, millions of people around the globe rely on their Windows-based PCs to manage the increasing amounts of digital information in their lives. While the tools we use for managing this information are powerful and familiar, today's world requires more. You want your PC to adapt to you, so you can cut through all the clutter and focus on what's important to you.

Windows Vista brings clarity to your world, so you can more safely and easily accomplish everyday tasks and instantly find what you want on your PC. Explore entertainment, such as TV and music, on your Windows Vista-based PC like never before. And with Windows Vista, you'll more conveniently stay connected to the people who are important to you, from home or while on the go.

Windows Vista puts you in control of what you want to do.

My business has the Microsoft Action pack - so they sent us a beta copy. I've gotta say that the layout's not too different, the games have been given a new glean, and internet explorer's a bit strange when you've been used to the standard layout on XP. MSN has a search box on there as standard.

Some programs didn't work on it either, so we just reverted to XP until they get it all working right.

We all have to watch out for vista, essentially it is a copyrights obsessed operating system that will screw you up and invalidate all your stuff.

And nothing else microsoft's released hasn't caused problems? Thinks about having to buy a new scanner and printer when I upgraded to XP - not even updated drivers would work for my old printer that I loved and used from 98SE through ME.

I just hope this thing isn't the next ME ... IMHO the absolute worst os ever.

I think it looks cool, although I've heard that in order to run Vista, you need something like a min. of 512 MB of RAM (preferred 1 GB) and some other crazy specs.

Don't think 512 MB RAM classifies as crazy nowadays. Heck, you can get that on one DDR400 stick for roughly 70$ here (if memory serves, that is).

I just found a page on Microsoft talking about the PC Hardware Guidelines.

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/window ... tarpc.mspx

According to what I've read so far and following some of the links (Intel, AMD, graphics cards), my computer is not ready for Vista.

It seems they're really gearing this toward 64 bit, though 32 bit can be used. I think many programs are still based on 32 bit, aren't they? I'm not all that computer savvy.

I can say there's no way I can afford to upgrade my processor, graphics card and probably power supply for those (considering I just replaced my PS) just for this new OS. I think there's going to be many people in the same position. Either won't or don't want to have to buy or upgrade for this. Microsoft may find some backlash from this new OS (is that anything new?).

Edit: March 21

Just read this:

"Microsoft Corp. will delay the release of its new windows operating system until January 2007 ...

The delay in windows Vista - caused by Microsoft needing more time to enhance security and other functions - will come as a blow to Microsoft partners who were looking forward to a new operating system to boost holiday sales.

The company will release some versions of the new operating system for big businesses by November as planned, but the consumer version will be postponed until January, said Jim Alchin, co-president of the Microsoft division that includes Windows.

He said the decision to delay the release came after Microsoft realized that Vista would be completed several weeks later than originally planned, largely because of efforts to improve security in the new system."

Bottom line? Microsoft continues to have huge security holes and issues.
