I know there's a recommendation thread further down, but that one is for someone else, and since it's not for laptops...

As some of you may know, I'm graduatiing this year and I'll be going to college in the fall. Recently, I've been searching around for laptops and have found some decent ones However, my mom told me that the laptop needs to be around the $1,000 price range (not including any additional software). I need to know if there are any specific laptops I should check out.

I'm open for anything except for HP, Compaq, and Gateway. My experiences with those computers have been kinda bad, so I'd like to stay away from those. (And yes, I'm open to Macs as well. :P)

As Paul said have a look on the Dell website where you can customize your laptop. If you do decide to go for a Dell have a look at http://www.notebookreview.com/deals/ where they have some discount coupons for various dell laptops for example with the XPS M140
you can get 10% off providing you get the laptops price above $899. Hope that helps.

The Macbook Pro isn't in Dragonfire's price range, or I would've recommended it.

Thanks for the info everyone, but I'm going with a Dell Inspiron E1505, partly because my mom has a discount on it (with all the customizations, it normally would cost about $2200, but now it costs about $1200, so I'm happy.)

That's a nice laptop man, I'm sure you'll be very happy. Don't forget to name it... and then tell us what you named it.
