When the storm came Anshu says: "Upon receiveing instructions from the captain we hurried to carry out our assignments". On a ship that small, with only 8 people/pets on board, everybody know what to do during a storm! It is also not mentioned in any other story that the captain gives out orders to the crewmembers. Also in the kaptains, kentaris and bonjus story, Anshu is on deck the first time of the storm.

Linae says at the end of the storm she helped Anshu with the leak. So Anshu has been working on that leak the entire storm! Not been seen by anyone! I think Linae is just backing up his story by saying she helped him. Giving him an alibi.

I agree with you about the Captain's story at least having the least amount of "lies" and it is odd that Anshu said the Captain ordered him below deck very first thing he claims, when he can clearly be seen above deck at other times. Also remember Anshu himself admitted to going back up on deck when he heard a yell, about an hour into fixing the leak.

It does make Anshu most suspicious for that alone, but I am still not so sure. Nobody really seems to be lying to me. It is only their limited ability to recall plus our investigator's shoddy skills that make it seem that way.

As for a motive on anyone's part, I really can't find one at all (except someone coveting Hoban's hat, as silly as it sounds). Even Linae appears fine working side by side with someone she claims to resent so much.

Anshu would not likely push Hoban over since he obviously respects him as a navigator even if Anshu doesn't agree with the navigation plan.

Kentari just seems completely harmless to me, a real team trooper.

Chef, in my opinion, is still the odd one of the bunch. What with his knife-stealing, and practically stalking Hoban every hour of the storm, etc.

I fixed on the fact that Anshu doesn't mention Linnae helping him fix the leak...I think that's because she was pushing Hoban overboard instead! --- If she's the culprit, we can believe Bonshu saying he talked to a calm Hoban at 5:00, meaning he got pushed overboard after 5...( 6:00) ----- I think the 6 X's on the charts refer to the hours...and the position of the 6th X appears to be I-22. The 6th X on the other map is on the starboard side of the ship.... So I have:
Linnae
6:00
Starboard railing
I-22
Love that ugly hat. :P

Ah, I have a question for all the people that know ship parts:

In the last scene of Kentari's story, where the ship is seen from far away, all blurry, the treasure map floating in the water, I would like to personally assume that is Hoban's view after the storm and wonder then what part of the boat he is then facing/looking back at?

That is the part I wish to use as my answer for the location of the fall.

Can anyone help me there? Would that be the starboard or the portside?

I went back to Cerise's comment but I don't even know what part of a ship is the "front" (bow) as I always seem to get that backwards.

EDIT: In fact, in that scene, the ship appears to be going the other way (as in instead of "reading" the ship moving left to right, it appears to be heading to the "left" side of the page, so I can only assume Hoban fell off on the "left side" of the ship (if one were standing facing the direction the boat is going, also judging by the sails, and if the smaller part is the front.)

I'm wondering how people are getting numbers for the map. From Bonju's account, it would seem the storm started at 3. If it started at 3 and at the latest Hoban disappeared at 6, that's three hour values for the six Xs. Does anyone disagree that the storm did not start at three? If so, what evidence do you have that it doesn't?

The starboard side is the right side of the ship as you face foreward. The port side is the left side.

When this "activity" first came out, the news said there were new "plot poems" out, remember? And they were about the Cydrake's Gaze. So it seems like TNT was just goshing with us, or that this exercise is just part of the plot.

I guess I should just embarrasingly admit, I don't know which side is the "front" of the ship? I somehow remember it is sort of backwards? The wheel is at the back of the ship? But they still face forward as in the direction the boat is sailing, I assume? So from that view, if one assumes as I do, Hoban might have fallen off the portside? Correct? If the boat in that image is "sailing from right to left" from that last point of view?

Ugh, I am very disappointed in this plot or whatever it is. This looks like plain old guessing, and I hate guessing (and we just did guessing in the Staff Tournament!). *grouse, whine, moan, etc.*

Anyway, here are my picks:
Who pushed Hoban? Kentari
When did he fall? 6:00
Where on the ship did he fall? foremast
Where is Hoban now? I22
Do you like Hoban's hat? yes, it's very stylish

I don't really know why I picked any of them. :P

For all those assuming the Xs on the grid represent times, I think that would be too easy. To relate one answer to another would be pointless. Someone could say well I think Hoban fell at 6 and there are 6 Xs so that answer must go with that. I do not think TNT would make it that obvious, but I could be wrong.

Watch, in a few days, they'll post the and it will be:

No one pushed Hoban. He didn't fall off of any part of the ship at anytime, therefore he didn't go into the Neopian Ocean, and of course the hat is ugly!

Call me a pessimest, but this is TNT we're talking about here...

In this ship, the helm/wheel is in the back. I just looked at the picture I think you're referring to - on third page of first comic? If so, it looks like the ship's front is pointing to the left. If so, the side you see is the starboard. I simply took a guess as to where he fell off; it seemed so useless (or time consuming!) to try to figure any more out by the pictures given (since no one said anything about where Hoban was last, and he seemed to be walking all over). However, I just thought of something. If it was Bonju, and you look at his picture on the very last comic plate, you might be able to figure out where that is on the ship.

EDIT: It looks like the starboard side, but TNT might be refering to this as the aft. Darn, I put port side.

No I meant the last frame of Kentari's story. Chapter 2. We see the ship from someone else's perspective other than Kentari's. I think it is Hoban's.

In that picture, I think, the ship is sailing from "right to left" on the page? Indicating, to me, that Hoban is last seeing the ship from where he fell off. If the ship was sailing "right to left" and one is on the ship facing the direction it is going, Hoban fell off the "left" or port side?

I noticed something that I missed earlier. When the Captain tells the story, we see the Captain at the helm steering the ship. However, when Anshu and Linae told their stories, it was Hoban steering the ship.

OK. The ship is pointing in the same direction as the picture I was looking at, but I made a mistake with the terms :D Yea, he would've fallen off the left side, which is port. Just out of interest, there's a clear picture of the ship sailing the opposite way, at the bottom of the first page of the comic (ch. 1). The front has blue things sticking out over the water. What technical nautical terms I use

As far as Hoban in the captain's story. I did mention it before, but no one that posted seemed interested. I find it strange.

Yes, no worries, it took me too long to figure all this left/right stuff too.

I think we just don't know what to make of that inconsistency, and since the Captain is not a suspect and all others are, it makes it more weird.

Hoban is seen sulking all over the ship and appears to be doing little navigating or helping out much at all. That alone is suspicious to me.

I am reconsidering this grid thing, and might go with the choice of G19 now, only due to the general direction of the ship and considering if Hoban fell off port side he would be on the other side of the line? (Drifting?) :P

This is getting way too far out for me now. I need to rest my brain soon.

EDIT: DUR, I just realize that Orrin himself, the witness to the "crime" says he heard AND saw someone fall off the port side! Last page Chap 1. Well, that is if the port hole is on the port side? Or are they all around?

Here's what I have so far; hopefully, others can add to it.

There are two (and a half) problems with Anshu's story that I can tell so far:

  • Anshu is supposed to fix a leak right as the storm begins, but Linae says she helped Anshu fix the leak "near the end of the storm". This pretty much narrows the liars down to Anshu and Linae.
  • Near 5:00, Bonju notices that Hoban had "calmed down a little" and asks Hoban what the problem is, and he finds out - Linae was calling him bad luck. However, Anshu says Bonju has "no idea" (which is possible if Bonju approached Hoban after Anshu asked Bonju) but then Hoban was "having yet another argument", which doesn't fit at all with seeming calmer.

Assuming we can trust at least one of Bonju or Anshu, he wasn't pushed exactly at 5:00 because two both people say they saw Hoban perfectly well at that time. The only time remaining is 6:00. Another hint that Hoban (probably) was fine until around 6:00: who would have plotted the points on the map to try to navigate out of the storm?

The following was scraped from various Internet sources and Wikipedia, so I'm not sure of some of this:

A close look at the ship shows you that the portholes are in the front and back, near the helm, foremast, and aftdeck, and that there are no portholes below the port or starboard railings.

It doesn't even look like the cargo crates are above deck from the pictures. If they mean the scattered boxes around the deck, that's way too vague, and I doubt there even *were* cargo crates left on deck after all that tossing around in the storm.

There isn't really much of a foremast from the pictures - it doesn't really extend past the boundaries of the ship, so it's impossible to be pushed from the foremast overboard.

The same problem occurs with the helm - that's the wheel, and it's kinda far from the sides of the ship (see chapter 1, page 2), so it's also rather hard to be pushed from there into the water.

I think I'm going with "aftdeck", probably the real-world "poop deck", the platform on which the wheel is situated (as far as I can tell).

6:00, hopefully, corresponds to the I22 X on the grid. *fingers crossed*

There are a few questions that I haven't answered, though:

  • What happened to Bonju's original knife?
  • Why did Linae's tile disappear?
  • What set Honan off anyway, before dinner? Linae?

If there's any problems in my logic, or improvements, feel free to correct me. :)

[edit] clarify "who would have plotted the points...?"
